GRANGEMORE STUDSTRIVING FOR THE TOP
By Melissa Steele
The collective noun for O'Callaghans is unknown, but at
bloodstock sales around the world they can often be found
travelling as a pack. An intimidating force perhaps, the
Yeomanstown O'Callaghans--not to be confused with their
cousins, the equally successful Tally-Ho ones--are a close-knit
clan who have made a prosperous business of breeding and
trading horses with a little help from sire sensation Dark Angel
(Ire).
Away from the sales, though, the band of brothers are
dissipated and at Grangemore Stud, Guy O'Callaghan is quite
clearly doing his own thing.
"It's important to be your own man," says O'Callaghan, the
third of four brothers. "It's one thing that Gay [his father]
instilled in us from an early age, you've got to be independent
and work for yourself and ultimately, it's up to you to make it
happen."
Undoubtedly a close team, the siblings' WhatsApp group pings
away in confirmation of that. O'Callaghan continues, "We'd
often decide on things together, but you're perfectly entitled to
do your own thing. We all own our own stock; we own bits and
pieces of each other's stock of course but it wouldn't work if it
was all communal. I've often bought mares or foals that the lads
didn't like, and vice versa, and you're out on your own."

SOFFIA RETIRED, TO VISIT FRANKEL MGSW Soffia (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}--Rime A Rien {GB}, by
Amadeus Wolf {GB}) has been retired and will visit Frankel (GB)
this season, Racing Post reported on Sunday. Bred by Newsells
Park Stud and an 16,000gns Tattersalls December weanling
turned €52,000 Tattersalls Ireland September yearling, the dark
bay was trained by Eddie Lynam for Lady O=Reilly. A four-time
winner at three, Soffia truly shone at four, taking the Listed Sole
Power Sprint S., G3 Ballyogan S. and G2 Sapphire S. in succession
from May to June of 2019. She was a last out fifth in the G1
Flying Five S. at The Curragh on Irish Champions Weekend and
her record stands at 15-7-2-1, $323,202. She has changed hands
again, and will head to the paddocks under new ownership.

Grangemore Stud Cont. from p1
A former head boy at Glenstal Abbey, O'Callaghan remains a
conscientious student and at a kitchen table with laptop open
and a pile of catalogues at his side he explains, "Genuinely, my
favourite thing is to go through catalogues and flick through the
racing results. Seeing what trainers are doing what or which
fillies are knocking around. What nice 2-year-olds could be
available and just watching it all. It's not a chore, it's an absolute
passion. Knowing what's going on in our game is really
important."
It is a habit that has paid dividends for O'Callaghan who,
paying more attention than most to the Gumley Claiming S.
(Class 6) at Leicester one Monday evening in 2011, claimed an
Exceed And Excel (Aus) filly for just ,10,000 that would
ultimately give him the dream start to his tenure at Grangemore
Stud. It wasn't even the first past the post that caught his eye
but rather the eighth-placed Layla Jamil (Ire) who, on her first
visit to the family's Dark Angel (Ire), bred G2 Superlative S.
winner Birchwood (Ire).
"I had an ideal start with Birchwood (Ire), he was an
unbelievable flag bearer," says O'Callaghan. "I claimed the mare
for 10 grand. She was from a very good family, a family I had
been trying to get into for about a year and I couldn't believe
she was in a claimer or that I was lucky enough to get her. Her
first foal was Birchwood (Ire) and she's been a good producer
ever since.
"[Layla Jamil]'s now 3-year-old, called Leafhopper (Ire), won
first time out in Newmarket for John Gosden last year. She
hasn't been seen since but by all accounts, she's sound. Perhaps
she's just a filly who will benefit from a bit of time."
With a strong hope that we haven't seen the best of
Leafhopper (Ire) yet, the grey daughter of Dark Angel (Ire) has
already provided O'Callaghan with one of his greatest
achievements to date when selling for 480,000gns at Book 1 of
the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.
"Going to the sales can be a bit like getting your homework
corrected. You just want to have done a good job and to get an
A. The sales can be quite intense and often you only get 30
seconds of a show to prove it. Most people will have made their
mind up in the first 30 seconds so every show is important.
Initially, it was hard to gauge at the sale how [Leafhopper] was
being received as she was selling on the final day of Book 1. It
can be a funny sale given how much inspecting goes on from the
previous Saturday; it can seem an awfully long time until the
following Thursday, but she was a filly that grew into the sale.
Each day the sale went on the better she got and thankfully it all
came together."
For that piece of homework it was assuredly an 'A' for
O'Callaghan, who has enjoyed some notable days in the sale ring
during his relatively short career to date, but he takes equal
pride in his results on the track having bred or traded over 40
winners since moving into Grangemore Stud. Cont. p3

