boundaries, try new things, and change it up from time to time, this life is too grand to be anything but boring!

This is normally where I’d give my closing statement and say toodles, but I just have to take a moment to brag about Zorbas Mediterranean Cuisine. Our food review at Zorbas, which you’ll find on pages 46 & 47, was nothing short of phenomenal. I have woken up every day since and have craved a gallon of their house made creamy hummus and I Just feel like you needed to know that. Stop what you’re doing and go try their food; you won’t regret it.

I hope you enjoy this issue and the month of November as it symbolizes many great things. Enjoy your friends and family and don’t forget to stop and give thanks for even the smallest of things, for those are usually what matter most. Cherish this time as the fall is settling in, food is cooking, thanks are abundant and enjoy everything home & living!

Let me just go ahead and get this off my chest that I

am a little (a lot) obsessed with this issue and time of year.

The crisp air has started to make its move on in, the leaves

are slowly but surely changing to pure beauty and falling,

and I’m into everything home interior at the moment. If I

wasn’t in the magazine world (which I absolutely love), I

would like to imagine I’d find myself running a cute little

blog of DIY and home subjects from redoing a home or

space all while showcasing my photography and eating a

cutesy cupcake, yes I had to add that in there. This issue,

as you’ll see, is everything home and living. Besides

the do-it-yourself projects, I’d have to say I absolutely

love the ladies that are Okies (one at heart) and are

showcasing the chic and fun side of home interiors. I

know that I personally would never put home and living

and Oklahoma together as a market, but I was pleasantly

surprised. We have such a market for DIY, repurposing,

chic interiors, fun lifestyles, contemporary pieces, vintage

finds, and more. You don’t have to be standing in the

middle of SoHo, NYC or Highland Park, Dallas (even

though I’m madly in love with those places). The beauty

of home and living is right here in our backyard and being

made into something great by our Oklahomans. Take a

read through our many different home and living pieces

that can help you to organize your kitchen or get some

beautiful handmade art on the bland wall even if you

have never seen yourself as the crafty type. Push your Lauren Wright

and great home-building material. It is estimated

that there are nearly 24 to 50 million empty

shipping containers in the world that will never

be touched again. So needless to say, there isn’t

going to be a shortage of containers anytime

soon. Another major advantage to these homes

is their affordability. The average container home

costs about 20 percent less than a house built out

of typical materials and is considerably easier to

build. The sooner the better, right? On average,

shipping container homes only take a couple of

months to be up and ready to be moved into. This

is ideal for those who are ready to get in their

houses and start settling in.

Let me guess: You probably don’t have an

abundance of shipping containers just lying

around, do you? If you do, then great, you’re in

business . . . but let’s just assume you don’t. Good

news for you! A shipping container can be grabbed

for just over $1,500. Now why in the world would

you need a shipping container, or four? To build

a home, of course! Shipping container homes are

becoming more and more popular due to their

efficiency, durability and modern look.

PROS

Shipping containers range in length from 20

to 30 feet and are both flood-proof and fireproof.

The heavy steel frame is ideal for withstanding

a lot of weight, making them extremely durable

CONS

As with any type of building material, there

can be disadvantages. One downfall is that the

containers are not really suited for climates that

have extreme heat or extreme cold. (We’re looking

at you, Arizona and Alaska.) They can be insulated,

but many do not want to go through the trouble or

spend the money to insulate one of these. Unless

you’re the architect or builder, container-house-

building specialists come few and far between.

Also, as with any other material, you have to keep

in mind the weathering it will take. Eventually

rust can become an annoyance. To try to prevent

this problem, the containers can be covered with

weather-resistant paints. Lastly, keep in mind that

there must be enough free space available for

maneuvering during construction. Many of the

companies used to haul these containers require

a minimum of 100 feet to work with.

The whole idea of a home is to have a place

that displays your taste and personality, truly

showing your character. Your home says a lot

about you. The shipping container home design

may be for you or it may not be. Either way, we’re

totally digging the idea, which can be applied to

home offices and outdoor spaces as well.

CUPCAKE LINERS\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

It just so happens a majority of us,

bakers and non-bakers alike (we’re

not sure why, maybe we just like

them), have a hundred of these lying

around in weird places and in all

different patterns and colors.

Credit: Brit.co

What You Need:

• Cupcake liners

• Mason Jar

It’s simple, grab a mason jar, stack

them together, seal shut, and voila!

