STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

To what extent do youths in the area heroes circle, between 13-18 engage in the consumption of alcohol and how can we implement measure to reduce the problem?

I. Did the consumption of alcohol affect the behavior of students?II. What factors encourage youths 12-18 to engage in the consumption of alcohol?III what implementations can be put in place to reduce consumption of alcohol?

REASON FOR SELECTING THIS AREA OF RESEARCH.

With each generation of youths that pass by we increasingly see children doing more and more adult like activities .One which has been dominating the table now is the consumption of alcohol. As a fifth form student of a prominent high school, I often hear my peers talk about liquor and the effects it has had on them .i have found this topping interesting at not only are youths drinking alcohol but they are also taking much more than they can handle .i am not only interested in the extent to which alcohol is consumed but also the measures I can take to lessen the intake of alcohol in our youths.

METHOD OF RESEARCH

In order to collect data, a questionnaire was used to obtain the most accurate responses. A questionnaire has a number of advantages. It takes little time to be completed Total confidentiality of individuals are guaranteed It is convenient of the persons required to fill out

The forty (40) questionnaires consisted of fifteen (15) questions .the questions were carried out in complete confidentiality and answers only required a tick or short answer question.

PROCEDURE FOR COLLECTING DATA

It wouldve been quite difficult if not impossible to collect answers from every high schools students between the ages 13 and 18.Hence I focused on two prominent high school,Wolmers high school for boys and Wolmers high school for girls, which when combined consisted of about 3000 students, from which I estimated that only 15 responses from each student would be accurate enough. Thus ,I have randomly selected thirty students to answer the questionnaires

PRESENTATION OF DATA

Figure 1Fig 1: age students started consuming alcohol

Figure 1 shows the ages at which youths began to start consuming alcohol. It can be seen that an overwhelming sixty percent of students started consuming between the ages of 14-16.five percent at under thirteen, fifteen percent at 17-18 and twelve percent have never consumed alcohol.

Figure 2Fig 2: reasons individuals began drinking Fig 2 indicates that majority of individuals (45%) started consuming alcohol as a result of peer pressure. Thirty percent did it on their own free will, ten percent started as a result of stress and another five percent started consuming alcohol for other reason.

Figure 3Fig 3: shows that seventy percent (70%) of students drink alcohol when attending parties. ten percent (10%) when having domestic problems and twenty percent (20%) when stressed.

Figure 4Fig 4: indicates that the consumption of alcohol most times (43%) affects the behavior of students, others submitted that consumption of alcohol rarely (20%) affected their behavior and fifteen percent said it didnt affect them at all .

Figure 5Fig 4 : shows that a tremendous seventy percent (70%) of students were not willing to avoid drinking alcohol while a scarce twenty percent (20%) were willing to avoid drinking alcohol.

ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION.

It was collected that sixty percent of students from wolmers high school for girls and boys consume alcohol at the ages 14-16 and twelve percent never consume alcohol. Based on the data collected it can be said that majority of students (40%) were influenced by peer pressure to drink alcohol whilst 10 of the students (30%) drunk under their own free will. One can also see from the data collected that alcohol was mostly consumed at parties /social events. It can also be said that based on the results the consumption of alcohol had a negative effect on majority(43%) of individuals who consumed it . Data collected shows that six of the thirty students are willing to stop drinking alcohol whilst a whopping seventy percent were not willing to change their alcoholic habits despite the fact that it affects their behavior negatively.

PRESENTATION OF FINDINGS Students the ages of 14-16 consumed alcohol the most. Majority of the students who consumed alcohol did so as a result of peer pressure.

Majority of students who consumed alcohol was affected with a negative behavior as a result of the beverage .meaning they got drunk and lost self control.

Many students are not willing to stop drinking despite the effects .

RECCOMMENDATIONS

Parents should make a better effort to educate children on the consequences of drinking alcohol and parents should ensure that their child doesnt attend parties or social events that encourage under aged drinking ,

Parents should control the amount of parties their child attends and adults who host alcohol present events should encourage children to refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages.

The government should ensure that parties have strict security enhancements for under aged drinking and implement penalties for briefing the rules and regulations.