Guy O=Callaghan | Racing Post
Grangemore Stud Cont.
Like many an Irish stud master before him, he has his sights set
on speed and breeding a Royal Ascot winning 2-year-old would
be his ultimate goal.
"I'd love to breed a Royal Ascot winner," he says. "Especially a
Coventry winner. I'm aiming to try to breed fast horses that are
precocious. I mean, as long as I continue to produce good horses
that's great but the Coventry is the race I'd really like to win.
"The electricity of a good sale in an auction ring is incredible,"
continues O'Callaghan. "You've had contact with that horse for
its whole life, through the prep to the sales, to the moment it
goes through the ring. But the pride of seeing them going on and
doing well on the track is the real bit of kudos that can't be
bought. It's out of our hands as vendors and breeders. Whether
you sold them for 5,000 or 105,000, all you want for them is to
be successful. Then you can get your decision in breeding or
trading that horse vindicated."
O'Callaghan's decision to buy and breed from Layla Jamil (Ire)
has certainly been vindicated although he's keen to downplay it.
"I know full well that was a fluke," he says. "And I wouldn't
dare claim otherwise but she was the bit of luck I needed to get
me on the map."
When it comes to the actual map, rather than the
metaphorical one, Grangemore Stud is positioned on prime
farmland on the edge of The Curragh of Kildare. With 105 acres,
O'Callaghan has grown his stock from nine yearlings and four
mares up to 18 yearlings and 15 mares which he says is close to
capacity.
"I wouldn't like to get much bigger where I am," he says. "But
I'm lucky to have the kind of good dry land that allows the
horses to be out year-round. They come off the farm with great
bone and good feet which helps them to go on and do their
thing." Cont. p4

GOING TO THE SALES CAN BE A BIT
LIKE GETTING YOUR HOMEWORK
CORRECTED. YOU JUST WANT TO
HAVE DONE A GOOD JOB AND
TO GET AN ‘A’Guy O’Callaghan
Grangemore Stud Cont.
Walking into a field which is home to five yearling colts that
include three Dark Angels (Ire), an El Kabeir and a Gutaifan (Ire),
there appears to be a theme developing.
"In both breeding and pinhooking, I'll always support the
Yeomanstown sires," confirms O'Callaghan. "At the end of the
day I'm on the team and we're in it together.
"I'm very lucky to have access to very good stallions. Of course,
Dark Angel (Ire) is a superstar, Camacho (GB) is rock-solid and
there are some exciting young horses to avail of as well. We're
really excited about El Kabeir because his stock are just class and
the new horse, Invincible Army (Ire), we're really looking
forward to.
"My biggest thing for the farm since I moved in is to keep
upgrading the mares," he says. "I made the decision to invest in
better mares over the past three years. I went out to buy good-
looking, black-type sprint fillies and I feel it has helped me breed
some really nice stock this year.@
He added, AI have what I think are some really good Dark
Angels, a couple of smashing El Kabeirs and a cracking Gutaifan
among the homebred crop. It's great to have a bunch of
homebreds that you believe are good as it's never a guarantee."
It's not all about homebreds though. O'Callaghan's business
model is based partly on pinhooks and last year he purchased
nine foals to sell on as yearlings, all of them by "outside sires.@
They range from a Showcasing (GB) colt he bought at Tattersalls
for 125,000gns to a Profitable (Ire) filly picked up for i19,000 at
Goffs, with an emphasis on quality over quantity.
"The real aim in pinhooking is trying to sell horses for six
figures; that's the way the market has gone," says O'Callaghan.
"If you can produce the stock that are worthy of it, that is the
goal. There's nearly more buyers in that section of the market;
trying to get 25 or 30,000 for a horse can be sometimes
impossible.
"Last year I was fortunate to have some good pinhooks such as
the highest-priced Dandy Man (Ire) ever (a i52,000 foal that
made i220,000 at the Goffs Orby) as well as an Adaay (Ire) foal
I bought for 30,000gns and sold to Shadwell at Goffs UK for
,110,000. Results like that really help to carry the year. That's
why I think it's important to have a mix of both homebreds and
pinhooks, so they complement each other and you're not
dependent solely on either what you breed or what you can
buy."
As we tip into February, the yearling sales seem a long way off
yet over half a million euros invested in foals is a significant
outlay for anyone, particularly for the self-confessed worrier.
"I climb the walls," explains O'Callaghan. "My family give me
some stick for being an absolute box walker--I am the worst. But
that's who I am and I can't help it. I've come to learn though that
nearly every problem is solvable.@ Cont. p5

