What is a hashtag? A hashtag is a word or a phrase

prefixed with the “#” symbol. Hashtags group messages and discussions allowing users to search for a hashtag and get the set of messages that contain it.

Social media services like Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest, and more recently Google+, use hashtags to help users engage in a larger discussion.

Facebook users can now use hashtags to see a feed of what other people and Pages are saying about that event or topic.

Privacy concerns When Facebook announced that it would begin using hashtags, many users

expressed concerns over how this would affect their privacy settings. Most Facebook users were concerned that if they used a hashtag, then their posts

would be visible to all of those individuals searching for that specific hashtag. According to Facebook, Facebook privacy settings still override every other action

users make on Facebook. So if a Facebook user places a hashtag in a status, and they maintain privacy settings that restrict content to only friends, then only the friends of that specific user will see the hashtag in a search.

What hashtags mean for users and Pages Hashtags on Facebook allow users to

search for a specific hashtag in the search bar, click on hashtags that originate on other services and compose posts directly from the hashtag feed and search results.

According to Facebook, “hashtags are just the first step to help people more easily discover what others are saying about a specific topic and participate in public conversations.”

For users, hashtags mean getting involved in more conversations. For Pages, hashtags give administrators the ability to reach people outside of those who already “like” the Page. This generates Page growth and expands reach.

Tips for using hashtags on Facebook Regardless of the platform, using hashtags

effectively means listening to the conversation and watching for trending topics.

When you join a conversation, make sure to use the hashtag to ensure your post will be seen by everyone following that topic.

When you create a hashtag, make sure you search for it before posting to make sure it’s not being used differently than you had planned.

Keep your hashtags simple and self explanatory. Avoid confusing acronyms.

Hashtags provide the opportunity to expand your Page’s audience, so make sure you use them correctly.
