Students undertake original research on a full- or part-time basis using a combination of qualitative or quantitative methods as part of a detailed methodology. Our programs emphasize theoretical positioning (social theory), critical thinking, fieldwork, professional writing, and high-level analysis. Come be part of the UNB community while gaining the necessary skills to obtain advanced positions with private, public, and non-profit employers. Our graduates go on to work in social services, health services, law, and academia; many have taken up tenure track university appointments and others have been awarded Canada Research Chairs. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

ASSOCIATIONS WITH RESEARCH CENTRES AT UNB

• MA applicants should hold an undergraduate major or honours degree in sociology with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 (B+). It is possible for students with a slightly lower GPA, or students with an undergraduate degree from a related social science discipline, to be considered for program entry. (In these cases, completion of additional courses may be required prior to starting the MA)• PhD applicants should hold an MA in sociology. Those without an MA in sociology but hold an MA from a related social science discipline may be considered for program entry.• All applicants are expected to submit: • Three letters of reference (at least two of which, if not all, must be from academic referees) • Official academic transcript(s) • 500 - 600 word statement indicating research interests and reason for selecting UNB • Writing sample (appropriate undergraduate paper or a thesis chapter) • Curriculum vitae• Applicants should contact a Sociology faculty member to ascertain their availability and interest in potentially becoming a supervisor.• Applicants whose first language is not English are required to submit language scores of IELTS band 7.5 or equivalent.