He adds, AThe first year, every time I had a problem it was like
it was the end of the world, but you get over it and you learn to
just gradually deal with it. As long as the place doesn't burn
down around you, you'll live."
With a wise head on his shoulders, he continues, "Mistakes are
the best learning curve. But if you're here to stay then you'll
learn from it and you'll move on. You can't blank it out and
pretend it didn't happen; you have to remember that it
happened but not dwell on it. Learn the lesson and move on
from it."
As an outsider looking in there appears to have been very few
mistakes made thus far, but O'Callaghan is his own biggest critic
and you get the feeling that he will always strive to be doing
things better.

AShe was a very good filly and was the first foal Amy ever
bought,@ the trainer told Racing Post of the granddaughter of
French listed winner Rainbow Crossing (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}).
AWe ended up buying her off Amy as a yearling and we knew
she had ability and that she was useful as a 2-year-old. She
progressed into a very good 3-year-old and ended up being a
high-class 4-year-old. She=s gone to stud now and will be sadly
missed. She ended the season with a rating of 115 and was one
of the best, arguably the best filly I ever trained. My
understanding is she=s going to visit Frankel.@

STORM CIARA CAUSES CANCELLATIONS Storm Ciara has forced the abandonment of all three of
Sunday's meetings in Britain and Ireland. Exeter was first to be
called off, shortly before a scheduled 8 a.m. inspection, and then
Southwell's all-weather meeting and Punchestown's Grand
National Trial card followed around an hour later. Gales,
forecast to continue throughout the day, put paid to Exeter and
also Southwell. At Punchestown, it was initially hoped the
high-profile fixture would survive--but after almost 30mm of
further rain on Sunday morning, it was cancelled too.
A Tweet from Exeter before 8 a.m. confirmed racing would not
take place.
It read, "Unfortunately racing today has been abandoned.
Wind speeds have reached unacceptable mph gusts this
morning, and our localised forecast predict this to continue for
the remainder of today, affecting our racing operation, public
safety and grandstand areas."
Southwell and Punchestown then fell in quick succession.
The Irish track tweeted, "Following a further 27mm since 8
a.m. racing is now cancelled."
That amounted to 53mm since the previous evening, and the
volume of rain created flash flooding and waterlogging at the
track--with original entries standing. Cont. p6

But Punchestown announced later on Sunday morning that the
fixture has already been re-scheduled for Tuesday--with original
entries standing.
Racing will not take place at waterlogged Lingfield on Tuesday,
however, after that course failed a Sunday inspection.
Gales were the problem at Southwell, who tweeted, "Racing is
abandoned this afternoon due to high winds. Equine and human
welfare is of paramount importance and unfortunately the
weather has beaten us today."
Plumpton has announced a precautionary race-day inspection
at 8 a.m. for the card there on Monday. Winds are expected to
ease before then. But up to 20mm of rain is forecast on ground
already described as heavy, soft in places.
Catterick's card has already been called off though, with
flooded stables forcing the cancellation.
The track tweeted, "Regrettably due to the river Swale
bursting its banks and flooding the stables, racing for tomorrow
has had to be abandoned."

