• Publicly labelling, categorising and sharing resources online- e.g. Twitter hashtagging

• Assemblage of tags creates a ‘Folksonomy’-comes from the words ‘folk’ & ‘taxonomy’

• This allows users to shape (intentionally or unintentionally) the audiences they connect with by their choice of certain words or tags

Spontaneous communities of interest

Emergence of Twitter has allowed for spontaneous communities of interest to form

Trending topics filtered using unique hashtags categorise major events which leads to the creation of communities

This sharing and publicising of private information such as team preferences in sport or favourite websites brings with it major opportunities for marketers

Disadvantages of Social Media

Can lead to intrusion of users’ lives due to the constant need for information

Ease of posting information can make it difficult to separate the difference between fiction and fact

Impacts on face to face communication due to the constant distraction of people checking for updates on Facebook, Twitter etc. and ignoring the person in front of them

Future Trends

Sites such as Delicious.com must integrate seamlessly with applications like Twitter and Facebook to survive

Twitter’s IPO will put it under pressure to balance the need to ramp up advertising to satisfy investors with the need to keep users happy

TV executives and event organisers will tap into the opportunities afforded by the growth in spontaneous communities of interest
