SEASON 2014 / 15

Page 2: Sns brochure 2014 15 full3

I’m delighted to be returning “home” again this year as Associate Conductor, and can’t wait to be part of such an exciting season lineup. I hope to see you at a concert soon!

Martin MacDonald, Former Resident (2008-2011) and

Associate Conductor (2013-2015)

This season is so

fantastic that I am

hard pressed to

pick out anything

to whet your

appetite… so I will

be quite selfish and

tell you my special

favourites. First of

all is our Festival,

with Italian pianist

Antonio Pompa-Baldi performing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concertos no. 2

and 3. Then there is pianist Sara Davis Buechner – I have performed with

her before, and can promise you a wonderful Beethoven. I also know the

cellist Santiago Cañón Valencia, and what he is capable of doing! More

people I know and admire: Dominic Desautels, who will give you the

Mozart Clarinet Concerto; our Concertmaster Renaud Lapierre, who will

play in the Mozart Sinfonia Concertante; and then... Terry Tam and Lorraine

Min, who will come back to Halifax to play the Mendelssohn Concerto for

Violin and Piano. Enough? Let’s go to the Bach Magnificat in the Baroque

series, and Howard Cable, Natalie MacMaster, Jill Barber, and the music of

Michael Jackson in the Pops. Not to mention our annual Nova Scotia Youth

Orchestra collaboration, also featuring Rachmaninoff; an exciting concert

of contemporary music; and Ballet Jörgen’s Cinderella. Please sign on

and come join us!

Bernhard Gueller, Music Director

FESTIVAL: RACHMANINOFF’S THIRD & SCHEHERAZADE Three of Russia’s finest compos-ers. Three huge blockbusters. And a pianist that Maestro Gueller calls “mind-blowing” and “absolutely sensational,” who recently performed Rachmaninoff’s most famous and technically challenging masterpiece “with such clar-ity and musical ability as I’d never heard.” Don’t miss your rare opportunity to hear this one-of-a-kind celebration, featuring three knockouts that haven’t been performed by our orchestra in almost a decade.
