Set off – something. It is sur-prisingly not far off its counter-part, which is (to arrive well). The initial meaning: The car (thebus, the train, funicular railway)has left; the specific vehicle hasmoved and is no longer where itwas just a minute ago.In nostalgic terms: “Thevery last train has notyet left“. Nowadays thisexpression can be used at manydifferent levels. It is clearly moreset off, than it was before. Music– for instance – can travel down
well and in particular for the onewhoplays or interprets it, aswellas for the one who listens to themusic. A wicked type in contrastcan also be a well travelled type,or someone who has not got theenergy to walk five steps or who
is not even in the posi-tion to really set off. Awell travelled type ofperson is in pursuance
and continuation of his activityof either being wicked or settingoff or … not obliged to hold a dri-ving license. Not yet.

To remain true to one’s principles will be rewarded
Are there secrets ofsuccess?der Standard is thestandard. This hasa double meaning:First of all we havebeen keeping trueto ourselves.Secondly: We putthe Standard to thefront and othershave to follow. This is alsohonoured by thereaders.
The ‘Presse’ has a lower reader percopy factor than the ‘Krone’newspaper.I am not claiming that they dotheir job properly.
No other newspaper has as manyreaders per copy as der Standard. How come? Our analytical quality and thequality of our commentaries, ledto the conclusion that we areperceived to be interesting wellbeyond the publication day. Itwould be rather sad if a qualitynewspaper would not have aconsiderably higher reader percopy factor, than the competingtabloid titles. If that would be thecase, we would have donesomething wrong.
What are you most pleased about?I think I have to quote three subjects: We areranked number one with academics. Our outstan-ding performance in the Federal Laenders(Counties). Finally, our international top position,in comparison to our national readership. Where do you go from here?
We carry on as we have untilnow: We shall take up the dailychallenge to produce the bestnewspaper.

Clear cut proportions in thequality segment
der Standard registered the largest lead ever over “Die Presse“
MEDIA-ANALYSE 2008 +++ LESERVORSPRUNG AUF 142.000 GEWACHSEN +++-----------------------------
A reach of 6.0 percent is not newfor der Standard, but still an out-standing result. 3.8 percent for DiePresse are in comparison to the lasthalf year of the NRS MA 07/08, theresult of which was 3.6 percent, also a good one, but also not new.
However, the level of these rat-
her low readership values of DiePresse is now on the same level asthose of the early 1990’s.
The peculiarity of this NRS MA2008/2009 is not the results inthemselves, but the ever more in-creasing distance between der
Standard and Presse.
This development is, with hind-sight, easily explained. In 1995,Andreas Unterberger took over aseditor in chief at Die Presse and ledthe publication with a strict posi-tioning in the market to true NRShigh values. In 1998 these resultswere 0.1 percent more than der
Standard (NRS/MA1998: 5.1 % DiePresse; 5.0% der Standard). der
Standard then took of course im-mediate steps to counter this deve-lopment and was able to establishagain the familiar gap (NRS/MA2001 6.0 against 5.2 percent).
Thedecline in reachatDiePressebegan when Michael Fleischhackerwas installed as deputy editor. Thevery first relaunch, for which hewas responsible, was a flop andopened the gap between der
Standard and Die Presse like scis-sors. After he took over as editor inchief in 2004 and another re-launch, the long term trend ofreadership loss continued andreached the lowest position of thetime before the Unterberger area.Whilst sharp changes of directionand partly irritating reforms (i.e.mono thematically title pages)underlined these relaunches; der
Standard, in contrast put in placequiet, not too exciting but perma-nent further developments and aclear positioning of the brand. Ourreaders have rewarded us.
KNOWLEDGE
The Austrian NRS / Media Analysis:The Media Analysis is an inde-pendent survey measuring mediaconsumption in Austria. All largemedia owners and agencies arecommonly members of thissurvey. The MA – as we call it –is the lead currency as far asmedia usage is concerned.
The very high quality of theAustrian NRS / MA is based onthe quality of the sample con-struction in combination withthe large sample size. With about16,000 interviews, the MediaAnalyse is one of the largest sur-veys of its kind in Europe. TheMA is one of the few surveysbased on address samples, whichin turn ensures that every house-hold has the same chance to beincluded in the total sample, oneof the golden rules in statistics.
The high data quality is based onthis very fact. The structure andflow model are adjusted to Euro-pean standards in print media re-search, which in turn ensuresthat the questions as to how themedia are used are very similarin all questionnaires.
The persons questioned areprovided with adequate memoryaid during a personal computer-aided interview. Logos or mast-heads of individual newspapersor magazines, for instance, willbe shown on the questionnairelap top computer. The intervie-wer will be controlled two fold bya thorough control system: First-ly, in view of the contents and se-condly, with regard to the choiceof the target persons. Some of theinterviewers also have control-
lers accompanying them; further-more, some of the target personswill have to endure a controlquestionnaire and finally all re-sults are tested for gross discre-pancies vs. other results.
The whole sample will then beadjusted and weighted on thecensus of the Austrian centralstatistical office and has finally toundergo a plausibility check.
Since the very first AustrianNRS in 1964 several methods andlarge parts of the questionnairehave been adapted but alwayswith a strict view to maintaincontinuity. These methodologi-cal and contents adjustmentswere always adopted for thewhole project, hence any effectswere neutral for all newspapersand magazines.

