THE HAVARD CHAPEL AND RORKES DRIFT COLOURS WITHIN BRECON

CATHEDRAL IN THE DIOCESE OF SWANSEA AND BRECON

The NADFAS Record of the Havard Chapel Furnishings 2015 by the Brecknock Group, commenced in 2012 during the officialdom of the Dean, The Very Reverend Geoffrey Marshall.

Brecon Cathedral started life in 1093 as the Benedictine Priory of St John the Evangelist, built by the Normans on the site of an earlier Celtic church. At the dissolution of the monasteries in 1537 it became Brecon's Parish Church. It became a Cathedral only in 1923, on the establishment of the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon. The Cathedral is at the heart of a Diocese which stretches from Beguildy in the North to the Gower Peninsula in the South, including the City of Swansea and most of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

The Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Diocese and offers a ministry of worship and welcome to all who visit. Although a building of relatively modest proportions, the Cathedral is set in a walled Close, unique in Wales. The remains of the former monastic buildings today provide the administrative centre for the Diocese as well as housing for the Cathedral clergy and a Heritage Centre and Restaurant. This remarkable collection of buildings is the finest of its kind in Wales.

The chapel was formerly the Lady Chapel of the Priory Church and was known for centuries as the Vicar’s Chapel. Its restoration was carried out under the supervision of a celebrated church architect, Sir Charles Nicholson, Bart. A screen which shut it off from the body of the cathedral was removed, and three windows in the north wall were filled with stained glass, the central one of three lights depicting St Joan of Arc, St Martin of Tours (the militant bishop), and St Edmund, King and Martyr, while the others of two lights each show St George and St David, St Patrick and St Andrew.

The new furnishings of the chapel include a number of special gifts, and are both beautiful

and costly. The oak framework of the altar is copied from an Old English model, and has

walnut side panels. The silk frontal, in panels of green and white, the Regimental Colours,

relieved by blue and gold, was the work of ladies of the Regiment, and a valuable old oil

painting, 'The Baptism of our Lord', given for the purpose, hangs over the altar.

There is a Roll of Honour commemorating all those who died in the two World Wars and

other members of the two Regiments have personal memorial plaques on the backs of the

pews. The Colours of antecedent Regiments have been laid up over the years and hang from

the Chapel walls and of particular interest are the Colours of 1st Battalion the 24th Regiment

of Foot which served with such distinction during the Zulu War of 1879. Given their unique

nature, these Colours have been preserved for posterity in purpose built Perspex cases.
