    • Fragment of memories of Socrates Xenophon, translated by Agustin Garcia Calvo lll Book, Chapter XI.1

•This is one of the funniest bits of the book "Recollections of Socrates" by Xenophon,

translated by master Agustin Garcia Calvo, which is not a little, because without their

humor and subtlety would we not find the same thing in the same text, translated byothers. The conversation of Socrates with Theodota prostitute, famous for his friends Atena is a

clear example of how it should be taken the helm of education and tutoring for adults.Socrates teaches the Theodota how to behave to achieve their common goals and

immediately makes it practically, because the point is of interest to customers, make them be like babeados by our skills and after all not overwhelm or with our knowledge or with

our physical charms. What follows is something my version of the fragment, what I remember and look back

on what I read long before, and I've had to shear in archaic expressions, but the words arethe translator.

    •CHAPTER XI

    1. Athens was once a beautiful woman named Theodota. It was one of those women whoare looking to make this company the persuade. He mentioned it to Socrates, one of those

present and said that she surpassed all the words of beauty and painters came to his houseto take her portrait of him and who - said - could be seen of him was as good show.

"It would be something to go see it - Socrates said -: for, in short, hearsay is not possibleto know what is beyond words."

    2. that he had brought the relationship said. "I will not be - he said - who you delay, ifyou accompany me there"

Anyway, so put on your way, all reached home and found Theodota trance pose for a painter, and there were contemplating. Having left the painter his work, Socrates said,

"Friends, what do you think: we should rather be grateful to us Theodota because heshowed us his beauty, or rather because we have seen it?

    3. For that, they replied that Socrates was right: "Then we will see her and, for now, outof our praise benefit, and as we do get the reputation among more people will draw

greater profit.Instead we, and what we have seen and we are longing to touch desazonados we go and

when we are gone, we feel homesick. So here it is that, certainly, we are serving andworship, and worship and service she received. "

    4. But right now seeing that Socrates was richly dressed and adorned and mother besideher clothing and start dressings and not any well bred so many good figure nor

descuidads in size and, finally, the house at the other extreme start and harnessed withoutlooking at costs> n "Tell me, Theodota, - he said - do you have a farm?" "I do not have it,

no," he replied.. "Well then, a house that produces income?" "Neither house." - She said."Well, is it perhaps some workers to pay? "Nor workers." He said.

"Where, then, - he said -sacas your income?" "When anyone - the woman said - that has been my friend has done me good grace of something, those are my livelihood."

    5. "Blessed be, Theodota, - he said - truly beautiful to the hacienda, and very most preferably sheep or goats or cows have gathered a flock of friends. But hear me, - he

continued - How do you:luck forsaken the matter until it comes into your fly pose as a friend, or alternatively use

    any skill?

    6. "How - she said - I can find tricks for that?" "By my faith - said Socrates-that muchyou own in that spiders: for thouYou help them hunt what they need for life; in sum, having

a fine and subtle woven webs, which falls there, with that feed "7." And to me then. - shesaid -? I advise that weaves a trap or snare me "" Well,

not, in short, higher hunting should not be, of course, just like that estimatesthere, the hunting friends. You see that, even in a matter of so little money, those who

hunt hares use manywiles? 8. That as they come to graze at night, nocherniegos dogs seek for them

hunt them. And as they run at daybreak, other dogs that trail by following them leave the place where the grass to burrow can give them are sought; as fast as they are laid bare

still often escape the race, they are still made with other dogs very fast, so the raceapresen them; but even as they manage to escape some tend networks where escape the

maze, so giving on them you are trapped. "9. "How Good and art of those - she said - I can get to cazarL friends?" "A faith that

enough - Socrates said - with dogs instead you get someone who rastreándote the rich andfans beauty, discover and achieve, decubiertos, is Amane with them so as to push up your

networks.10. What kind of networks - she said - are what I have? "Well, for one, for now - replied

