INTERVIEW TALKING POINTSThe main goal is to convey the impact/meaning of what Armed Forces Entertainment does for our military members and their families stationed overseas and the impact performing overseas for the troops has on our touring artists.

The following, brief talking points serve as a basis for any media interview that takes place pre-, during- or post-tour.

Acknowledgment to Armed Forces Entertainment for putting on the show.

Huge gratitude for the sacrifices our military personnel and their families make.

Armed Forces Entertainment provides a unique experience to those stationed overseas and gives me [the artist] the opportunity to connect, share or give back.

Hoping to offer service members a break from their lives and a moment to really let loose and enjoy themselves.

Please speak to what it means to be performing for the military audiences.

If interview takes place after a tour, please speak to your most meaningful/memorable interactions with a service member or dependent that took place while on tour.

Additionally, please feel free to share any meaningful experiences or insights outside of performing that were extraordinary or special—this can be anything from learning what it’s like to live on a military installation, any offsite tourist-type experiences, any cultural or travel insights, etc.

TOUR ANNOUNCEMENT SOCIAL VIDEOS

The intention is for tour announcement videos to serve as an informal, fun “shout out” that will get our audiences excited about the upcoming tour or event. Videos should be brief, lasting anywhere from :30 to 1:00 and will be shared via Armed Forces Entertainment’s social channels including: armedforcesentertainment.com, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or YouTube.

Please note, this messaging guidance is not intended to be a script. When filming a tour announcement video, the more authentic (and relaxed), the better. Please use this as a general guide.

No professional production is required, a phone-shot video will work perfectly. Once the video has been sent to your AFE point of contact, our production team will edit and package the video to include AFE branding before posting. At that point, please feel free to share via your social platforms but be sure to tag AFE. You can find our social media handles and hashtags listed on page 9.

Some messaging samples are included below for guidance but in the links below you will see something along the lines of: “I’m heading your way, get ready! Can’t wait to see you!”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_QuV5hPcj4

We highly encourage artist(s) to insert their own personality and flair. Fun and playful seems to do the best for these videos. We welcome creativity! Also, if there are any personal ties to the military, those are great to include.

Whether it’s a comedy tour (bring on the jokes) or a musical tour (maybe a note or two of one of their songs) or even a sports or fitness tour (maybe an example of what type of training techniques they’ll be sharing), we’d love to give audiences a tiny taste of what can be expected of the performances.

Sample Messaging

The key messaging points which should always be included are:

Quick intro (can include any personal ties to the military)

Mention of the geographical region being visited and show date/range for all tours except for Southwest Asia (SWA) tours—prior to the tour, you may not promote specific locations of your tour and must use general dates rather than specifics of when you are there. During a tour to SWA, you may not mention where you are in any live interviews or on social media. You can only mention where you have been.

Message of gratitude or excitement to be visiting U.S. military members overseas

Direct viewers to the AFE website, armedforcesentertainment.com, for more information

Below are a few examples of messaging, each for a different genre of tour:

U.S. Olympic Gymnasts Tour

Hey, this is Olympic gold medalist Laurie Hernandez and this May, I’ll be joined by my friends Jordyn Wieber and Desiree Sanchez, on Armed Forces Entertainment’s U.S. Olympic Gymnasts tour!

Starting May 16th, we’re bringing our skills off the mat and straight to you. We’ll be making our way throughout Spain and Italy, on our way to visit YOU—our U. S. military members.

We hope all the Olympics and gymnastics enthusiasts will come out and visit us and train with us.

We’re very excited to share some inside tips and training techniques. (Please explain what the Olympic Gymnasts Tour is and what clinics will entail)…

It’s our honor and privilege to spend time with our U.S. military men and women so, we can’t wait to see you! (This can be personalized to speak to any military ties)

For more information on where and when we’ll be holding our gymnastics clinics, please check out armedforcesentertainment.com.”

SOCIAL VIDEOS SHOT WHILE ON TOUR

Social videos are typically shot after a performance (or can be staged to appear so) and they serve as a fun way to say a quick “Thank you!” to the current location and “We’re heading your way!” to build anticipation about the following/upcoming performance at the next location.

The videos are typically between :30 to 1:00 and will be shared “real-time” via Armed Forces Entertainment’s social channels including: armedforcesentertainment.com, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or YouTube.

Please note, this messaging guidance is not intended to be a script. When filming a tour announcement video, the more authentic (and relaxed), the better. Please use this as a general guide.

Whether filmed by an AFE videographer or self-filmed by a touring artist(s) (phone-shot videos will work), we highly encourage artists to insert their own personality and flair. Fun and playful seems to do the best for these videos. We welcome creativity! Any personal sentiments and messages are great to include.

For filming guidance and requirements, please review the Visual Content Guide (on page 10).

A messaging example and video link are included below for guidance.

Sample Messaging

Below is an example of messaging for this type of video. The key messaging points that

should always be included are:

Quick intro >>artists or group name

“Thank you” message to the current installation being visited

Message of gratitude or excitement to be visiting U.S. military members overseas

If requested by AFE’s marketing team, include a “heads up” to the next location, which must be mentioned by name.

Artist/Group

Hey everyone, we just got done here at [current location/installation name] and it was such an amazing show, the energy was out of control! It was an honor to

perform for you, thank you guys for all you do!”

“[Next location/installation name], we’re heading your way…are you ready?! We can’t wait to see you there! Be sure to make it out to the show and check out armedforcesentertainment.com for more information.”

Live Social Videos

We also encourage touring artists to go live on both Facebook and Instagram during performances and any interactions with troops. This gives the social audience a behind-the-scenes look at the AFE Tour experience. These live videos can be shot from the audience perspective or offstage. Announcing that you will be live beforehand is also encouraged so your fans know to tune in.

Live Video Examples:

Shoot live from the audience during a performance.

Shoot live from side stage during a performance.

Shoot talent interacting live with troops during meet-and-greets.

Artists can shoot personally during show.

VISUAL CONTENT GUIDE

Photo Best Practices

• Make sure the subject of the photo is easy to see. Be mindful of lighting that is too dark or too bright.

• Make sure the photo is focused on the subject and not blurry.

Video Best Practices

• Make sure the camera is steady and not shaky when filming.

• When shooting an interview style video, ask the subject to start video by saying and

spelling out their name, as well as their rank/title for military personnel, on camera

before they start to answer questions or tell their story.

• For live video, have a plan before you start and ensure you won’t be catching any

inappropriate footage on camera. There is NO editing on live video!

• For most video, shoot in landscape mode (wider than it is tall, phone turned on its side).

The exception to this is for mobile-only platforms that must be shot in portrait mode,

such as Instagram Stories.