Sunday=s session topper by I Am Invincible | TDN AusNZ
Denise Martin | TDN AusNZ
DENISE MARTIN STRIKESFOR >VINNY= FILLY
Star Thoroughbreds= Denise Martin secured the session-topper
on day one of the Inglis Classic Sale with inside knowledge of the
family spurring her on to $350,000 for an I Am Invincible filly,
Lot 256, from the draft of Fairhill Park.
At A Glance$ Day one of the sale grossed $17,733,000 at an average
of $91,881 with the median $80,000 and a clearance
rate of 78%.
$ Star Thoroughbreds= Denise Martin outlays the day=s
top price of $350,000 for Fairhill Farm=s I Am Invincible
filly, Lot 256, a year after also buying her sister from the
Hunter Valley nursery.
$ A son of Deep Field impressed Michael Wallace and
partners and they went to $320,000 for Lot 155 from
Fairview Park Stud=s consignment.
$ Bell River Thoroughbreds mare a dream return as
vendors when it celebrated the $240,000 sale of Lot
178, a colt by Hinchinbrook.
$ Trainer Adrian Bott had an eye on next year=s $2-million
Inglis Millennium when he parted with $240,000 for a
son of Sebring, Lot 39, presented by Yarraman Park
Stud.
Matching Pair Martin went to $330,000 for the I Am Invincible filly=s sister 12
months ago and was close to her maximum budget on Sunday
before seeing off her opposition in a spirited duel to add the
sibling to the Star Thoroughbreds stable. She signed the docket
for the top lot with the Randwick Bloodstock Agency.
AWe=ve had success with I Am Invincible with Invincibella of
course and I was keen to get this one, it seemed like a good fit,@
she said. AI might have gone a little bit more and I=m happy to
have her.@
The sister, Joviality, is unraced and was to have trialled this
week for trainer Chris Waller, but the inclement Sydney weather
has put paid to that. The siblings are out of the winning Fastnet
Rock mare Limbo Down (NZ) and the family of the G3 Black Opal
S. winner and sire Handsome Ransom and the stakes winner
Danjaya (Danehill {USA}).
For Fairhill=s Mike O=Donnell, it was another terrific result for
Limbo Down, who is in foal to Pierro.
AIt=s just fantastic, I=m very pleased. She is a beautiful filly and
I=m delighted she has gone to Denise,@ he said. AWe were
expecting around $245,000 so it=s a great result.@
Liking for Shalaa Martin struck an earlier blow when she went to $220,000 for a
filly, Lot 20, from the first crop of Shalaa (Ire) offered by Aquis
on behalf of Emirates Park.
AThe filly looks like she will get up and go early, but we=ll wait
and see,@ Martin said. AI thought she would be expensive, she
was something of a stand out, and that=s about what I thought I
would have to pay.@

