IN WISCONSINWith more than 25,000 milesof pristine snowmobile trails,it’s no surprise the snow-mobile is an important partof Wisconsin’s history. Infact, the first sled wasinvented in 1924 by CarlEliason in Sayner, and it nowresides at the Vilas CountyHistorical Museum. There’seven a Snowmobile Hall ofFame located in St. Germain.

In other parts of the world afoot of snow dumpedovernight, ice-coveredhighways and 40 below windchill are sound reasons topull down the shades, crankup the heat, and turn on thetelevision. But to folks inWisconsin, snow is aprecious natural resourcebecause it means one thing:snowmobiling.

Snowmobiling

NORTHERNWISCONSINEagle River & MinocquaEagle River, officially registered as“The Snowmobile Capital of theWorld” in 1964, has five snowmobileclubs that groom 600 miles of trailsdaily. These trails weave throughVilas and Oneida counties, the Nico-let National Forest and around2,400 lakes. Visit the city’s annualIce Castle creation, an icy architec-tural wonder that has changed indesign every year since it was firstbuilt in 1927. It’s built by a team ofvolunteers headed by area firefight-ers who put in more than 700 manhours to cut nearly 3,000 ice blocksfrom a local lake and haul them intoplace. Trail #13 passes right by it.

One of the favorite trails in theMinocqua area is the Bearskin StateTrail that stretches 18 miles throughthe forests of Oneida County. Trafficis two-way with several rest spotsalong the way. This area also hasmore than 1,600 miles of trails thattraverse 1,300 glacial lakes and233,000 acres of public forestland.

More to Explore:Every year in January, Women onSnow brings over a hundredwomen of all ages and riding abil-ities to the Northwoods. Duringthis three day event, the womenlog roughly 200 miles while enjoy-ing time together, good food, andlots of fun. This year’s event takesplace January 27-29, 2012.(www.womenonsnow.org)

Hurley & MercerWho can argue this is the state’ssnow capital with snowfall totalsknown to top 300 inches. Peopleoften snowmobile here rightthrough the last week ofMarch. Off-trail snowmobile ridingis also available on 175,000 acresof public land. This is for the ad-venturous rider and a certain typeof sled is necessary navigate thedeep snow.

Known for its mining heritage, youcan snowmobile to the site of theworld’s deepest iron mine and ex-plore the interpretive park there

SOUTHERN WISCONSINJuneau County Rolling hills, deep valleys, and vil-lages dot southern Juneau County.To the north explore forests andexpanses of prairies and wetlandsincluding the Necedah NationalWildlife Refuge. Some weekendscheck out sanctioned time trialson Castle Rock Lake. The Elroy-Sparta Trail travels through thecounty and connects with over 500miles of state funded trails. Wisconsin’s Self-Funded Trail SystemBy legislative action, the State of Wisconsin has adopted a self-fundedsnowmobile trail system in which snowmobilers themselves pay for thevast network of trails that criss-cross the state. Funds are generated bysnowmobile registration and state gas taxes on that portion of the fuelused by snowmobilers. The fund is administered by the Department ofNatural Resources and by cooperating counties that have adopted theprogram. Counties contract with individuals or organizations, usuallylocal snowmobile clubs, to develop and maintain trails.