Not only are they now easy to grab

and all in one spot, but also they’re

pretty to look at.

Page 15: So6ix Magazine November 2014

SPICE UP THE SPOONS & SPATULAS\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

So maybe you don’t have plenty of drawer space open, but have plenty of cabinet space yet don’t

want all of the boring kitchen utensils lying around unless they add something to the space. With this

easy step-by-step process you can take simple utensils to a piece of art displayed on the cabinet.

Credit: Craftinessisnotoptional.com

What You Need:

• Wooden/Bamboo Utensils

• Paint

• Paint Brush

• Masking Tape

• Clear Enamel Spray

Steps:

• Tape off where you want wood to show through or where you’re going to put a different color of paint

• Paint two coats and let dry; move on to the second area of color (if you have one) once dry and paint

two coats, let dry.

• Remove the tape pieces once handle is dry and cover the utensil end with foil and spray evenly with

clear enamel spray.

• Let dry and place with ends out in a cut container on the countertop.

• Be sure that these utensils are hand wash only!

CHALK IT UP\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Chalkboard this, chalkboard that; it’s becoming oh so popular, especially around the house, and we

are not complaining. This is a trend I may never get sick of. It’s classic, looks great with almost any décor

style, and is so easy to do. Say goodbye to your days of picking up every spice and reading the side

label, it’s all written on top!

Credit: Momtastic.com

What You Need:

• Mason Jar or Spice Bottles (or both!)

• Chalkboard Spray Paint

• Chalk

• Newspaper (or protective layer for your surface)

Steps:

• Remove lids and clean thoroughly, you want the paint to stick.

• Lay down your newspaper and place the lids (not the rings that secure the lids) on the paper. Spray

evenly with chalkboard paint.

• Let the lids completely dry. Use chalk color of your choice to write your labels

• Fill the jars and set them in the pantry, on the counter, or fill up a drawer!

RECIPE BOX\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Raise your hand if you have a drawer that could be valuable space, but is just filled with stacks of

recipes ripped from magazines, printed from your computer, or given to you by friends? My hand is

raised high! This tedious task will get you organized, cooking recipes you forgot you had, and filling up

the drawer with new items.

Credit: Brit.co

What You Need:

• Wooden, Paper, or Vintage Box

• Paper or Cardstock

• Note Cards & Tabs

• Scissors

• Pen

• Recipes

Steps:

• Find the perfect box for you. We love the idea of a wooden box that you can hand paint, cover with

craft paper and modge podge, or a vintage box that has stolen your heart.

• Cut the cardstock to fit end to end in the box, leaving a spot for a tab, or you can buy pre-made tabs at

a craft or supply store.

• Label the cardstock such as soups, desserts, snacks, etc.

• Print or handwrite your recipes on to note cards and place in corresponding category. Long recipe?

You can use front and back or staple two together!

• Sit the box on your countertop as a decoration accent or a conversation piece!

• Let dry and place with ends out in a cut container on the countertop.

• Be sure that these utensils are hand wash only!

White Walls No-MoreGallery walls are the perfect way

to hang what you want, fill up a lot of space, and make the entire wall a focal point in the room. What is great about this, there’s no rules. Obviously you’re going to need some framed pieces to hang and maybe a couple of pieces that aren’t necessarily framed, but that’s totally up to you. We love the idea of framed art that is a combination of some that’s handmade and some that’s bought, but again that is totally up to your tastes and skill set. Credit: Brit.co

‘Cause I’m happy! These dotted canvases make the perfect addition to any room. They add a

little flair that is often needed. What’s great here is you don’t have to just stop at one canvas, make a

square with four, nine, or place the canvases into rows. The world is your canvas, literally in this case.

Choose any colors that fancy you! We love the idea of a pop of color that isn’t necessarily a theme

throughout your space or sticking within the same color scheme but choosing different shades for a

more organized look.

Credit: Shopsweetthings.com

Materials:

• At least 1 canvas (can use however many you’d like)

• Acrylic Paint

• Potato or dot brush

• Water

• Ruler/Measuring Tape

Steps:

• Believe it or not, these canvas polka dots were made with a small potato that had been cut, but you can

also use a polka dot sponge paint brush

• Start by measuring the canvas into even

rows of where the dots will be placed

• Choose colors that you think would

compliment your space or add a pop of

color; you can stick with shades of blue

and gray or go for every color of the

rainbow to add color to a monotone home.

