Yay, Stats Are Fun!

Gen Y now outnumbers baby boomers; 96% of Gen Y'ers use Social Media.

Most 15-24 year old Canadians report that they use Facebook daily.

If Facebook was a country, it would be the 4th largest.

The fastest growing demographic on Twitter is 15-24 (they're finally catching up with the 35-44 group)

Apple is the world's most valuable company; sold 3 million iPads in the first 3 months on sale.

13% of US adults signed up for Google+ ... in the first 5 weeks, passing Twitter and LinkedIn.

By 2013, more Internet traffic will happen on mobile devices than computers.

80% of Twitter usage is on mobile devices.

Social Media has played a key role in 7 revolutions.

After the Iranian election, the U.S. State Department asked Twitter to delay their scheduled maintenance, so Iranian protest organizers would not have any downtime.

Baby Facebook was born in the aftermath of the Egyptian social media overthrow of their longstanding dictator.

Largest search engine is Google; YouTube is the 2nd largest.

Flickr is now the 2nd most popular photo sharing site online, after Facebook.

Why People Use Social Media

It's social. And so are people. The user interface is simple, and connecting is easy.Social Media offers a great platform for other stuff: games, news, entertainment, education.Social Media is fundamentally changing the way people find, use and share information.

Why Business Wants In...

To make money, of course. To connect with customers, get the word out, and grow their business.Social Media personalizes relationships, and has the potential to enhance (or destroy) brand loyalty.Social Media is fundamentally changing the way businesses reach customers.

What Business Doesn't Get

Social Media is NOT advertising. It's about fostering relationships. It's very difficult to measure Social Media ROI.Forget the rules about radio, television and newspaper. Frequency of message is not going to work on this medium.Think of Social Media like the new Telephone.

The Next New Thing?

The Internet has always been a place where people connect!

Six Essential Tools

Twitter is an amazingly powerful tool to expand your network. Zero barrier to entry. Instant viral capabilities. Amazing source for breaking news, like the #elxn41 or #canucks. A very personal approach tends to work better for companies.Flickr is YouTube for photographs. Create or join groups around specific topics and interests.Share your videos. Create a channel on YouTube. Embed video from here onto the front page of your website/blog. Use the friend feature!Your blog is YOUR Social Media. If you put it on your own website, then you own it and control it. It allows you to put your messages out the way you want them to go out. And elaborate beyond what Twitter, LinkedIn or Facebook might allow.Facebook is where people go to connect with their friends, and contains amazing opportunities to waste lots of time. Successful business pages are engaging, building a sense of community.LinkedIn is a place to build your business network. Joining and operating groups is interesting, and sometimes very valuable. Company pages list current and past employees of organizations. One account per network
