A floodplain is plain that has been flooded. A landform is land that is in

a different form. A delta is a narrow stream. Erosion is when a river

slowly wears down a landform.

Essential Question How do forces of the Earth cause

geographic changes?

How do forces of the earth cause geographic changes?

Turn to page 20 in your textbook. Together we will read pages 20-23.

Do Now- 10-5-11

Take out your fact sheet from the video we watched in class yesterday.

Get with a partner other than the person sitting next to you and exchange your facts with them.

A. Plate TectonicsThe theory that earth’s surface is divided into

several major, slow-moving plates or pieces. 1. Layers of the Earth- Like an Apple or a Peach

a. Crust- 10-25 Miles Thickb. Mantle 1,800 Miles Thick- hot rock like materialc. Outer Core- molten or melted d. Inner Core solid

2. Pangaeaa. The name given to Earth’s landmasses when it formed one

huge supercontinent.

3. Continental Drift Theorya. Forces within earth caused Pangaea to break apart into

continental plates and drift apart.

4. Mountain formation a. tectonic plates push togetherb. two plates collide and one moves up over the other

B. Earthquakes

1. Plates shake causing an earthquake

2. A fault is a break in Earth’s crust where movement occurs.

C. Volcanoes

1. Plates push against each other creating cracks in the crust onto Earth’s surface.

2. Heat within the mantle causes rock in the lower plate to melt. This molten rock is magma.

3. Lava is the name for magma that has escaped onto the surface.

D. WeatheringThe process of breaking up rocks into smaller pieces called

sediments.

D. WeatheringThe process of breaking up rocks into smaller pieces called sediments.

1. Water * Gravity2. Wind * Plants3. Temperature4. Erosion- process of moving

sediments.5. Deposition- process of dropping

sediments in a new location

E. Humans

1. Build farms and cities2. reshape waterways 3. create new waterways (lakes etc)4. Build dams5. drain water and direct water to

areas of need. (irrigation systems)

Ticket Out the Door

Name three forces of the Earth that cause geographic changes. Explain how each force changes the earth.

Page 17: Social Studies Lesson 1 Earth’s Landforms. Write a paragraph using the words below. You may not use your book. landformsplate tectonics continental drift

Answer the Essential Question

How do forces of the earth cause geographic changes?

There are many forces that change what the

Earth looks like. (Explain how each one works.)
