5 Purpose

This module is designed to foster the interest of learners in soccer and to provide a

basic proficiency in and understanding of the sport. It provides an introduction to

basic coaching skills applied to soccer and a general orientation to the National

Coaching Development Programme (NCDP).

This is an elective module for the Level 4 Certificate.

Successful completion of the module learners will obtain the Introduction to

Coaching in Soccer as outlined in the National Coaching Development Programme.

6 Preferred Entry Level

Level 3 Certificate, Junior Certificate or equivalent.

7 Special Requirements

Providers The content and delivery for this course should relate to

developments in the NCDP. The prior approval of the Football

Association of Ireland will be required. Evidence of this

approval must be displayed using the approval form at the end of

this module descriptor.

Candidates Candidates must be 16 years of age or over on completion of the

module.

8 General Aims

Candidates who successfully complete this module will:

8.1 Develop basic ability in the skills and tactics of soccer so that

the learner can take part in the sport

8.2 Explain what is happening during a game/event in which s/he is

participating or observing

8.3 Examine sports coaching and his/her own suitability for the

coaching task

8.4 Assist in basic planning and coaching in the sport of soccer,

taking account of enjoyment and safety factors

8.5 Display the basic coaching skills (communication,

demonstration, observation/analysis, providing feedback) in

coaching in soccer.

Specific Learning Outcomes are grouped as three units.

1 The Sport

Unit 1 The Sport

The learner should be able to:

1.1 display the basic skills of soccer

1.2 participate in the game of soccer

1.3 apply the principles of soccer in a game situation

1.4 explain the fundamental rules of soccer

1.5 outline the basic principles of soccer

1.6 conduct introductory activities to develop basic tactics in soccer

1.7 identify the contact mechanisms within the Football Association

of Ireland for further development as a coach and player

1.8 conduct basic introductory activities to develop the techniques

and skills of soccer.

Unit 2 The Participant

The learner should be able to:

2.1 outline basic human growth and development as it applies to

participation in soccer

2.2 list the dangers of early specialisation and an over-emphasis on

winning in soccer

2.3 explain the importance of promoting positive and enjoyable

experiences for participants in soccer

2.4 state the reasons why people take part in soccer

2.5 explain the function of warm-up and cool-down

2.6 demonstrate a warm-up and cool-down

2.7 outline a basic skill development framework

2.8 conduct a session using a basic skill development model.

11 Assessment

Soccer Competencies: mandatory

Practical Coaching: 55%

Logbook: 25%

Oral Examination: 20%

11.1 Technique Soccer Competencies

Format Candidates must perform all of the skills listed in Individual

Candidate Marking Sheet 1, to a level which enables them to

play soccer. Performance Criteria indicate the level of

competence required.

Candidates must demonstrate competence in all of the required

skills, in order to gain a pass in the module.

11.2 Technique Practical Coaching 55%

Candidates plan and deliver part of a coaching session, duration

approximately 20 minutes.

The practical coaching requirement will allow the learners to

demonstrate an ability to work with participants at the

Introduction to Coaching Level. Performance Criteria are

indicated on Individual Candidate Marking Sheet 2.

Candidates must achieve a minimum of 50% in practical

coaching in order to gain a pass in the module.

11.3 Technique Logbook 25%

Candidates keep a record of assisting at five coaching sessions.

The completed log-book will allow the student to display the

skills of planning, record-keeping and self-evaluation associated

with coaching and to develop confidence in conducting coaching

sessions.

Performance Criteria are indicated on Individual Candidate

Marking Sheet 3.

11.4 Technique Oral Examination 20%

Format an oral question and answer session will be carried out by the

assessor before, during and after the practical examination, as

appropriate (see Individual Candidate Marking Sheet 4).

12 Performance Criteria

12.1 Soccer The competencies to be displayed are listed on Individual

12.2 Practical The learner will be marked according to the criteria on

Coaching the Individual Candidate Marking Sheet 2.

12.3 Logbook The learner will be marked according to the criteria on

the Individual Candidate Marking Sheet 3.

12.4 Oral The learner will be marked according to the criteria on

Examination Individual Candidate Marking Sheet 4.

A special requirement of this module is that the provider must secure the approval of the Football Association of Ireland.

evidence of approval and should be available for FETAC External Authenticator. This process must take place in

conjunction with the normal FETAC application procedure.
