New Balance designed both sneakers with “varsity-inspired” colors to give hat tilts to

the Hub’s many colleges. Boston features prominently on the outside of the sneakers

and insoles, which have an outline of Massachusetts with a heart marking the city.

The shoelace aglets are imprinted with the words “Run” and “Boston.”

Seattle’s Brooks Running Co. started sales Friday of limited-edition Nantucket-themed

versions of its Adrenaline GTS 16 shoe. The sneakers are designed to pay tribute to

Boston and the popular island destination’s coastal culture and seafaring roots. They

come in two plaids of Nantucket red, white and blue, with a lobster on the shoelace

locks, a sailboat and whale on the heels, and an anchor on the sockliners.

Two local running apparel companies also are taking advantage of Boston’s biggest

running event of the year with popup stores in the Back Bay, under landlord

Jamestown Properties’ “Run Boston Shop Boston” initiative.

Wellesley-based Tracksmith’s temporary showroom and runners’ lounge at 899

Boylston St. is inspired by this year’s marathon grand marshal, Roberta “Bobbi” Gibb.

In 1966, Gibb became the first woman to run and finish the Boston Marathon — as an

unregistered participant because a women’s division was not sanctioned until 1972.

Gibb also finished first among women in 1967 and 1968.

Tracksmith’s store will showcase its spring performance clothing and the limited-

edition Bobbi, women’s training shorts inspired by the pair Gibb wore for her 1966

race. The store also will include an art gallery with the first public exhibition of Gibb’s
