A very warm welcome to

SO Festival 2012!East Lindsey District Council, with support and funding from Arts Council England, and in partnership with Magnetic Events, has worked incredibly hard since last year’s festival to develop an extended, nine-day programme inspired by this amazing Olympic year.As well as our coastal resorts, this year’s SO Festival now encompasses East Lindsey’s market towns of Louth, Woodhall Spa, Spilsby, Alford, Tattershall, Horncastle and Wragby. Theatre, art and music will be performed in all of these unique locations, giving people numerous opportunities to experience free entertainment and culture.

2012 is a very special year and East Lindsey District Council has been a long-term supporter of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Council has also worked hard to strengthen cultural links with partners in Helsingborg (Sweden) and Helsingør (Denmark), and we are delighted to welcome young people and dignitaries from these two towns to Skegness as the Olympic Torch passes through 13 communities in our district.

SO Festival 2012 is set to stage a number of UK firsts, not just the visit of the Olympic Torch and Follow The Light, but also the UK’s first ever live screening of a full opera on a beach. With dance, street theatre, music and art in the most unexpected places, we’ve worked hard to develop a festival programme that offers something for everyone.

We are also acutely aware that businesses need support in these tough times. We have always believed that by staging SO Festival, we are giving people a reason to come to East Lindsey and that whilst they are with us, they will enjoy our shops, restaurants, leisure facilities and our wealth of accommodation. We’re confident that visitor numbers will increase again this year.

As you can see from this programme there is a great deal taking place between 23 June and 1 July and we’d like to formally thank everyone involved in SO Festival 2012, from funders and partners, colleagues, performers, to the technical crew and others who’ve worked tirelessly behind the scenes, for their efforts in bringing our vision to life.

Enjoy the festival!Councillor Doreen Stephenson, Leader of East Lindsey District Council

Peter Knott, Director, Arts Council England in the East Midlands, said: “I’m delighted that Arts Council has been able to support SO Festival again in this momentous year for culture and sport. We’re really proud that Skegness and the SO Festival has become an anticipated part of the UK’s arts scene. This year’s programme promises to have something for everyone and even includes a pig, some camels and three rather unusual lions!

“With a host of first-class performances and arts events, from the small scale to the truly spectacular, it is easy to see why it has become part of the Cultural Olympiad 2012 festival.

“This will be a year like no other, a once in a lifetime experience, and I look forward to seeing you at some of the many events at SO Festival and other events throughout the summer.”

We are delighted to welcome the Olympic Torch to East Lindsey on Wednesday 27 June.

Lionheart ProjectShauna Richardson’s ‘Lionheart Project’ will see three giant lions tour the country in a 16-metre long illuminated glass case.

An ‘Artists taking the lead’ project, part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, Lionheart is one of only 12 commissions in the UK.

The project will feature three giant hand-crocheted lions in a custom-built, mobile, glass case travelling around the East Midlands. These powerful sculptures reflect the region both symbolically and through the materials they are made from. Richard the Lionheart’s three lions crest is created using locally sourced wool, celebrating our rich textile heritage.

Starting on 1 May at Chatsworth in Derbyshire, the lions will tour the East Midlands before arriving at the Natural History Museum in London in time for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Harking back to a travelling menagerie show, the lions will visit Louth (23 – 26 June) and Skegness (27 June), as they reach out to an estimated audience of over half a million people.
