Snowman Shelf/computer doll - for experienced knitters only

Materials:In 8ply/DK/(USA-WW(4ply)); 25grms (1oz) White; small amount of black for hat, shoes andbuttons, red for scarf and hands, green for laces and orange for nose. No.11 (3mm)(USA2)knitting needles; suitable childsafe toy stuffing; tweezers for stuffing arms and legs;tapestry needle for sewing up; small crochet hook for tassles on scarf

Tension & Size:Worked at a tension of 26 stitches and 36 rows to 10 x 10cm over stocking stitch, usingNo.11(3mm) needles throughout. Height: From base to top of hat 15cms (6") not includinglegs.

Abbreviations:K, knit; p, purl; st(sts), stitch, stitches; sl, slip; tog, together; inc, increase (by working

twice into same st); dec, decrease (by taking 2 sts tog); NR: next row; ss, stocking stitch(k on right side and p on wrong side); Skpo; slip1, knit1, pass slipped stitch over;Coloured marker: Short length of a different coloured yarn to the yarn that you are usingat present; Cast off: bind off.

BODY: (make 1 piece)Starting at base edge and using white yarn, cast on 40sts. Placing a coloured marker in19th and 23nd sts in the first row, ss24 rows.Shape for shoulders: K4, (k2tog) six times, k8, (k2tog) six times, k4 (28sts).

Leaving a long end, break off yarn and threadthrough sts and put aside.

BASE: (make 1 piece)Using white yarn, cast on 18sts and ss12 rows. Cast off all sts.

ARMS: (make 2 pieces)Using white yarn and starting at top of sleeve cast on 12sts and ss7 rows.NR: Inc, one st each end of row (14sts). Ss8 rows.NR: Knit four rows.NR: K1, (k1, k2tog) to last st, k1 (10sts).Break off white and join in red yarn and starting with a purl row, ss6 rows.

NR: P2tog, to end of row (5sts). Break off yarn and thread through sts and put aside.

LEGS: (make 2 pieces)Using black yarn and starting at the foot, cast on 12sts and purl one row.NR: K1, (inc) in next 10sts, k1 (22sts).Starting with a purl row, ss7 rows.NR: K5, (k2tog) six times, K5 (16sts). NR: P.NR: K5, (k2tog) three times, K5 (13sts).Break off black and join in white yarn and starting with a purl row, ss28 rows. Cast off allsts.

HAT: (make 1 piece)Brim: Using black yarn, cast on 42sts and k1, (k1,inc) to last st, k1, (62sts). Starting with a

purl row, ss3 rows. NR: Purl (Brim edge). Starting with a purl row ss3 rows. Dec row: k1,(k1,k2tog) to last st, k1, (42sts). Starting with a purl row, ss10 rows.Top of hat: NR: Knit (edge of top of hat).Starting with a knit row, ss2 rows.1st dec, row: K1, (k2, k2tog) to last st, k1, (32sts). NR: Purl.2nd dec, row: K1, (k1, k2tog) to last st, k1, (22sts). NR: Purl.3rd dec, row: (k2tog) to end of row (11sts). Leaving a long end, break off yarn and threadthrough stitches, pull up tightly and sew row ends together to cast on edge. Fold brimedge over. Sew cast on edge of brim to the wrong side of work.

SCARF: (make 1 piece)Using red yarn, cast on 6sts and knit 90 rows (Note: no slipping the first st, when knittingup or you will need to cast on 7sts). Cast off all sts.

NOSE: (make 1 piece)Using orange yarn, cast on 4sts and ss3 rows. Cast off all sts.

MAKING UP:Legs: Sew row ends together. Fold foot seam in half (side seam at heel of foot) and sewseam. Turn leg to right side. Stuff shoe firmly, stuff leg lightly and leave last 12 rows of legempty.Body: Pull up sts tightly at top of head and sew row ends together to second colouredmarker. Leaving an opening of 4cms (1.1/2") Sew to cast on edge. Pin the top of legs to

base each side of the coloured markers in cast on edge of body, leaving a 2st gap in themiddle (See photo 2). Pin cast on edge of base to legs with one st overhanging each sideof legs. Sew base to body. Turn body right side out through opening and stuff body andhead firmly. Sew opening up.

Arms: Pull stitches up tightly and sew row ends together. Turn piece to right side and stuffhands and 2cms(1") of arm, leaving the rest of arm empty. Fold arm so that side seam is inthe centre back and facing body. Sew arms to body at neck through the first two rows atcast on edge.Facial features: (See photo 1 for placement). Eyes: Leaving a gap of 3sts between eyes

and using black yarn work a chain stitch in one st and work a second chain stitch aroundthe first st. Nose: Sew cast on edge to cast off edge, shaping like a carrot as you go. Sewnose to head in the centre of eyes and top of nose in the second row down from the loweredge of eyes. Mouth: Using red yarn embroider 5 small chain sts, 2 rows in depth.Hat: Stuff the top of hat lightly to shape. Place hat on head and sew to head through therow above the brim.Buttons: Working buttons down the centre front of body and using black yarn work achain stitch in one st and work a second chain stitch around the first st. every five rows.Scarf: Cut 12 lengths of red yarn 7cms (2.3/4") in length. Using the crochet hook work 6tassles on the cast on edge and cast off edge. Tie scarf to neck (see photo 1 or placement)and attach(sew) scarf to body at the centre front of body and the lower edge of scarf thatis over the top of the arms.Laces: Using green yarn, thread tapestry needle and work laces and bows on the front ofshoes.