Lot 38, a colt by Written Tycoon out of Cannolina (GB) | TDN AusNZ
Mark Webster of Inglis | TDN AusNZ
The youngster boasts a speedy pedigree as a daughter of
Boom Time Savings (Secret Savings {USA}), who was Group 2
placed in the Silver Slipper S. and the Reisling Slipper Trial and
finished fourth in the G1 Golden Slipper S. She is a half-sister to
the G3 Maribyrnong Plate winner Boomwa (Mutawaajid) and
the second dam Glenview (NZ) (Sir Tristram {Ire}) was a multiple
Group 2 winner and a three-time Group 1 placegetter.
AShe looks a very precocious filly and one of the yearlings I
particularly wanted to go home with,@ she said.
Her sire Shalaa won five of his six starts as a juvenile, including
the G1 Middle Park S. and the G1 Prix Morny to earn champion
European 2-year-old honours and the son of Invincible Spirit
(Ire) shuttles to Arrowfield Stud from his French base at Haras
de Bouquetot.
Martin was also wowed by a son of Written Tycoon, Lot 38,
with an international background and went to $180,000 for the
colt who was offered by Canning Downs Stud.
Conditions Overcome Despite torrential rain throughout the day and strong winds
lashing the Riverside Stables, trade was strong and Inglis
Managing Director Mark Webster more than pleased with the
outcome of the day.
Day one of the sale grossed $17,733,000 at an average of
$91,881 with the median $80,000 and a clearance rate of 78%.
AI think some people were in shock when they arrived and saw
the horizontal rain and some buyers couldn=t get out to see the
horses,@ Webster said. AWe had more than 150ml of rain, which
made it a challenging day. Putting it all into context, to average
nearly $92,000 is quite respectable. A lot of the passed in horses
will get sold. We traded $17.7 million and that=s the highest
amount of turnover on a single day for the Classic Sale so that=s
a positive.
AObviously, the market is very selective and won=t compromise
on type, but I think we=ll have more horses make $100,000 or
more than in the past. We should have another strong day with
the forecast showing five to 10ml of rain.@
Webster said he was pleased to see the syndicators so active
in a market dominated by local money with the Coronavirus
limiting Asian involvement.
Quest for Speed China Horse Club Bloodstock and Racing Manager Michael
Wallace found exactly what he wanted and didn=t hesitate to
pay, $320,000, for his target colt by Deep Field. Wallace and
partners adhere to simple philosophy when it comes to sourcing
their yearlings--precocity is at the top of their wish list--and the
son of Group 2 winner Deep Field, Lot 155, fitted the bill
perfectly.
AHe is for our Newgate-China Horse Club syndicate. Everyone
knows what we are after, we want those fast, sprinting 2- and
3-year-old colts and he fitted that,@ Wallace said. AThere=s a few
people waiting and, as we=ve seen all year, these quality
2-year-old looking colts make their money, especially by
stallions as good as Deep Field.
AHe has got a lot of power, a lot of quality, so you can see that
coming through. He=s got that Exceed And Excel balance in him
as well so he is a horse that will fit the mould.@
The Deep Field colt was offered by Fairview Park Stud and is
out of the unraced Exceed And Excel mare Fragrant Storm. She
is a half-sister to the stakes winner Texan (Stratum) and the
family of the G1 Toorak H. winner Red Dazzler.
AThe colt is a good mover like Cosmic Force, but this horse is a
bit more physically square and stronger, but the horse is
beautiful and very athletic.@
TDN AUSTRALIA/NEW ZEALAND • PAGE 3 OF 4 • THETDN.COM MONDAY • 10 FEBRUARY 2020
Michael Wallace | TDN AusNZ
Cosmic Force (Deep Field) has won three of his eight starts for
Peter and Paul Snowden, including the G2 Roman Consul S. and
the G3 Pago Pago S. The partnership also races debut winner
and Saturday=s G3 Blue Diamond Prelude runner-up Rulership (I
Am Invincible).
AHe lost no admirers. He wasn=t beaten far and the winner is a
very, very good but two weeks= time is a different story. We will
stick him in there again and see how we go in the G1 Blue
Diamond S.@
Bell Tolls Bell River Thoroughbreds made a dream return to the Classic
Sale when its Hinchinbrook colt, Lot 178, was snapped up by the
China Horse Club-Newgate Bloodstock Partnership for $240,000.
AThat was a cracking result. We wanted to come back with a
bang and he=s a quality colt bought by a syndicate that knows
what they are doing,@ said James
Ferguson, son of Bell River
principals Andrew and Georgie.
AThat was about the mark we
hoped for. He was one of our
busiest colts and he never
played up.@
The Hinchinbrook colt is a
half-brother to the G3
Kindergarten S. winner Furnaces
with their dam the stakes
performer Heat of The Fire
(Strategic). It is most notably the
family of the two-time Group 1
winner Melito (Redoute=s
Choice).
The Fergusons sold their
Wellington property two years
ago and in October 2018 purchased a major rural holding at
Dungog in the Hunter Valley, which has subsequently been
developed to continue their Thoroughbred breeding interests.
Formerly known as Croon Park and originally used for dairy
farming as well as lucerne, corn and rye grass crops, the 175
acre property was bought at auction for $2.4 million.
AOur last Classic draft was in 2015 when we sold Extreme
Choice. We=ve got 27 broodmares at the moment and we want
to build that up to 30 or 40, but it=s a slow project and we want
to keep it small and keep on breeding quality horses,@ Ferguson
said.
Extreme Choice was a $100,000 purchase for trainer Mick
Price and won the G1 Blue Diamond S. and the G1 Moir S.
before his retirement to Newgate and his first crop are on show
at the Classic Sale.
Millennium Candidate A number of factors, not the least being next year=s $2-million
Inglis Millennium, led Sydney trainer Adrian Bott to part with
$240,000 for Lot 39, a Sebring colt presented by Yarraman Park
Stud.
AHe was a nice imposing individual and I would think he would
get up nice and early for us. He was just the sort of type we tried
to target out of the sale and he was sold by a vendor who has
great results producing horses,@ said Bott, who operates in
partnership with Gai Waterhouse. AWe want to get a horse who
can get us back for the Millennium next year and he looks like an
ideal candidate. He is by a stallion we love and we=ve had a lot
of success with the progeny.@
Bott wasn=t surprised by the interest in the colt and had
expected to dig deep to secure him.
AI think it=s the type of sale where those types of horses stand
out and I think you have to be
prepared to pay that sort of
price,@ he said.
The son of the late Sebring,
whose leading representative
has been the five-time Group 1
winner and sire Dissident, is out
of the Canny Lad mare Canny
Time and she is a half-sister to
the G2 Danehill S. winner and
G1 Doomben Ten Thousand
runner-up Charlie Boy
(Myboycharlie {Ire}). The second
dam Maritime (Falbrav {Ire}) is
an unraced half-sister to the G2
Wakeful S. winner Quays (Royal
Academy {USA}), also placed
three times at the highest level,
who produced the black type winner Quayside (Street Cry {Ire}).
He is out of the unraced Cannolina (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and she is
a sister to the French stakes winner Al Malhouf (GB) (Dutch Art
{GB}). The pedigree page also features the G1 Meydan Dubai
Duty Free S. winner Al Shemali (GB) (Medicean {GB}).
Toward the end of the session, Martin also signed at $210,000
for Tyreel Stud=s Pierro colt, Lot 246, out of the three-time
winner Lanikai (I Am Invincible). The dam is from the family of
the G1 Oakleigh Plate winner River Dove (Hurricane Sky) and the
G1 New Zealand Derby winner Crown Prosecutor (Medaglia
d=Oro {USA}).
Satisfying Sale Tyreel Stud=s Linda Monds was thrilled with the attention her
Pierro filly, Lot 103, received before she was knocked down to
Queensland bloodstock agent John Foote.