Socrates - and beautifully woven, which is your body; and in it a soul, why well you learn how you looks you liked and what you say to

give joy, and how, showing interest in you have to accept it graciously, and no morewalks than joke slam the door [nose], and when you are wrong a friend, interested in him

carefully and, when he has left something good, warmly congratulate, and who caresabout you seriously mostrártele with all your soul grateful. Certainly what it is give kisses

I know that you will know do not just gently, also with bienquerencia; and friends thatyou are to your liking and is not in words but in deeds will demonstrate it. "

"By my life - you Theodota said - that I'm not worth any of those tricks." 11. "For it is -followed Socrates - that much care approach and treat a man

naturally and as it should. Well, well, what is force, nor will you be able to catch orretained by any friend, but with care and complacency that it is to catch vermin and make

it stay with you "" Truth is that. "- She said.12. "Well, first - followed Seøcrates, - those who care about you should expect such

favors that have the least possible cost to them of them; and then you, in your turn, pay to please them in the same way. Well this is how best have to go making friends and longer

have to love you and make you have more please.13. And most will have to please them is if you make them your gift of thanks when they

    require them to you. Well, you see that also with the most pleasant meals even if the one before serving desire them, ungrateful you crave, and as you are well fed, give to disgust;

but if they are used after making into appetite, even of the most common seem very tasty."

    14. "How then - she said I could do I get one in appetite which in my've? "Well, to faith -Socrates said - whether first to those who are sick or are you tempting offer nor litter,

until he, stopping his fill, ask him again; and then if those who ask the groping a way oftreatment as gentle as possible and with what not to look like you want to grant as

avoiding, to the extent that they can not ask for more really: as much will to give at that

time the same gifts to first that wish. "Theodota 15. And said, "Well, what you're doing already, Socrates - told - you do notcome with me partner and companion hunting friends?

"Yes, I will, to faith mine - replied Socrates -. If I convince you" "How then - she said - Ican I convince" "That you yourself - said Socrates - you'll find out and you amañarás, if

for some you need me "" Well, then, - she said - come and see me often. ".16. To which Socrates, making fun of his own idleness: "Ah, but that Theodota - he said -

is not so easy and much less for me to have a free moment: because I have so manymatters private and public I They have always occupied. And I have also friends, neither

day nor night I going to let get away from them, being as they are learning from memagic potions and prayers and amulets "17." Yea, do you also. - She said - you know

that, Socrates ? "" Bah, then - why do you think - replied Socrates - Apollodorus, the onesyou see here, and Antisthenes is never away from me? and why Simias Cebete and

Thebes have been here with me? Remain sure not without many filters and spells andmagic birds of petitions and complaints guessing these things happen. "

    18. "Well, lend me - she said - your magic bird to point first against yourself.""Oh, my darling, - he said - I do not want to be the one that is to you attracted, but you're

the you come to me." "For you I'll - she replied -: just you receive me." "Yes, you receive- Socrates said - if you do not have at home a friend who wants more than you."

Carme Pinos "With a family life had not been able to work at 100%" • Its skyscrapers inMexico, university buildings or in Austria

Schools in Spain have provided further recognition of thisarchitect 60 years old. Catalan defends teamwork: "Today is an ordeal build," he says.

(Barcelona, 1954) belongs to a generation in which the architects were minority. It hastaken over a decade to regain the recognition it won in the nineties, before disbanding of

the late Enric Miralles. He signed with some of the most innovative projects to Spanishcentury. His studio is a large bourgeois apartment in Barcelona that crosses the Diagonal

Among endless corridors, high ceilings, hydraulic pavement, lots of light and a serviceelevator, 13 people work here. The conversation takes place in the library.

Has you had more lives as an architect or as a person?I do not separate. I have had many lives as architect and all are related to my existence as

a person. More than lives, are phases. All I am left with something, and that's my

foundation.Do not separate profession life has been a decision or a consequence?I did not see another option. I studied in a time when a woman was to be in the minority.

If I have children not because he did not want. Life has given me well and is one of thethings that hurt me. But I think with a family life I would not have been able to devote to

my job 100%. In order to become what I wanted I had to choose and sacrifice. I have no private life when I do not give lessons and travel. I've done my research my family and

my profession my life. Why I wanted to be an architect?

