I. ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND: Society for Children (SOCH) is currently operational in three locations of Odisha, viz. Bhubaneswar, Berhampur and Puri. It works towards rescue and resettlement of runaway, missing or lost and abandoned children (through project Rakshyak). It also works for the behavior modification of the hard core street children (through project Punarjivan) who have for some reasons been separated from their family for a longer duration or have fall prey to addictions, child labor, beggary, etc. SOCH operates on the philosophy that the safest and happiest place for children is with their family & homes. Hence, the first objective of SOCH after rescuing a child is to locate & contact his/her family and reunite them. For those children whose family could not be traced, they are forwarded to Child Care Institutions (CCI) run by the Government. Here again SOCH (through project Pankh) helps in mainstreaming these youths through skill development and placement assistance from the age of 16 years. Along with tracing and reuniting the child with their families due effort is made to analyze the real reason behind the separation. This is achieved through counseling to both, the child and the parents. The counselor understands the reason behind the act and educates the child about the ill effects of platform life. This also helps in establishing a healthy relationship between the two. The reunion is followed by Monthly and Quarterly Follow-ups to ascertain the well-being of the child. Going by the last 5 financial year statistics, SOCH has rescued 3900 children (455 cases being referred by Stakeholders) till 30th September 2017 of which 2776 have been reunited with their families.
