*What is social-realism?

*It is the creation of a film of which is based in settings that are realistic of which are focused on issues that exist in the society thus bringing meaning to the genre ‘social-realism’. It is more common in the British film industry and even more so in the independent film industry.

*Typically Social-realism films tend to have location shooting as opposed to filming in a studio, with less known actors and a small production budget/value. There is typically no special effects or any CGI and usually the sound is diegetic.

*The film will often focus more on the social issues of which are common and narrative themes. Examples of these social issues are often alcoholism, abuse, mental illness, sickness etc. There’s usually an emphasis on the working class of the characters in the film, and their daily life.

*Another constant convention is that they often have a lot of strong language to show the passion and depth of the films. But also to show the realism because everyone swears when they’re angry. They’re often limited however, in their distribution due to the lack of funds to be able to put in cinema’s other than the few independent ones.