My father was a doctor, but he had much to do with art. We had a house in the country inwhich we were always doing works.

I ask him about his vocation and he answers with the profession of his father. It was avery powerful figure. He wanted my older brother was the architect. But when he said he

wanted to be a doctor, I knew it was my turn. Are they brothers?

Three. Little is agronomist. As my father wanted. Chemical wanted me, but my brotherdid not obey ...

What capacity to influence the children ... it was very old. He married my mother in 60years. So I wanted to leave everything tied. Fate was written.

What then I thought of architecture? That linked art and life. And that's what continues to interest me the responsibility that

architecture has with society. What has made him the architect who is?

I scored stages. The first, with Enric [Miralles], formed me. He was the mirror in which Ilooked. It opened my eyes.

Where I wanted to be?Feeling passionate about my work, architecture. He was very strong. It was much more

knowledgeable than I am. Everything interested him: philosophy, art ... I did see that itwas important to break the shell of architecture. Relate to the world and life. I taught this

way. With family life I would not have been able to work at 100% "

I was fio over another student teachers? It was the end of the dictatorship. In college we played at being intellectuals. I came from

a posh class many students. We were going to ski, for instance, and suddenly I find people who do not come from the privileged world but it gives us a bath intellectually.

Knowledge that fascinated me.Was it a darling when he entered college?

Well ..., spoiled, pampered ... not so much. Besides studying, my mother had made plantation had in Lleida. I spent half a week in the field of Balaguer. They called me "the

     pastoreta".

He hesitated when I asked if it was a spoiled child. He once told that her father took herto the parades of a legendary shop in Barcelona, The floating dock, to choose the models

liked. How not going to be spoiled? My father wanted me to go higher. At 13, she was dressed

in black suit. I bought clothes in the parade. But then, as he died of leukemia after a long

agony, I think it will shake. Anyway, I think people who are spoiled receives a smallfortress. But then they suffer misfortunes, have a reservoir to draw on. Someone to makeyou feel special gives you strength.

Would you spoiled over his father than his mother? My father was an Uncle mine. All children will we worship. So that sometimes my

mother was jealous. But it was her fault. He spent worshiping life. And we were caught. He did a great job. Well yes. So to get to the School of Architecture I found what I

always say, right? That you fall for the figure you've been in love with small: large, powerful, seductive ... That was my father and that was Enric Miralles, who also adored

    worldwide.Got infected?

Working and living with him gave me strength, but also insecurity. I emptied, but he wasthe one who appeared behind the work.

In what sense? All projects were signed together ... Yes, yes. And nothing was done if we did not agree.

But I was always in the rear. How he would prefer not to give lectures him if he did betterthan me? I felt so superfluous front of his power almost resigned myself. Many times I

say: women complain, but sometimes we are comfortable. It is also fair to admit that the other is better. It is better because you do better. No king

without subjects.Do you now subjects in his study?

We are a team. The first and last word I have, but leave room for everyone to contribute. So last many years. I do not burn, I hear.

Does he call that architecture is a team?Four eyes are better than two.

Do you try people well in an architecture means listen to them, let them make decisions, decent pay?

All that. And have them under contract. How many employees?

We are 13. When a few years ago I had a lot of work, I realized I had two choices: growor partner with engineering. And I chose the latter. Today building is an ordeal.

Why has it become so difficult?By regulations. A customer can sue you for a square centimeter less. They have to make

all drawings and reports. It has been bureaucratized profession. To control all thedifficulties are avoided.

•What you lose with this absolute forecast architecture?

Life. Before doing architecture at the site. You were incorporating ideas or solving problems. Now it has done in the study. Instead of answering, you should anticipate. We

treat everyone like criminals and we end up behaving as such.

Live now a recognition, after building two skyscrapers in Mexico and raise CaixaForumZaragoza, which has cost much to get. Why has it been so difficult? I belong to a

generation in which there were few. At school we were 4 against 200 men. There wasnow working as partners. So when we split, no one doubted that I had plenty.