• Start dipping the brush into your desired

paint color and transferring to the canvas

• Let dry and hang!

Do a little dance for some texture! Let’s just

assume your walls are completely flat and one

everything right with adding some texture and

NATIONAL DAYS IN NOVEMBER

Genevieve Gorder

This lovely lady is both a star television host

and an interior designer. She currently hosts

“Genevieve’s Renovation” and “Dear Genevieve”

on the HGTV channel. She is also a judge on

HGTV’s “Design Star.” Many of you may know her

as one of the original designers on the former

TLC show “Trading Spaces.” Genevieve is known

for her soulful designs and her unusual habit of

working barefoot. On her most recent series,

“Genevieve’s Renovation,” she welcomes the

public into her own life and Manhattan home,

designing for herself and her daughter.

Design Advice from Genevieve: • Keep kitchens simple: the tasks that occur in

these spaces are complex.

• Ban the beige: Paint is one of the least expensive

ways to transform a house, and it’s very easy to

change if you don’t like it. Gray is Gorder’s new

go-to neutral.

• Keep it personal: When designing or redecorating,

put together vignettes of personal items that will

make people pause to look at them. Tell a story

about yourself.

• Keep evolving your style.

Happy Thanksgiving BannerWe’ve made something similar for Halloween, except out of burlap and paint, remember? This time

we’re spicing it up with a little glitter or colored paint and on actual letters not burlap. This is perfect to

hang on the wall behind your table setting or hang in the entry way as guests arrive.

Credit: HGTV.com

Materials:

• Wooden or paper letters

• Modge Podge

• Glitter or paint

• Twine

• Hot Glue & Glue Gun

Instructions:

• We’re totally leaving it up to you here what

you want to spell for the holidays! We went

with, Give Thanks. Choose the letters

needed to spell your saying and lay them out.

• Using paint or modge podge, paint your letters evenly and sprinkle with glitter if desired.

• Once dry, flip the letters over, face down, and place hot glue on the back of the tops of the letters. You

may do one letter at a time so the hot glue doesn’t dry and place the twine into the glue. Pull fairly taut.

• Hang in desired area and enjoy!

It’s the month we celebrate Thanksgiving and we are thankful for many things, a few of them being for

delicious recipes and a chicly set table. We are major fans of tradition, but that doesn’t mean you can’t

spice it up a little with additional recipes, a fun new way to set the table, and of course DIY decorations.

It’s that time of year we can eat, drink, and be thankful together (in style)!

Rosemary Sprig Place Cards

Who doesn’t love a personal touch? Show

your guests you care, not by just putting

lasting impression on family and friends.

Cranberry Ginger FizzHave a delicious drink waiting for your guests as they sit down. This is sure to warm them up and give

them a little refreshment before the indulging in delicious dishes begins. Club soda & cranberry can be

served for those under 21.

Credit: Brit.Co

Ingredients:

• ½ cup fresh cranberries

• 1 bottle ginger beer

• Gin

• ½ pear

• ½ lime

• Simple syrup

• Rosemary sprig for garnish

Steps:

• Muddle the cranberries and pear inside a glass or bowl.

• Add lime juice and simple syrup.

• Add some gin (this is up to you on how strong you want the drinks)

• Shake with ice in a shaker and strain into glass.

• Top off with ginger beer and add a garnish of fresh cranberries and rosemary sprigs.

A Runner & Pumpkin Filled TableOur advice: every table needs a runner. This is the

piece that can completely pull the table together,

add a pop of fall colors or a touch of rustic-ness (we

made that word up). The one pictured is from Crate

& Barrel, but if you’re up for a DIY runner – go for it

girlfriend [or boyfriend]! This is the season for the

pumpkin to shine! Check out your local farmers

market or favorite grocery store and pick up an

abundance of smaller sized gourds. You know us;

we’re all about DIY. You don’t have to leave them

completely plain, spice it up with a little paint or gold

glitter to add some flair to the table.

Instagram: The platform where you can find pictures and accounts of just

about anything, but my personal favorite is home décor and lifestyle that

share modern and chic pictures. Naturally coming across Brittany Viklund’s

Instagram, I fell in love with the beauty of her pictures and most importantly her

talent. She showcases her chic and crafty life for all to see and it’s inspiring.

