Social sustainability ‘individuals at the heart of priorities’
Social sustainability places the individual at theheart of its priorities and is the individuals thatbuild the success of companies. When workersoperate in an appropriate environment byvaluing and training them, they will greatlyincrease the productivity of the plant. A sociallyresponsible work environment promotesinnovation and reduces absence from work.
In general, through the evolution of workers ina healthy environment, they will become bettercitizens for their country and contribute moreeffectively to the growth of society.

Moroccan Fisheries Sector: SUSTAINING EXCEPTIONAL RESOURCES !
The sustainability of fisheries resources has become the main axis of the
development strategy of the sea fishing sector in Morocco named
HALIEUTIS aiming to ensure the protection and sustainabilty of the species
for future generations.
The management of this sector in Morocco is based on three main axes:
- efficient scientific research
- effective management plans
- control of continuous fishing activities
‘An Engaged Approach for sustainability initiatives’
• Within the framework of the HALIEUTIS strategy several development
plans were elaborated ensuring that 90% of the resources were sustainably
managed.
• These plans are supported and based on biological, environmental,
technical and socio-economic knowledge. The institution of these plans
has many objectives particularly the conservation of resources, the
increasing added value and sustainability of the activity.
• As a result, the management of the fisheries contributed to social
promotion, improving knowledge and adapting the fishing effort to the
stock status.
A responsible and competitive fishing
Morocco incorporates the ecosystem approach in its fisheries management strategy to protect and restore marine biodiversity and promote sustainable fishing practice.
Regarding the modernization of fishing fleet and responsible fishing techniques, Halieutis promotes in priority:
Fishing crew safety
Decent living conditions on-board fishing vessels
Product quality and safety
Banning certain fishing gears
Use of proper gears and reduction of by-catch and discards
Protection of marine biodiversity and eco-systems
The fisheries management plans have integrated:
the creation and management of Marine Protected Areas
The construction of artificial reefs, both on the Mediterranean (Sidi Hssain, Cala Iris, Martil Bay) and Atlantic facades (Souiria Kdima, Agadir Bay), with a focus on artisanal fisheries
The current initiatives within our Federation
Many member companies and associations of the FENIP take good initiatives as part ofcorporate social sustainability by improving the environment of the workers :
• Social insurance for workers
• Companies offer accommodation for their workers since many of them come fromother cities and neighbourhoods
• They transport to and from the factory
• They offer numerous trainings as well as functional literacy courses
• They have childcare facilities available to facilitate the integration of women
• Some companies have even created associations that work to defend and protectthe well-being of workers, especially women.
• Many companies have obtained prestigious private certifications that attest(through sometimes very high marks A +) that these companies are at the level ofthe best international social practices.
In addition, our federation, member associations in partnership with the Department ofMaritime Fisheries are engaged in a project to improve the Sardina Pilchardus fisherywhose objectives are oriented towards the sustainable use of these resources and theculmination of MSC certification.
On the other hand, our federation in partnership with the Moroccan Agency for thePromotion of Small and Medium Enterprises organized a vast training and awarenessprogram on operational excellence that highlights the importance of social sustainability.
Perspective: The Moroccan fishing industry on the possible outcomes of the
Sustainable Developing Objectives from the UN for 2030
The Moroccan Seafood industry is implementing its development strategy that
gives social sustainability a place of choice. The fishing industry contributes to
food security and increased protein and omega-3 consumption in many parts of
the world by offering quality products that respect international best practices.
In addition, over 75% of the seafood industry employees are women. Work in
seafood processing plants contributes to empowering women workers and
improving their economic and social conditions.
With the results that could be achieved through the UN's 2030 Sustainable
Development Goals, this industry aims to achieve improved and facilitated
access to incentives for socially sustainable production.