Between 1991, when it separated from Miralles, 2000 and spent a decade in white. He

could not projects.Did he feel that he demanded to start over?It was a school. But I had hewed the destination.

How he managed to stay afloat?By foreign architects. Some went to Barcelona and said, "Okay, we know what makes

Miralles, but where is the Pinos?". The Austrian Wolf Prix was the most helped. I did notknow him. He came with his students. He saw the huge dark studio with only two people,

and Juan Antonio Andreu.Andreu is yet. Yes. Bring me 25 years. A Prix liked the talk he gave to his students and

invited me to lecture in Vienna. Then Thom Mayne got me invited to teach in Chicago,so I started going out.

They clothed. Yes. I was going strong.Until he won the competition for the promenade of Torrevieja. I made a name in the

Levant. I think this ride Torrevieja won won the sea. However, his great change comes when he begins to build in Mexico. I was called to

become part of a group that began erecting skyscrapers in Guadalajara. Is it only helped foreigners?

When I started out teaching one day I found Moneo in Arco. And I told. I scolded. Hetold me I was where I should be in the study.

But if he has taught at many sites! I assume he meant me not disperse. Then, when he metthe projects they had been working (no build) he told me to leave.

Also Moneo had a paternalistic relationship with you?It was the teacher who taught me to understand the architecture in capitals.

It was not Miralles? No. Enric infected me ambition. It made me realize that anything was possible. Moneo

gave me to understand what is being capitalized architect. What is?

Not content with little. No fiddling. Not accept easements market. At 20, he treated us asarchitects. And we corrected. It was not patronizing. It was a rebellious period. But the

rebellion was demonstrated buying books, informing.Applauds the political rebellion. Collides mouth of a landowner like you. Is it a bourgeois

liberal? Equal. In Catalonia there was no aristocracy. Our boom came with the industrialrevolution -developed by bourgeois who supported with their money the splendor of the

crafts. In the era of modernism, many architects were political. We built an intelligentsia. My father was a man of the nineteenth century had ambitions beyond his profession and

economic benefit. That illustrated and civic building the city going spirit collides with the current

architectural big business, which is no longer build houses for people to live, but in doingthem as a business. That is the great drama. World War II was won by the market, which

    is now exercised despot.Why?

Capitalism wants people frustrated to purchase and take pleasure in consumption. I'mdoing a house in Mexico. I charge my grandparents to live with several generations. This

is almost unthinkable here. We can not stand. Nobody wants to live as a family, and ifthey do, they kill.

    Carme Pinos

Thomas Pinós, Carme father was director of digestive diseases at the Hospital de SantPau in Barcelona. His mother, Carmen Esplat, who was 27 years younger than his father,he began to study medicine, but the Civil War interrupted. While studying architecture in

Barcelona, Carme helped his mother run the country estate they had in Balaguer (Lleida).eleven

That pushed him to conceive landscaped buildings that break the site and insert in place. The he began doing with Enric Miralles. After separating, he spent nearly a decade in

white. Until he reappeared teaching and building in Spain, Austria and Mexico. Last yearhe opened the CaixaForum building in Zaragoza. With maturity has come to the

forefront.Defend the contribution to society should do architects. Does working in a country like

Mexico changes its vision of architecture? Enjoy there because they trust me. There areso many rules and everything is easier. But I miss the liability to the city because the city

does not exist there. I have raised two towers and now I'm doing in private homes -maravillosos contexts, but never urban.

And how then emerges enjoy the responsibility that says?I do with my towers throughout the city because I can always say that making

architecture is a city. And how city becomes a skyscraper?

With difficulty. A tower is always a power play: the highest, the most beautiful, the mostslender, the most risky ... In the Mexican cities little walking. So in the Cube 2 office

towers built in Guadalajara that I gave the lobby a few walking because they arrive by bus. The problem with walking is not counted. Those who count are those arriving by car.

How can you change? The cities change if the public insists. If citizenship is silent, politicians continue.

From that point of view, how do you live the current Spanish and Catalan politicalmoment? I can hardly understand. Vindicate the culture and language because they are

memory. But if there were no borders, it would be better for everyone. Associateindependence to understand that change is not the big problem is corruption installed in

politicians. We must protest. But not only with protest votes. We must get involved.Since all professions.