Meet Brittany Here:

1. You grew up in New Mexico, what do you think about moving to Oklahoma

and our art/design scene here?

My appreciation for art/design was molded by my experiences growing

up in New Mexico, a place I found to be rich with a variety of cultures and

creativity. One of the many things I love about Oklahoma is how much the

community supports local art and business, I’ve never experienced a place

with so much local pride before.

2. Where do you get your inspiration/passion for decorating, creating,

and art?

Environments and photographs inspire me. Whether being in an eclectic

pizza restaurant in the Plaza District, or a campsite, a friend's home, thumbing

through a magazine or sailing through Pinterest, I'm always absorbing the

images and environments around me.

3. What are your future plans or goals?

I would love to merge my passion for early childhood education and art into

one and write and illustrate children's books one day. I'm also currently in the

processes of redesigning my blog and creating a source where I can share

my thoughts and ideas and do more custom work, particularly couple/family

portraits and wedding stationary suites.

4. What's your favorite spot in your home and why?

Under our gallery wall on our big plush sectional. This is "my spot" and

where my husband and I spend our time when we are home, be it in the

in the evening enjoying each other's company.

5. Piece of advice to those who are looking to redecorate an area or add in

some art?

Don't give in to the temptation to complete or finish an area immediately.

Start with what you've got and let the space or room evolve with meaning. Let

yourself be surprised through the process!

6. Favorite color, go!

RASPBERRY!

7. You created all of the art for your wedding (invitations, signage, programs,

etc.).  Where did you get your craftiness from?

This credit goes directly to my mother. She ensured that I was surrounded with

open-ended materials and tools as a child and always had her hands in some

sort of project as well. I have vivid memories of her frequently moving furniture

and art around the house, spending hours creating a mural on a wall at my

grandmas house or her boutique, and constantly creating an environment,

wherever she was, that was beautiful.

8. What's your favorite part about decorating, designing, and creating?

Everything tells a story. Our homes tell the stories of our lives, what we value

and who we are. The art I am able to create tells a story as well, and I enjoy

taking those stories and communicating them through ink.

9. Tell us a fun and random fact about yourself!

When people learn about what I do now I find that they are often surprised

that I was Miss New Mexico USA 2011. I love sharing this fact because my year

as Miss New Mexico USA and my experiences competing at Miss USA were

equally humbling and formative to who I am now. I was teaching Pre-K at this

time and when my students were learning about graphing I had them choose

the color of my evening gown for Miss USA, which ended up being blue!

N O V E M B E R 2 0 1 4BY Dadhichi Toth

www.astrology.com.au

arise for a little while after the 21st when Venus and Neptune challenge your romantic sensibilities. You probably won't want to believe the truth even if it's staring you in the face.

PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 20) This is an excellent time to communicate your needs to your employer or to start a new job. Between the 12th and the 16th you’ll be busily engaged in ferreting out information that can help your cause in a professional sense. Remember to consider who you are as much as what you want to do. What you want to do should reflect the love and passion you have for the gifts your were born with. What are those gifts? Ponder that question this month. Strive for clarity.

ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 19) You will make some important breakthroughs in relationships and this will be based upon emotional sharing with those you love. Make sure the sharing isn't lopsided though. Whatever dreams you have can now be fulfilled thanks to the Mars and Neptune connection. After the 13th you'll feel cool in your affection but this is nothing to be alarmed about as the Venus and Saturn transit is short lived. Venus enters your zone of long journeys after the 17th and this could be the time to take a holiday especially the social, recreational and romantic reasons.

TAURUS (APRIL 20 - MAY 20)Exciting but challenging workplace developments

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 - DECEMBER 21)Your creative ideas take shape around the 12th with Mercury and Neptune offering you deep insights. The Sun conjunct Saturn on the 18th shows a deeper and more serious side to your personality trying to work though how to best approach your responsibilities. Wonderful, zany and exciting relationships punctuate your month on the 27th so November should end on a fine note especially with Mercury entering your Sun sign on the 28th.

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 19)Friendships and all sorts of social activities will fill your diary this month. Although you've had some issues with friends, this is a time to celebrate and enjoy those you trust and who've been supportive. In particular the 2nd will intensify your relationships but don’t overdo things on the 10th when Venus and Jupiter indicate you may be accepting invitations simply for the sake of ego. Relationships could cool down a little on the 13th but the low key position of Venus on the 17th means you prefer to enjoy your social engagements in a close knit environment - entertaining at home.

