Learning to Change the World

Social enterprise schoolsInnovated in partnership with the Scottish Government, Social Enterprise Schools enables every young person to step up, realise their potential, and create the change they want to see in the world. Now in its 15th year, this fully-funded programme delivers transformational learning by engaging young people in the real life experience of running their own viable business while making a positive impact in their communities.

A business with a purposeOur pupil-led programme supports young people to identify the environmental or social issue they want to solve and inspires them to establish a business to make that change happen.

Guided by the values of compassion, inclusion and participation, young people of all ages and abilities set-up and run a social enterprise. Engaging in practical experiences that develop successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors. Young people build confidence and wellbeing; establish effective personal, learning and entrepreneurial skills; and nurture their lifelong sense of social justice.

The Programme deliversLying at the heart of Social Enterprise Schools, our key principles below outline the benefits and positive impacts of social enterprise for young people, their teachers, schools and their communities.

WHAT IS A SOCIAL ENTERPRISE?

A social enterprise is a dynamic business with a social purpose that invests its’ profits for community benefit.

Social entrepreneurs across the world are co-creating and designing solutions to some of our big social issues, from energy affordability and food sustainability to climate change and public health.

Here are some well known examples of social enterprises:

There are currently over 6,025 Social Enterprises operating in Scotland, employing 88,813 full-time equivalent employees (Census 2019, Social Enterprise in Scotland).

We believe in the power of learning and development to transform people of all ages to be agents of change

Get inspired with our broad introduction to social enterprise. Delivered using a variety of resources available to you. Speak to your local Education Manager for more information and about going forward for one of our Awards.

Our facilitators deliver an inspiring workshop to support young people to identify positive changes they would like to make. We offer ongoing support to help them set up their own school based social enterprise. Their social enterprise can then be nominated for a Social Enterprise in Education Award.

Having already set up a social enterprise, young people can work towards their school’s Champion Award. Whether it is reaching out to community, developing your trading activity or measuring social impact, this recognises schools who have gone the extra mile.

We know that every school is different and we tailor what we do to support schools on their social enterprise journey. Depending on previous knowledge and experience, there will be an option that suits you best.

This resource pack provides a useful induction into entrepreneurship because it starts with the young people’s concerns – whether this is

bullying in school, road accidents, or global climate change – and then motivates them to find entrepreneurial solutions, showing

them that they can be agents of change wherever they are.
