Berlin 1945-1949

• We’ve talked about how the Germany was separated.

• The City of Berlin was situated 175 miles within East Germany (Communist).

• It was divided in the same manner as the country. (US, UK, FR, and USSR).

Stalin get’s ticked!

• The new Deutsche Mark was becoming the preferred currency in both east and west.

• The West revitalized (with the Marshall Plan) much faster then the East.

• Stalin witnessed this as a threat to Communism.

A New Berlin

• June 24, 1948. • Stalin blocks all transportation by Rail, Road,

or Canal.• The 2.1 West Berliners were cut off from all

supplies. • The US idea of Containment meant complete

support for its allies in Germany.

Berlin Airlift

• The west began to fly supplies in.

• They calculated caloric intake and amount of food for each person.

• Fish, baked goods, Salt, everything needed to be shipped in.

Perspectives

• The East said it was a futile attempt to save its capitalist position.

• The west (America) said it was proof that nothing could stop progress.

It’s effect• At the height, a plane landed every three

minutes. • Airports got larger and more efficient. • Crews would not leave the planes, just have

unloading crew and take off again. • Over 11 months, 277 804 flights landed.• 17 American and 8 British plans crashed.

The Berlin Wall

• As tensions grew between both east and west, the Russian wanted to stop the drain to Capitalism.

• At midnight on August 12, 1961 the soldiers actually blocked the streets within the city.

• They tore up streets and put barbed wire in. • Soon it grew into a more elaborate fence with

two walls and a distinct no-mans land.

The End of the Wall

• By 1989 the government fell. • The wall officially fell in November 1989.• It took much longer to tear it down, much still

remains. • The guards at this point become a joke and

have no authority. • People pass openly from East to West. • Finally German reunifies in 1990.