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 18)Slow, steady work is ideal leading up to the 13th with Venus and Saturn combining in your professional zone. Remain cool or even aloof to extract the best from any opportunity. When Venus enters your zone of friendships on the 17th you'll feel better and have more time to dedicate to your social circle of friends. Confusion could

Page 45: So6ix Magazine November 2014

so6ix.com | NOVEMBER 2014 45

create confusion but just stick to your guns and push for that coveted position around the 13th. Relationships may sour at this time but don’t complicate things. Allow your partner space to work through their own problems. Take some time out and travel if you can around the 17th. You will enjoy your time away up until the 21st. A previous meeting may have floundered but only to be resuscitated again after the 27th. Be careful not to trust your first impressions too much after the 28th. Balance your judgments based upon observation not just feeling.

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 20)You can’t control other people and their spending habits this month so don’t try to impose your will on them, it just won't work. Around the 4th there may be some unexpected financial complications which will end in disputes. Once again, after the 24th the same situation may recur. You'll be overloaded with work due to the Sun, Venus and Saturn in your zone of workplace activities but this gives you the chance to showcase your talents. This is the time when life may bring you a prime opportunity to move up the ladder of success.

CANCER (JUNE 21 - JULY 22)Your life will be like a pendulum now and you’ll be oscillating between judicious saving and crazy even compulsive spending. Finding the happy balance between both won't be easy. Greater responsibilities are added to your life after the 18th with the combined influence of the Sun and Saturn. Karmic issues and longstanding personal relationships are under scrutiny. Children, if you're a parent, may be part of a growing burden which needs to be addressed.

LEO (JULY 23 - AUGUST 22)You’re in keeping with social and cultural trends. Doing things outside the norm invokes the displeasure of others and because you don’t want this, especially in your professional activities you will play it more conservatively. Love affairs take a turn for the better after the 17th with Venus entering your fifth zone of romance. By the 21st the square aspect of Neptune shows confusion about how to act towards the one you love. When Mercury conjoins with Saturn on the 26th, your feelings could cool off quickly. Resuscitation of these romantic feelings will occur again on the 28th and the 30th.

VIRGO (AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 22) Excessive emotional expression should be avoided this month as you're likely to dig yourself into a ditch. Don't try to accommodate too many people particularly around the 10th when Venus and Jupiter move into a hard aspect. You're prone to mishap around the 13th so double-check your schedules and make sure you don't rush from appointment to appointment. Good luck and happy relationships fostered by Mercury and Mars around the 22nd but try not to exaggerate any claims at this time. Some joyful events on the home front are indicated around the 28th.

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 - OCTOBER 22)The month takes off positively with excellent communications on the 1st. Teaching, advertising and other forms of language fascinate you and assist you in achieving your goals. Your super high level of energy around the 18th indicates conflicts and arguments and possibly even some mishap or injury. Don’t overdo your exercise regime either. Study, education and high level discussions are likely around the 28th.

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 - NOVEMBER 21)Dealing with your partner after the 7th may be difficult as they could be suffering some health problems or some doubts about their future career direction. Listen more than you talk. With Venus moving to your zone of income on the 17th, this could mark a time of increased income for yourself but also a resolution for problems to your spouse or partner. Don’t let the Sun cause you to overspend on the 22nd.

Upon walking in to Zorbas you can smell, feel and eventually taste authenticity that has been in the making for over 20 years. This extremely fresh Mediterranean cuisine is bursting with flavors from around the world. Heading the kitchen is executive Chef Nordeen Bennai that has an extensive background in cuisine around our city. He was chef at the well-known Café 501 for 13 years and has

had his hands in many other restaurants around town. Growing up in Morocco, Bennai was constantly influenced and immersed into strong and diverse flavors. Upon coming over here 30 years ago, he brought with him a taste of home and it vibrantly shows in his dishes. There was not one thing we tasted that didn’t leave me saying “WOW.” You know the feeling with you walk into your mothers kitchen and you have a delicious home cooked meal where you can feel the love put into it and the flavors and authenticity of it are incomparable to anything else? That’s how I felt at Zorbas today. It was those bites of delicious dishes that tasted like they were made in my mothers kitchen with hours of love and layers of flavor. Chef Bennai is gluten free himself, so we can assure you there are delicious food allergy free options! Our senses were first awakened by the mango habanero margarita, deliciously surprising (if you like a little zing)! The Mediterranean twist on the Osso Buco was uh-maze-ing; we were on the bus to flavor town. Being such a hummus lover I’m pretty particular about my hummus, all I have to say is can I buy theirs by the gallon with a large spoon please? In all seriousness, the food, drinks, staff and overall experience were nothing short of amazing. I can’t wait to go back, ASAP!

