A team of dedicated disciples and contemporaries of Mahatma Gandhi,

Dr.T.S.Soundaram and Dr.G.Ramachandran, established Gandhigram Rural Institutions in

1947. The Gandhigram Rural Institute was created to promote rural development. Today, it

has become a nationally and internationally recognized university for its contribution to rural

higher education.

The NSS (National Service Scheme) Cell in Gandhigram Rural Institute – Deemed

University (GRI) has organized several programmes to tune the personality of the student

volunteers and make them responsible for rural development since 1979-80. The unique

feature of NSS in GRI is that all the students studying Diploma, Under Graduate, and Post

Graduate (except one year programmes) are NSS volunteers. There are 19 NSS units in the

GRI NSS Cell. Shramadhan, tree plantation in campus and in the adopted villages, and blood

donation to the people admitted in the Kasturba Hospital, Gandhigram, and Government

Hospital, Dindigul, are regular features. Other important Regular Programmes organized

during 2015-2016 were the celebration and observation of National important days (NSS

day, International yoga day, Voters’ day, Youth awakening day, Water day, World

environmental day etc.,), personality development programmes for volunteers, rally on social

issues, training programmes on disaster management, skill development programmes,

implementation of Swatch Bharat Mission in GRI, youth employment skills for SC/ST

students sponsored by Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Youth Development and awareness

programmes on dengue prevention, plastic eradication, health and hygiene etc.

The NSS Cell of GRI has also conducted 17 Special Camps focusing on the special

camp theme “Personal Hygiene and Nutrition” during the year 2015-2016. These camps

were conducted in the service villages of GRI and other nearby villages in Dindigul District.

The detailed list of activities carried out under Regular Programme and Special Camps

during the academic year 2015-2016 are presented in the consolidated report.
