JOURNALISM and the younger genera-tion make a potent combination inthis day and age. Social media has

ingle-handedly revolutionised the waynews is created, read and shared; anddriving this paradigm shift is Gen Y.

We have everything from breakingnews on Twitter to websites like Buzzfeedhat are actually hiring proper journalists

now, said Ling Low, editor-in-chief ofnline magazine Poskod.MY, of how

Buzzfeed can even flourish solely based onreating content driven by virality. I real-y think the Internets impact on journal-sm has been a game-changer.

Indeed, a new era of journalism hasrrived and those new to the industry

must adapt quickly or risk falling behind.Truth be told, balancing between tradi-ional and new age media methods is a

daunting prospect for those only schooledn the modern ways of the world.

Thankfully, Poskod.MY will be repro-ducing Poskod Journalism Campus this

ear for The Cooler Lumpur Festival fromune 20-22 to help with that.

Featuring a new range of interactivealks, workshops and panel discussions,

he Campus will seek to generate dia-ogues and provide insight into todaysast-moving world of journalism.

R.AGEwill be playing its part at theCampus by sponsoring and moderatinghe Journalism for Gen Y panel discus-ion, where we will be drawing from our

work in social media journalism whichhas won us (ahem) several local and inter-national awards (#shamelessplug).

This couldnt come at a better time, specially with a new breed of journalistsntering the fray, according to Low.

Journalists today have to be aware thatts not just about what youre writing on,

but how people read it too, sheexplained.

A lot of people are sharing and reactingto news on Facebook, and inevitably, thatstarts to shape the way people write head-lines, for example.

And these are some of the deliberationsthe panel discussion will aim to tackle, including how social media like Twitterand Instagram can be used effectively, while retaining the use of traditional toolsof the trade.

Journalism for Gen Y will see leadingeditors and journalists of varying levels ofexperience and expertise taking the stageto share their know how in this watershedera of journalism.

As the icing on the cake, the panel willbe moderated by our very own R.AGEedi-

tor, Ian Yee.Ian and I have a similar vision to help

nurture the next generation of journalistsby providing training and workshops, which R.AGEalso does through initiativeslike BRATS, for example, Low revealed.

We recognise that journalism isntsomething that will improve by itself, andthat we need to put in the time andresources to help people raise the stand-ard of Malaysian journalism.
