The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) 2007 Graduating Student Survey shows that students who use their college career center and its resources got jobs more than those who went directly to the employer.

Really?

I talked

to a recruiter last night.

“My firm actively recruits from every major university in Texas, and I have had first-hand experience in dealing with the various placement centers. It is clear to me that Baylor’s Career Services area is the most professionally run program in the state. The professionals working there are extremely helpful and work very hard on behalf of the students. Additionally, the students are well prepared for interviews and conduct themselves very well.”

Approximately 10,000 jobs and internships are posted and 9,000 resumés referred to employers each year.

Campus InterviewsImagine never having to leave campus to interview for a job. Career Services helps students have as many opportunities as possible to interview with top-tier companies on campus. Whether you are looking for a job in engineering, human services, business, health care, government or education, you will get a head start by utilizing Career Services.

Many companies who want to hire May graduates do so in the fall.

Begin the job search process early. A select list of employers is available at the back of this brochure. For a more complete list of companies, please visit our website.

Company Information SessionsIn addition to numerous on-campus

interviews, approximately 145 company-hosted information sessions take place annually. Companies frequently hold information sessions in advance of their on-campus interviews so students can learn more about them. Company representatives attend and meet students interested in finding out more about the company following a brief company presentation. Students can hand deliver their resumés and provide additional information to recruiters to take into consideration. Often, these are the same recruiters and managers students will be interviewing with later. It is helpful to meet them first in a casual setting, which can create a more comfortable experience in the actual interview.

Online Job PostingsMany companies are aware of Baylor’s

outstanding reputation but don’t have the resources to manage a full-time recruiting effort or may be too far from Waco to recruit on campus. Career Services has made it easy for these companies to have an opportunity to recruit at Baylor. These companies post their jobs online, where Baylor students can then access them through Hire A Bear. With the Job Search Agent, you will automatically receive new listings that match your search criteria. This translates into thousands of jobs nationwide that Baylor students can view. The best thing about this option is that it can be accessed from the comfort of your home.

Campus ProgramsWorkshopsEmployer representatives conduct the following job search workshops during the fall and spring semesters. We think the best way to find out what employers want is to ask them. You get the inside information directly from the people doing the hiring.

Mock InterviewsHow do you get better at something? Practice, practice,

practice. Interviewing is no different. With mock interviews, professional recruiters come to campus each semester to conduct practice interviews. This is an excellent opportunity for you to improve your interviewing skills and receive feedback from those making the hiring decisions. You can schedule an interview through Hire A Bear.

The average starting salary is $41,089. (Based on a random survey at graduation.) More than

350 non-profit, government, education and for-profit companies recruit and visit with students at Baylor’s job fairs.

Job FairsFall and Spring Hire A Bear Fairs

These fairs bring more than 350 companies from non-profit, government, education and for-profit industries to campus to respond to career questions from students at each level of study. Freshmen should visit with recruiters to explore career options. Sophomores and juniors should attend the job fairs with resumé in hand to explore internship opportunities prior to graduation. Seniors should approach the job fairs as a key opportunity to begin the interview process with diverse employers, indicating their objectives and seeking formal interviews.

non-profit Job FairThe Non-profit Job Fair is held during

the spring semester. This is an excellent opportunity for students to visit with numerous non-profit organizations about full-time, part-time, internship and volunteer opportunities. Some of the organizations attending recent fairs were the Family Abuse Center, Habitat for Humanity, the International Mission Board, Teach for America, the Texas Baptist Children’s Home and the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.

Teacher Job FairThe Teacher Job Fair is held during

the spring semester. It gives students an opportunity to visit with more than 100 school district representatives from across Texas to explore teaching opportunities. Students also are able to schedule interviews with school districts.

STeM Job Fair (Science/ Technology /engineering/Math)

The fair takes place in the spring and is targeted at students who are seeking jobs in technical areas. Employers such as Hewlett-Packard, Continental Airlines and the FBI are looking for engineers, software programmers and database administrators.

“I was excited to hear about the job fairs, workshops and mock interviews that Career Services facilitates. Thank you also for researching employment for me through alumni in my hometown! I’m thrilled to begin using Career Services as another tool to succeed during my college years to benefit my lifelong career.”

because they don’t know where to start. You can start with Career Services. Walk-in hours and appointments with a career advisor are available. Get advice on an upcoming interview, talk about your aspirations, learn how to start your job search or get your resumé critiqued.

Mentor networkWouldn’t it be great to have someone in the

Why now?

I’ve got 5, maybe 6 years until I’m a senior.

So, you ready to check out Career Services?

“Baylor’s Career Services works hard to bring companies to Baylor from high-tech industries. Also, the career fairs and mock interviews are excellent opportunities for students to practice meeting people, presenting resumés and having conversations that might eventually lead to employment opportunities.”

Don’t Wait until you’re a SeniorA typical industry guideline is that employers extend offers to 75 percent of their interns and fill more than 50 percent of their openings with interns.

InternshipsI’m just a freshman or sophomore, how can Career Services help me?

That is a question we hear frequently. It’s never too early to begin your career search, and what better way than to “try on” a few jobs. You can determine if the job you thought you wanted is right for you through an internship, which is most often completed during the summer for eight to 10 weeks. Some are paid and others are not. The important thing to take away from an internship is insight into a specific profession and whether or not you want to continue pursuing that path. Imagine learning that the summer following your freshman year rather than after your first month on the job following graduation! Visit us online now to explore opportunities.

Alumni ServicesAfter graduation, you have complete access

to the same resources you did as a Baylor student. We’ll critique resumés, refer your resumé to employers seeking alumni or give you access to assessments. Since alumni often do not live in Waco, these services are available on our website.

Alumni also may request that a letter of reciprocity be sent to a university in their hometown. If the local university accepts the letter, the agreement is that the school will allow Baylor graduates use of their resources in exchange for Baylor doing the same.

Finally, alumni can give back by joining our Mentor Network, where current job-seeking students can contact individuals for advice and assistance. The Mentor Network is comprised of alumni, employers, parents, students and friends who represent diverse career fields nationwide and have offered to share their career experiences.
