BOOK REVIEW By Sarah Beauregard Grab the tissues! The Tale of Three Trees: A Traditional Folktale retold by Angela Elwell Hunt is a tear jerker! This is the story of three little trees growing on a mountaintop, each with a dream for the future. One wants to be a trea-sure chest, the second wants to be a sailing ship for kings. The third tree dreams of becoming the tallest tree in the world, causing people to think of God as they gaze toward heaven at the highest branches.

The trees are harvested by woodcutters and it seems their dreams won't come true. The book has a surprising turn and each tree is able to see their dreams of beauty, strength, and a desire to lift the people's eyes to heaven become reality.

The story is a great reminder to the reader that God wants to give his children their heart's desires. Tissue, please!

Every year on Christ-mas Eve, the children are allowed to open one gift: Christmas Pajamas.8Buy one new ornament each year as a family, or one for each of your children. When those little ones grow up and leave the nest (sniff!) they’ll leave with a box of decorations for their own tree!9Visit the annual Smyrna Christmas Parade, sure to be a treat. 10Draw names for a make-or-bake holiday. Dad can sing a song as a gift to a little one, or children can create special art for an older sibling or parent. Get creative!

Directions:1) Cut a slit about halfway down each corner of the box. Fold a crease on two opposite sides where the slit stops, and pull the sides up until they meet in the center. Glue them together with hot glue.

2) Trace and cut the sides of the box to match the roof line. Hot glue the sides to the roof. It’s a basic house shape now!

3) Trace the gingerbread house onto the brown felt with chalk, and cut the pieces out. Use craft glue to attach the felt if the box is un-coated. If the box has a shiny or slick coating use hot glue instead.

4) Cut out lots and lots of candy-like shapes from the various colors of felt. Little ones just

You’ll need:-a cardboard box (any size will do)-enough brown felt to cover the sides of your box-additional felt in various colors-a stick of chalk-scissors-craft glue-hot glue gun/hot glue sticks-ric-rac and pompoms -paint (optional)

getting the hang of scissors can cut basic shapes, and will love contributing. I have white circles painted with red swirls to look like peppermints, lollipops, gum-drops from sparkly pink felt, and more.

5) With the hot glue, add ric-rac, pom-poms, or any other permanent decora-tions to the gingerbread house.

The small felt pieces will stick to the brown felt on your gingerbread house, but they're removable so you can redeco-rate as many times as you'd like! Happy decorating!

SEASONAL SNACKS

Pom seeds, also known as arils, are a juicy and delicious snack. The simplest way to consume this fruit is to cut into quarters with a large knife. Submerge the sections in a bowl of water and quickly work the seeds out with your fingers. The pith will float to the top so you can easily scoop it out, then drain in a colander.

family tableFIRST FOOTING. Bring good fortune to friends and neighbors in the coming year by borrowing this Scottish New Year’s tradition. After the clock strikes midnight, visit the homes of family and friends and bring a few little gifts for the New Year, like a coin for prosperity, delicious homemade bread for food, and some sparkling cider for good cheer.

Kale Chips. Seriously so yummy! Remove the stem from a large bunch of kale and chop into smaller, chip-sized pieces. Toss in a bit of olive oil and spread out in a single layer on a large baking sheet. Salt and sprinkle with some fresh lemon juice (optional). Bake at 3000 for 15-20 minutes, turning after the first ten minutes.

Sweet Potato Fries. Who doesn’t love French fries? Make 'em with sweet potatoes to increase intake of vitamins A and C. Slice one into ¼” fries, toss in olive oil and spread out in a single layer on baking sheet. Add salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika (add cumin or chili powder for a spicier twist). Bake at 4000 for 20 minutes, turning as needed.

1. Do as much as you can as early as you can. Choose finger foods, desserts, and vegetables that can mostly be made the day before. If you get the prep out of the way, you’ll have more time to enjoy time with family.

2. Let the turkey rest almost as long as you cooked it. To yank the bird out of the oven and start hacking away at it means all those delicious juices end up on the board below. Give it time to relax and retain all that moisture. Pull it out of the oven, wrap with aluminum foil and let it hang out for two hours or so.

3. Delegate! If everyone gets involved, then everyone will feel like they contributed. Working together in the kitchen makes memories.

4. Don’t be afraid to go disposable. At my house, we’ve started using paper plates during the holi-days. I know it’s not as fancy, but with 15 people that’s much less cleanup and much more family time.

ALEX'S SWEET POTATO GRATINServes 8

4-5 large sweet potatoes1 ¼ cup freshly grated parme-san cheese1 T cinnamon4 T butter, diced1 ½ cups heavy creamKosher salt (I use Diamond Crystal)Freshly ground black pepper

Preheat oven to 375 deg. Peel sweet potatoes and slice into small rounds 1/8 inch thick (using a mandoline or food processor attachment makes this faster). Shingle the bottom of a buttered 9x13 dish with one layer of potatoes. Sprinkle with salt and a pinch of cin-namon and dust with some of the cheese. Repeat until you run out of potatoes. When the dish is filled, press down to compress the potato gratin. Pour heavy cream evenly across the top and season with salt, pepper, remaining cinnamon, cheese, and diced butter. Bake until golden brown and tender, 55-65 minutes. Let rest 20 minutes. Slice into squares, serve, and feast.

COPS AND KIDS FOR CHRISTMAS

Nearly 100 children gather at the local Walmart, eagerly awaiting their chance to shop for family Christmas gifts with a Smyrna police officer. They select a new pair of shoes and a warm coat, and then the officers watch the children’s eyes light up as they spend the remain-der of their budget on extra gifts. Some children will buy more clothing, while others indulge themselves in the latest toy craze. Some choose to spend the entire budget on toiletries for their family. Every year, there are children who want to shop for their siblings and family before purchasing personal items.

For some families in need, these will be the only gifts received this year. Many of these children have had contact with police officers during situations that are not always pleasant for the child-- horrible tragedies where children have been displaced after a parent has been murdered, or children affected by a parent being sent to prison follow-ing child abuse charges. The program has assisted families that have been affected by lay-offs, house fires, and terminal illnesses like cancer. Cops and Kids for Christmas is an opportunity for children to interact with police officers in a positive environment.
