-1- 7.0 Instagram 7.1 Introduction Instagram has developed into one of the most effective brand-building tools of our time, noted as “the single most important social network” among American teens (LePage, 2015). Having a strong Instagram presence can greatly promote your business through creative and innovative ways that reach a broad audience. According to Elliot (2015), Instagram is the most effective social network in delivering client engagement, with a per-follower engagement rate of 2.26% for top brands. In other words, Instagram delivered these top brands 10 times more per-follower engagement than Facebook, and 83 times more engagement than Twitter (Elliot, 2015). 7.1.1 Developing an Instagram Strategy Clearly, Instagram has become a power player in the social networking game, and taking advantage of the branding opportunities it has to offer can prove to be a worthwhile endeavor for any business. So, now we get to the question of how to best approach Instagram to help promote and expand your business. While different businesses each have unique ways of engaging with their followers, there are some general guidelines to follow. In creating your Instagram strategy, LePage (2015) suggests establishing a set of goals that may include: Increasing product sales Increasing consumer traffic to your company website Increasing brand awareness Once you have identified which goals are most important to the vitality of your business, develop a mission statement that will guide you in accomplishing these goals (LePage, 2015). A mission statement for your business may be: “We will use Instagram to increase brand awareness in order to boost sales within our younger clientele base.” Having laid the foundation of your strategy, you can now focus on the technicalities, such as figuring out how often to post, what time of day to post, and which general themes you want to establish (LePage, 2015). It is important to remember that as a business, you do not want to be obtrusive in your postings. Bombarding your followers with multiple posts a day may cause you to lose followers, ultimately damaging your company image. We recommend that you post no more than 3 times a day. Posting 4-5 times throughout the week would maintain a regular posting schedule that does not overly intrude in your followers’ news feed. In regards to when you should post, this mostly depends on your audience (LePage, 2015). If you are trying to reach the younger student population of UC Santa Barbara, for example, ideal posting times may be around noon when
