Check the story of chief Kariuki in Lanet Umoia, 100 miles from Nairobi. He says even the thieves in his village follow him.

Social Media would not apply in Africa?

Kariuki's official Twitter page shows 300 followers, but the former teacher estimated that thousands of the 28,000 residents in his area receive the messages he sends out directly and indirectly.

He said many of his constituents, mostly subsistence farmers, cannot afford to buy smart phones, but can access tweets through a third-party mobile phone application. Others forward the tweets via text message.

BribespotBribespot.comBribespot is an app that allows you to see how much corruption is going on around. Using your smartphone (or a website) you can report locations where bribes are requested/paid, indicate the size of a bribe and area of government affected by it. By accumulating data from thousands of anonymous users, we turn isolated users into powerful movement against corrupt individuals and institutions.

Responses to the polls are instantly visualized in the radio studio so talk-show hosts can discuss the data with their guests and give feedback to listeners on what is happening on the ground.

Water for peoplehttp://watermapmonitordev.appspot.com/Millions of dollars are wasted every year on tens of thousands of water systems around the world that break, become abandoned and prove to be unsustainable. Using Android cell phones, combined with GPS and Google Earth software, FLOW gives community members, partners, volunteers, and others the ability to record data: location, service status, images, and other information. This data is then displayed online to signal whether a project is up and running, broken, or on the verge of disrepair and requiring maintenance.