Was ist unser Modell? Eine Unkultur sei zwei-fellos, dass es im Top-Managementnoch immer darum gehe, mehr zuverdienen als der Vorgänger – oderbeim Personalberater zu fragen:„Wie viel verdiene ich als ...?“

der Standard
fends off a major weekendoffensive
It was probably due to the badresults in the latest full annualNRS, the MA 2008, and the worstresult in over 15 years, whichprompted the offensive by diePresse on der Standard. The goalwas the weekend.
In summary after several monthsof this material battle: The signifi-cant advantage of der Standard onweekends (MA 2008: 6.7 percentvs. 4.7 percent reach) remains de-spite the mega investments (MA2008/2009: 6.7 percent vs. 4.8 per-cent reach). Die Presse might noweven run into dangerous waters inthe medium term as there are seve-re distribution problems in Austriaon Sundays (i.e. absent post deli-veryandmissingnewsagents).The-se caused a clear downward trendin circulation in comparison to
their previous weekend edition. And also, the new Saturday editionis losing out dramatically due to the(unique in Vienna) loss of the so-called self service bags. On top ofthis, Presse on Sunday had to reportunder ABC rules as a free sheet.
This is all good news for der
Standard and also for our future:Our circulation is clearly strongerthan the news stall circulation ofDie Presse and we are actively readover a period of two full weekenddays. This clearly increases the im-pact for the advertising industry.
The clear weekendadvantage of
der Standard remains, despite the introduction of
Presse on Sunday.

We do very much hope that this iswhat you expect from a qualitynewspaper – or can we offer any-thing else? With these specialissues, we want to demonstrate thatwe can dig deep editorially.
The editor in chief, AlexandraFoederl-Schmid took this path andthe whole of der Standard’s edito-rial confirmed that the road tosuccess does not always have to beon the surface.

If one substitutes one single insertion in „Krone“ with three insertions in der Standard, one does not lose any effectiveness at all. On the contrary: It increases the netcoverage. In other words – the 581,000 impacts created by three insertions in der Standard are in effect 178,000 impacts of overlapping readers. One gains – however – 403,000 impactsin the exclusive and advertising relevant group excluded from readers of „Krone“. This schedule will be, on top of all this, upgraded by means of adding more ofder Standard’s top class readers who guarantee a broader coverage, due to their high purchasing power. (mg)

As a choice, this form can also be com-bined with an advertisementpositioned across. We recentlyhad several clients in themobile industry, who used thisfacility: „3“ and „T-Mobile“.
IKEA accompanied in August 2009their world wide presentation oftheir new catalogue with a twopage coat (a cover) in the firstbook, thus making good use ofthe outstanding awareness of a“fictitious title page“. The presentation of an enterprise in a new environment sets the precedence. The Austrian national forestry authority (OeBf) and the Austrian Science Support Society (FFG) have repeatedly andover several years used this special advertising form for their annual reports. The copy is almost identical in terms
of paper quality and size in the outer/cover part (Image part) to our RONDO magazine. The inner core part (covering numbers and facts) is printed on the usual pink Standard paper.

Each one, who hasnot yet lost his/herhead completely,
will experience it some-how. Each one, by theirown means, after one’sown fashion. There arethose, who for the sake ofit, take to drink. Others in-hale their desires andwish for something speci-al through a pipe the out-come can sometimes befunny, however remainselusive. They are also tho-se, who are under the impression, thatthey could use “love“ to jump in theirhead – but what do they know about
love? And then there arealso those, who are per-manently listening to thegreat thoughts of the hu-man mankind.