AI had a decent reserve on her and I think she=s an absolute
athlete in the making. She=s absolutely beautiful and from a very
good family,@ she said. AWe bred her to Pierro for a reason and
the product we just sold was exactly what we wanted for her. I
am very proud that John Foote saw exactly what I saw in her.
She=s going to a Melbourne owner and is staying in Australia,
which makes me happy. I own the broodmare Dizzy Diva and I
think this filly is going to put that mare on the map.
APierro is having an incredible year and I really don=t think you
can go wrong with a stallion like Pierro, who can get runners at
all distances. I love the stallion and credit to Coolmore and the
investors in that stallion, who is just doing a great job.@
Dizzy Diva (Starspangledbanner), who is in foal to So You Think
(NZ), was a $100,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Broodmare Sale
purchase and is a daughter of the black-type winner Dizzlago
(Encosta De Lago). The third dam is the G1 Australian Oaks
winner Diizelle (Zabeel {NZ}), with the headline act in the family
her brother Vengeance Of Rain (NZ), the multiple Group 1
winner and former Hong Kong Horse of the Year.
Foote purchased the filly for an undisclosed client and will be
heading to Victoria.
With a mix of speed and stamina in the pedigree, a wait and
see approach will be taken to determine the filly=s distance
aptitude.
AWe=ll let her tell us about that. She=ll probably be trained in
Melbourne,@ said Foote, who pre-sale value of the youngster
was met. AI don=t know what Pierro=s service fee will be this
year, but it will probably be over $100,000.@

