WHATARESOCIALCONTEXTPLACEMENTS?PurposeSocialContextPlacements(SCPs)enableyoutoencounteracontextthatisoutsidethechurchandwithwhichyouhavelittleornopreviousexperienceasanadultlearner.Awidevarietyofcontextsareonoffer,rangingfromtheprisonservicetothearmedforces,fromhospicestoschools,orfromprojectswithhomelesspeopletocommunityyouthwork.Byimmersingyourselfinsuchacontextyouwillhoneyourabilitytoobserveandlearnaboutanewsettingand,importantly,youwillgainanempatheticandsensitiveunderstandingofsomeofthetheologicalissuesandmissiologicalquestionsthatareraisedforthechurchbythecontext.Finally,youwillexploreyourownemotional,spiritualandintellectualresponsestoyourexperiencethatwillenhanceanddeepenyourformationforChristiandiscipleshipandministry.
SCP'scoreaimsaretoenableyouto
1. seetheworldasitappearstopeoplewhoworkinotherprofessions,disciplinesandlife-contexts,andtoreflecttheologicallyuponthis.
2. developadegreeofcomfortinoperatingwithintheseenvironments.
3. observeanddeveloppastoralskillsrelevanttooneofthesecontexts.
4. takeresponsibilityforyourownlearninginchoosingandmanagingyourplacement.
BreadthThesocialcontextplacementsthatweofferspantwokindsofbreadth:1. Christianorsecular?
Someplacementsareconnectedtothechurch,eventhoughtheyoperateoutsidethechurch.Examplesofsuchcontextsarehospital,hospice,schoolandprisonchaplaincies.TheygiveinsightintoaformofChristian(andpriestly)ministryoutsidetheinstitutionalchurchthatisrecognisablyandovertlyChristian.Othersmaybeprojects,organisationsorministriessupportedprimarilybyChristians,alocalchurch,agroupofchurchesoranationalchurch.ExamplesofthesearetheRomseyMillProjectforyoungpeople,ChristianAidandLyn’sHouse.Otherplacementsmaybewithorganisationsthathavenoconnectionwiththechurch.Theseincludemanycarehomes,Jimmy’sNightShelter,theMentalHealthDrop-inCentreandmentoringpupilsinschools.Theseofferagoodopportunitytoimmerseyourselfinthecompanyofotherswhosharemanyofyourvalues,oftenwithoutafaithperspective.2. Structuredorunstructured?
Placementsalsodifferinthewaytheyexpectyoutoengagewiththeplacement.Someofferhighlystructuredplacementsthatincludesomeinductionanddebriefingsessionsbyaplacementsupervisor(suchasahospicechaplain),andhaveatimetableforyourimmersioninthecontext.Examplesofthesekindsofplacementsarehospitals,chaplaincies,thearmedforcesandtheprisonservice.

