Naomi Lindstrom !It is with great sadness that we announce that Naomi Lindstrom has passed away. Naomi, a Canadian by birth, was among the first Flight Attendants for Pan American Airlines. While all the other girls would be lounging at the pool or the beach in exotic locations, Naomi would be out scrounging in the bazaars and antique shops all over Asia. She was a devoted lover and collector of Asian Art, an authority on decorative beads, and a dedicated member of the Asian Art Museum family who served as Museum Docent and was on the Board of the Society for Asian Art for many years. She was generous in sharing her knowledge and showing her collection to countless groups over the years, as well as using pieces from it for SAA's various events. Her many friends will sorely miss her.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

LITERATURE AND CULTURE OF ASIA

Although I have had the pleasure of getting to know many of you through the Society’s programs, as well as at the Asian Art Museum, it is an honor to introduce myself in my new role as President and extend my warmest greetings to the entire SAA family. I am humbled and truly grateful for the opportunity to lead this esteemed organization, which has thrived for more than half a century thanks to exceptionally dedicated and generous members. !As we begin another year, I hope you will join me in welcoming four new Board members: Annie Dorsey, Jennifer Kao, Kristl Lee, and Peter Sinton. I am looking forward to working with such a talented group, and I encourage program participants to speak to any one of us at upcoming events. Your thoughts and ideas are invaluable as we plan for the future of SAA. Additionally, I wish to acknowledge the important contributions of our former President, Phyllis Kempner, and all the outgoing Board of Directors: Ed Baer, Don Meyer, Eileen Bitten, and Coral Reiff. !My foremost priority is to uphold the Society’s legacy of outstanding and innovative programs. For the first time this fall, Islamic art will be the focus of our renowned Arts of Asia Lecture Series. I am also thrilled to announce our first travel program to the Arabian Gulf, along with trips to Korea, Dallas and Boston. Other programs include the ever popular SOUK, as well as a range of academic and social events held in conjunction with the museum’s Gorgeous and Roads of Arabia exhibitions. !Aside from planning exciting programs, the Board of Directors will resume our examination of best practices in organizational governance. Furthermore, the Finance Committee will continue its prudent management of our endowment and unrestricted funds to ensure that the Society can help support the museum’s educational endeavors for many years to come. !Having long been a part of the Society’s unparalleled community of Asian art scholars and enthusiasts, I believe I have good reason to be optimistic about our future and cannot wait to get to work – see you at the Museum! !Sincerely, Linda Shen Lei

Pre-Islamic Iranian Religions With Mitra Ara !When: Friday, August 15 Time: 10:30 am - 12:00 noon Place: Samsung Hall Fee: $15 Society members, $20 non-members (after Museum admission) !As an important feature of the history of religious traditions, the history of Iranian religious beliefs and its influences are presented from pre-historic times to the advent of Islam. Included are Zoroastrianism, Mithraism, Manicheism, and Mazdakism. Highlighted will be the trajectory of some universal concepts first introduced in Iranian religious thought and its genetic and historical relations with other major religions of the world. This lecture will be a good pre-cursor to the Arts of Asia Fall Series on Arts of the Islamic World. !Dr. Mitra Ara is Professor and Founding Director of the Persian Studies Program at San Francisco State University. She received her BA, MA, and PhD from UC Berkeley in the fields of Religious and South Asian Studies and Religions of West Asia. There will be no July 2014 First Thursday presentation due to an unexpected requirement that the presenter be out of the country. We wish all First Thursday participants a very happy holiday. !A Week by the Lakeside of the Goddess of Ghee With Suzanne Klotz !When: Thursday, August 21 (note this is the second Thursday) Time: 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm Place: Education Studios Fee: $10 (after Museum admission) !For one week every June, on the cusp of the summer monsoons, villagers throng a small alpine lake in the western Indian Himalayas. They plunge into its icy waters and circumambulate its perimeter neck deep. They are paying homage to the Budhi Nagin, or old female snake goddess, who lives in its watery depths. The Budhi Nagin is also celebrated as the “Goddess of Ghee” for the staggering quantities of this delicious buttery substance that play a central role in her sacred rites. In June 2013 Suzanne Klotz, our presenter, spent a week by the lakeside of the Goddess of Ghee and captured these rituals in video footage that she will share during this talk. Come and peer into a shrinking world of Himalayan folk goddesses who continue to be worshipped in time-honored ways. !Suzanne Klotz has travelled extensively by foot in the northwestern Indian Himalayas. Since 1991 she has made eighteen trips to remote areas of the mountainous states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh where she has studied and documented the village and tribal cultures. She has lectured at many venues in the San Francisco Bay Area and has published a number of articles.

THE SOCIETY FOR ASIAN ART PRESENTS Through the Mihrab: Exploring Islamic Art and Architecture, Past and Present

Dubai, Doha, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Oman with scholar,

Bruce Wannell, March 13 to 27, 2015

Most known for their abundance of oil, the Gulf States also have a remarkable cultural and artistic heritage. They are home to

architectural masterpieces, past and present, fascinating archaeological and historical sites, as well as world-class museums which

display magnificent collections of ancient Islamic painting, calligraphy, pottery, embroidery, and jewelry.

In addition to visiting these architectural, archaeological, and historical sites and museums, we also will visit private art collections and

art galleries and will be VIP guests at Art Dubai, a prestigious International Contemporary Art Fair. In Dubai (United Arab Emirates),

experience a guided architectural walking tour, participate in Art Dubai activities and visit private art collections. Fly to Doha, Qatar,

and visit the Museum of Islamic Arts (MIA), welcomed by the Museum Director. Explore the Old Souk (market) through its maze of

alleyways and dine aboard a traditional Arab dhow. In Abu Dhabi, capital of the UAE, marvel at the unique contemporary architecture,

an intriguing interpretation of Islamic designs crafted in modern materials. Meet with the Director of the Saadiyat Island Story

Exhibition. In Sharjah and Al Ain, visit art collections, meet local residents and explore impressive buildings and ruins.

Situated on the Arabian Peninsula, Oman is a blend of the new and the old, as evidenced by its architecture, its attitudes, and its

customs. It is a land of majestic forts, imposing castles, and palace ruins. As we travel through the country, we will see traditional village

life, stark majestic mountain ranges, a vast expanse of desert and sandy beaches. Shopping for traditional crafts in vibrant markets offers

an opportunity to interact with local people. Scholar, Bruce Wannell, will accompany our SAA group throughout the trip, enriching our

visit to this fascinating region with his expertise, insights, and enthusiasm.