NADAL SHOWS FIGHTTO TAKE SAN VICENTE
It wasn=t nearly as easy as his 1-5 odds suggested it would be,
but >TDN Rising Star= Nadal (Blame) survived a grueling pace and
gutted out a hard-fought win that would have made his
notoriously tenacious namesake proud in Sunday=s GII San
Vicente S. at Santa Anita, the promising colt=s first step along the
GI Kentucky Derby trail.
Garnering expectations early on after commanding $700,000
as a :10 flat Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream breezer, the bay showed up
to his Jan. 19 debut with a sharp worktab and delivered on 6-5
favoritism with a 3 3/4-length frontrunning success and a 98
Beyer despite breaking a bit tardily. Drilling sharply twice over
this track in the interim and back in three weeks here, Nadal was
clearly the public=s pick and broke more smoothly this time
around. Deferring the lead narrowly under Joel Rosario, he sat a
close-up second as Ginobili clicked off a :21.81 quarter, with
huge longshot Party Town (Shackleford) to their inside in third.
Eclipse champion juvenile Storm the Court (Court Vision),
making his 3-year-old debut, tracked from fourth of a tight pack
down the backside. Party Town was the first to give way, leaving
it to Nadal and Ginobili to spar through a scorching :44.09 half.
Those two arrived at the top of the stretch together, with
Ginobili surprisingly forging a narrow lead past the three-
sixteenths marker. Nadal, however, was hand ridden by Rosario
and responded to poke his nose back in front once set down
nearing the furlong grounds. Cont. p3
BREEDING STOCK SALES SEASON WRAPS UP
AT FASIG FEBRUARY by Christie DeBernardis
The final auction of the breeding stock sales season kicks off
Monday at Fasig-Tipton with their two-day Winter Mixed Sale. A
total of 542 horses filled the initial catalogue and that number
has risen to 651 with the addition of late supplements. Hips
1-324 will sell Monday and Tuesday=s session starts off with Hip
325 and runs through the end of the supplemental catalogue.
Both sessions start at 10 a.m.
AI think there are several short yearlings with very interesting
pedigrees in the sale,@ said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd
Browning. AThere are some high quality broodmare prospects
and in-foal mares, particularly with the strength of some of the
late additions that have come into the catalogue. We are
optimistic. I think we will see a continuation of what we have
seen in the marketplace, in terms of a certain level of selectivity
from the buyers. We do expect to have lots of interest and lots
of demand on a significant number of horses.@ Cont. p4

Nadal Guts Out San Vicente Score cont. from p1
Ginobili, game and determined, took one final try at the
favorite in the final 100 yards, but could not quite get to him, as
the Bob Baffert trainee hit the wire a determined half-length in
front of his pesky rival. Fast
Enough (Eddington) completed
the trifecta, with Storm the
Court checking in an even
fourth.
AToday, I told Joel, >Don=t get
cute, just go,=@ said winning
trainer Bob Baffert. AThey took it
to him, but if we=re gonna get
beat, get beat. I trained him light
for this, so this is my serious
work. I thought he was gonna
get beat. He got to gut it out
today, so he=s got a good
foundation now. This should set
him up pretty good and I think
we=ll go to the [Mar. 14 GII]
Rebel.@
AHe broke sharp and he handled the pressure from the
outside. I was never worried about it,@ said Rosario. AMy horse
was moving very well and I was confident because I could feel I
had a lot of horse under me. He was very impressive. He ran
very fast today and he runs like he=ll like two turns, but you
never know until they do it.@
AThis horse looks like it could
be a special horse,@ added
winning co-owner George
Bolton. AYou just want him to be
happy and hold together. He will
be on the road now. He=ll be on
different surfaces and he=s going
to go a different distance yet
again, so he will go maybe go to
the Rebel. I=m proud we got that
chance. I=m extremely happy
about everything that has
happened here.@
As for runner-up Ginobili,
trainer Richard Baltas
commented, AAt the quarter
pole, I thought I might get
[Nadal]. We=ve got a nice colt, I just don=t think he wants to go
very far. He ran great and I=m very proud of him.@

One of the auction=s 2018 graduates Storm the Court (Court

GI TVG Breeders= Cup Juvenile at 45-1 and taking home the
Eclipse Award for champion juvenile colt.
AIt is always nice to have a horse like that jump up,@ Browning
said. AIt just shows you that top quality horses can come from a
variety of different sales and a variety of different places. That is
the great thing about the Thoroughbred world, you never know
where the next good one is going to come from.@
A total of 327 horses changed at the hands at the 2019 edition
of this sale for a gross of $9,659,400. The average was $29,539
and the median was $15,000, both of which were increases
from the previous year. The RNA rate was 20.4%, which was
down from 2018.
Last year=s Fasig February sale was topped by Grade II-winning
broodmare prospect Cheekaboo (Unusual Heat), who brought
$300,000 from K R Japan. The most expensive short yearling was
a $200,000 daughter of red hot sire Into Mischief, purchased by