Some professionals, such as doctors, have made changes after a large protest effort. While shut up, it will all the same. We believe we have the power, we are the citizens

who make the decisions. We can not vote with fear. We must vote with ambition. Whatwe have seen is sinister. The answer is not to die of fear.

Transmit fear of change is an old recipe to maintain the status quo. So scary.

Does the Islamic terror? But if in the world there are more Muslims than any other religion.

    Are they all bad?

We took the whole for the part. All the same aims: to weaken, manipulate citizens. Hewas coming. Leo's philosophy and test novel. And I read a little, I do not know much. But

I know that wars are useless. The first led to the Second, and the Second still aresuffering.

To build in Mexico has been difficult being a woman? Is the building as macho as in

Spain? No. On the contrary. It has been easy. In medieval times there was sexism, but the queendid not suffer. In Latin America I have known, from a certain machismo status

disappears. And if you arrive in Europe to build a building, you are considered and enterthat status.

He has written a monograph on his work just published by Gustavo Gili materials ofconcern that instead of aging, deteriorate. So is.

But it uses prefabricated industrial works as CaixaForum Saragossa and performed anincreasingly industrialized construction. Are we doomed to this? Yes. As a matter of

days. Traditional materials require more construction time, preparation, drying. We livein a dynamic culture that tries to do more in less time. Nobody raises architecture to go

down in history. Not even the most recognized?

The customer dials a priority: profitability. Contemporaneity is to respond to that. Ialways say that making architecture is to make city "

How is today measured the quality of the buildings? For its success, profitability. CaixaForum Zaragoza has over half a million hits in a

medium city. That is a success. The immediacy is the culture of today. The architects have often had to resist to contribute.

Already is not it?I do not know.

There have been many who have spent years and years without building and then theyhave managed to anthological works. You can not go against everything. I do not work

for commercial real estate. I did not want to get into this widespread practice amongarchitects recognized to have a list of publishable projects and others who get to eat. I am

the author of all that I do. But that does not mean that all you want to do.You do not have any project that fully meets?

My casita de Mallorca. He has spoken to acquire the confidence to express themselves without fear.

Is or was fearful?I was an extremely shy person and lack of confidence, very insecure. He saved my pride.

You may also sunk there. The mix of insecurity and pride is explosive ... my first stagemay be so. But in this second I pulled the pampering accumulated girl and I have become

    stronger.How does one become stronger?

When, instead of sinking when crushed, it is capable of self-criticism and analyze whathas gone wrong, and decide what to change to resist first and prosper later.

Does he talk about his life or his work as an architect?Of the two. The first thing that sank me in life was how little was considered me as an

architect when I was separated from my partner, but not stopped being an architect.

I knew my worth, but not transmitting. What made me grow was to find a way to provethat I was the architect who I am.

He is not never doubted herself? My friends trusted me, and when I lacked strength, took them.

    She has lots of friends?

I love people. I do large parties. But I am very lonely. I have people I love coming, but noone to call at night. Now in my little house in Mallorca I do with all the townspeople. Ihave been welcomed.

¿30 years ago I would have been able to enjoy small talk about the weather with amerchant of a people?

Same needed to absorb more, feel more time advantage. You have not returned to have a partner?

I have had many troubles. A dearer than others. Celebrate 60 years has been a very funnything. They treat me like an adult.

But it feels young. Yes. I look younger because white hair gives me more light. Thefantastic thing about getting older is that you stop justify. The pity is that many friends

are.Have you learned to live alone?

Yes. At age 60, I stopped complaining about being alone. Although until then I did nothave the courage to have a partner. I stepped feared personality.

Is it true that studied dressmaking?Yes. I've always had a passion for fashion.

Are the suits is made? Before Yes. The tests were to draw a pattern and make the dress. It is not far from what is

to be an architect. It was the best of the class. Then architecture began asking me a lotand I left.

Do you have any advice to give life?It must be assumed. One discovers when he looks out and stop navel gazing.