Othersaremuchlessstructuredandofferamodelof“gettingstuckin”totheworkoftheorganisationorgroup,orofcreatingabespokeprogrammeforyou.ExamplesofthesekindsofplacementsincludeLyn’sHouse,Jimmy’sNightShelterandBesom.Forsomeofthese,youmayneedtobecommittedtotheplacementoveralongerperiodthanisformallyrequired.Forexample,AtRomseyMill,orwhenmentoringschoolchildren,youwillbeformingrelationshipswithyoungpeoplethatyouwillneedtohonourandmaintainbycontinuingtovolunteerbeyondyourformalplacementperiod.
ExpectationsThediversityofcontextsofferedbySCPstranslatesintodifferentlevelsofengagementwithsupervisors.
Inthemorestructuredtypesofplacement,supervisorsmayoffertimeforaonetooneorgroupsupervision,aswellasofferingsomeexpertiseandinsightrelatingtotheplacementitself–suchasworkingwitholderpeople,understandingdementiaorexplainingtheprinciples,practicesandframeworksofworkingasapadreinthemilitary.
Inothertypesofplacement,however,youmaynotreceivemuch–orany–formalsupervision.Itmaybepossibletoseekthisout,dependingonthecontext,butitmaybeuptoyoutofindconversationpartnersandresourcestohelpyoureflectonandmakesenseofyourexperienceandobservations.
Inallcases,however,therewillbeanamedpersonwhowillbeabletovouchforyourinvolvementinthecontext,eveniftheycannotmakedetailedcommentsonthequalityandnatureofyourparticipation.
Giventhislackofparity,oneoftheessentialingredients–andopportunities–ofasuccessfulSCPisyourabilityandwillingnesstotakeresponsibilityforyourownlearning.InmanywaysitisuptoyoutochooseaSocialContextPlacement.Therearemanyforwhichweprovidecontactsanddetails,butitmaybethatyouhaveaninterestinaparticularsphereoflifeandwishtosetupaSocialContextPlacementindependently.ThisisperfectlyacceptableandyoushouldsimplyensureyoukeepyourDOPSinformedofyourplansandusehim/herasasoundingboardasyoudothat.
YouwillbeexpectedtoproducesomewrittenworkbasedonyourSocialContextPlacement.Thedetailsofthisaresetoutinthenextsection.Inorderforyoutobeabletofulfilthis,itisvitalthatyoukeepalogofyouractivitiesandajournalofyourencountersandreflectionsthroughoutthetimeinplacement.Thesewillbetherawmaterialfromwhichyouwillchoosesomeaspecttoreflecttheologicallyupon.Inmanyplacementsitmaybeusefultowritedownverbatimconversationsthatyouhavehadorheardthatstruckyouasparticularlysignificant,disturbingorenlightening.Capturingtheseatthetimeoftheplacementis,ofcourse,vitaltohavinganaccuraterecord.
StructureBroadlyspeaking,youareexpectedtospendtheequivalentofafull-timeworkingweekinactiveengagementinyourSocialContextPlacement(moredetailedrequirementsaresetoutinthenextsection).Forsomeplacementsthismeanstakingaweekoutoftermtimeforthis–duringtheChristmas,Easterorsummerholidays.Otherplacementsmayinvolvearegularweeklycommitmentoveranumberofweeksormonths.Stillothers,becauseofthenatureofthecommitment,mayinvolvevolunteeringovermuchoftheacademicyear.

Itisuptoyoutotakeresponsibilityforworkingoutwhenyouareavailabletocommityourselfgivenyourotherteachingandlearning,familyandcollegeresponsibilities.Itwillbeimportant,however,tohonourthecommitmentsthatyoumaketotheplacementandtoinformappropriatestaffofanunanticipatedandunavoidableabsence.
HOWDOSCPsFITINTOMYTRAININGPATHWAY? AlmostallstudentsdoaSocialContextPlacementintheirfirstyearoftraining.Theremaybeexceptionstothis,butitisadvisabletocheckwithyourDirectorofPastoralStudiesatthebeginningofyourfirstyear.Itwillbeimportantforyoutowriteadetailedlogandanin-depthjournalinordertobeabletoreflectonyourplacementwhencalledupontodoso,eitherinformallyindiscussionoraspartofawrittenassessment.ForstudentsontheBThprogramme,oneofthetwopiecesofworkthatyouwilldoforBTh52mustrelatetoyourSCP.StudentsontheCommonAwards(undergraduate,graduateandpostgraduate)programmesmayalsoberequiredtowriteareflectionbasedonyourSCP:thiswillbemadeclearinthemoduleguideoftherelevantmodule.IfyouareontheTriposprogramme,youarelikelytorefertoyourSCPininformaltheologicalreflections,andmayuseanexperiencefromyourSCPaspartofyourthirdyearprogramme.PleasedocheckwithyourDirectorofPastoralStudiesifyouareunsureaboutthis.

Yourpreviousexperience:moreoftenthannotitisgoodtochoosesomethingthatyouhaveneverbeeninvolvedinbefore,eitherformallyaspartofyourprofessionalwork,orinformallythroughfamilyorothercircumstances.