Our Tastes:Mango Habanero Margarita – House made habanero infused Titos vodka, sweet and sour, and mango puree.

Pomegranate Margarita – House gold tequila, pomegranate liqueur, Bols triple sec, sweet and sour – rimmed with sugar.

Calamari – Tender lightly breaded calamari rings, cooked crisp and golden brown, served with house-made tomato garlic dipping sauce.

Hummus – Authentic homemade rich and creamy hummus served with pita bread and chips.

Ruby Rainbow Trout – Lemon-scented, grilled ruby trout served over sautéed zucchini, squash, carrots, red peppers, grape tomatoes, butter beans and fresh spinach in a garlic vin blanc sauce.

Osso Buco – Their famous lamb shank braised with homemade tomatoes and garlic sauce until tender. Served with vegetables on a bed of basmati rice.

Catalan Chicken – Marinated grilled chicken breast served with garlic spinach mashed potatoes, mushrooms & grape tomatoes sautéed in a basil butter sauce & grilled asparagus.

Kabobs – Chicken, steak and vegetables marinated and grilled to perfection placed on top of basmati rice.

W XYZ BAR & GRILLE209 N. Walnut Ave.

A beautiful new, modern addition to the Deep Deuce district in Oklahoma City, W XYZ Bar & Grille at the Aloft Hotel is serving up delicious sips and bites. I recommend the Strawberry Club Special to start. It’s a refreshing twist on a delicious cocktail. Snack while you drink: W XYZ offers delicious options, both hot and cold, like beef and asparagus bundles and parmesan potato chips . . . can you say yum?! Hungrier for more than just a snack? Dive into the W XYZ Burger, made of grilled Kobe beef, or try their raved-about vegetable lasagna. We’re a little obsessed with their chicken and waffles: a Belgian waffle, fried chicken, brown sugar syrup and honey. Finish off the night with blueberry bread pudding or fried cheesecake! This little gem’s playful vibe makes it a great spot to meet an old friend or have a fun and flirty date night.

CARISSA STEVENSFounder & Owner of Scout Studios

Carissa Stevens grew up in Southeast Asia and the

Middle East. She and her mother spent their time flying all

over, to places like Hong Kong and Indonesia. They would

find themselves at side street shops, where they would dig

through materials and pieces and come back home with

inexpensive items. Carissa’s notion was that these items

would never amount to anything until she got her hands

on them. It was in those moments that she thought, “I could

see myself doing this forever.” Her dream is now a reality

with Scout Studios, an e-commerce site and blog duo that

allows Carissa to live out her passion for repurposing while

documenting the process.

Carissa prides herself on being able to find pieces in the

most unlikely places. In fact, one of her favorite pieces came

from on the side of the road on Big Trash Day and is now a

beautiful green bamboo chest that would add a pop of color to any space. She is a firm believer in

being able to find cool stuff anywhere, not in just the popular marked-up shops. Her advice: forget

where you are and really see the piece for what it is. Forget that you’re not in a fancy shop in Dallas

or New York City, and look at the piece’s bones. What are “bones,” you ask? Carissa explains: A

piece with good bones, or a good structural base, is like a blank canvas. When something has

good bones, it can be repurposed in almost any way. It’s important to stay away from things that are

warped, molded or torn apart completely, because these don’t have the bones you’re looking for to

ensure quality redoing. If it has good bones and you see a vision for it, snag it up!

Carissa made a bold move when she

started down this path. Scout Studios will

sell a little bit of everything when it comes

to décor, but we can assure you that it’s all

being handpicked and personally redone

by Carissa and her boyfriend, with the

exception of upholstery. Some items, like

pottery and blankets, will be sold as-is.

Outside of her venture, Carissa immerses

herself in the community and the arts. Each

year she co-chairs a committee for the Arts

Festival. Her favorite food? Indian! Her go-to interior paint color? Grays for days, she says. You can

see more of her stuff at scout-studios.com, or find her on Instagram: @scoutstudiosokc.
