The Sneetches and Other Stories by Dr. Seuss
Retell a Story
4-5 year olds should be able to tell a story that sticks to the topic
5-6 year olds should be able to retell a story or talk about an event
6-7 year olds should be able to tell and retell stories and events in a logical order
7-8 year olds should be able to explain the key elements of a story (main idea,
main characters, plot) and read, then paraphrase/retell a story in sequence
First, give your child an overview of the story so they hear the main idea. Then,
read the story. Finally, ask a few of these questions to get your child going in
the right direction:
Main Idea Questions
1. What was the story about?
2. What did we learn about in this story?
Main Character Questions
1. Who had stars on their bellies?
2. Who felt bad because they did not have stars on their bellies?
3. Who helped them get/remove stars?
Plot Questions
1. What happened in the story?
2. What happened next? (ask this multiple times to get through all of the events)