Gulfstream Park Handicapper & TV Personality Ron Nicoletti
Adam Coglianese
NICOLETTI STILL RUNNING ON FULL TILT
by Christina Bossinakis
A longtime handicapper and TV personality in Southern
Florida, Ron Nicoletti has spent the better part of the last 15
years as one of the handicappers and TV talent at Gulfstream
Park in Hallandale, Florida. And while it may seem there was
never a time without a Nicoletti tip sheet or on-air analysis, it
can be argued that the 70-year-old has amassed several
lifetimes prior to embarking on his latest act in horse racing. A
kid from Corona, New York who was instrumental in launching a
trendy Manhattan boutique in his 20's, Nicoletti found success
in the ultra-competitive world of fashion, traveled the globe and
hobnobbed with the stars before launching an enduring career
in horse racing.
Life in the Fast Lane
Raised in Corona, New York, Nicoletti is the second of three
children of Frank and Dolly Nicoletti, who took up residence in
the expanding Queens County city--adjacent to the site of the
World=s Fair (1964-65) and former Shea Stadium--in the 1940s.
AI grew up in Corona, Queens in a very big and fun-loving
Italian family,@ he said. AIf you're looking for the spot, it was right
by the World's Fair or where Shea Stadium was, the baseball
field in New York. I had a really fun childhood with the family. All
the Nicolettis love to laugh, and it was always a great childhood.
My mom passed away when I was younger, but my dad and my
family were so close. My brothers, my sisters, just a fun family. I
have such fond memories of that.@
Despite not having any close ties to sports growing up,
Nicoletti was exposed to many of the nation=s pastimes given his
proximity to some of the region=s most important sporting
venues, including horse racing. Cont. p6

AGrowing up, I loved bike riding, which I still do to this day, and
from a young age, my family always loved going to the track,@ he
said. AI had an uncle, Mike, and my cousin, Tom, whom I idolized
and I went to the track [with them]. I was just amazed how they
could figure out what was happening at the race track.@
After returning from his stint in the Army, a chance encounter
with a friend led Nicoletti to an introduction into the fashion
industry. Engaged as a driver to the owner/designer of a highly-
regarded Manhattan boutique, Nicoletti learned the basics of
the trade.
AI just watched what was done day-to-day--designing clothes,
cutting clothes and everything like that,@ he recalled. AFinally, I
was given a job as the assistant manager, then the manager of
the clothing store---PJ Boutique in Greenwich Village.@
With some experience under his belt, Nicoletti invited
childhood friend--Richard Famiglietti--to get into the business.
AWe borrowed $3,500 each from our parents, and we opened
up a clothing store in Manhattan called Jenny Waterbags. We
chose the name Jenny Waterbags, because of a woman that
lived in our hometown, Corona. She would chase us, so we
jokingly called her >Jenny Waterbags=.
And it didn=t take long for the >casually swank= boutique to
take flight.
AFor a while, the store just eked along, but it got more popular
and more popular,@ he explained. AWe started getting some
press. And it was a bit off the beaten path. We were one of the
first clothing stores to open up in Gramercy Park on 19th Street
in Manhattan.@
With the new-found popularity, the quality of clothing
improved, and as a result, it began to draw a different branch of
clientele, including Elton John, Bianca Jagger and Focus=s Jan
Akkerman.

Nicoletti sporting the Esso jumpsuit (circa 1973)
AAll of a sudden we became popular,@ he recalled. AThen,
everything changed. We started making better clothes, pants
and jackets. People were coming in. It was amazing. We made
clothes for John Lennon, Paul McCartney and David Bowie. We
actually designed the clothes for
David Bowie's [Diamond Dog Tour
in 1974] that he did in
Manhattan.@
Specializing in custom-made silk
and leather apparel, Jenny
Waterbags gained lasting celebrity
with a fortuitous, almost
accidental, addition to its
collection.
AWe found a guy in Brazil, who
had been stuck with 1,000 of
these jumpsuits that said >Esso' on
them. Esso had just changed to
Exxon [in 1972]. So, we brought
them back to the United States. It
was the biggest seller for months. The Rolling Stones, Eric
Clapton, Cat Stevens were just some of the people who wore
these jumpsuits. We also sold them to Bloomingdales. I always
remember the day I was sitting on the floor of the store, since
my job was to pin the pants on the bottom for the length, and I
looked around and there were 20 people wearing the Esso
jumpsuit. It was insane.@
AIt was just being in the right place at the right time,@ said
Nicoletti, when asked to reflect on
his experience in the fashion
world. ABecause of that, we had
the chance to meet all different
celebrities throughout the years.
It was a long time ago, so it was a
whole different world, but what a
great world to be involved in and
to be that lucky. To think, I went
from standing on the corner in
Corona, Queens to being in the
clothing business without any
idea, ever in the whole world,
that's where it was going to lead
me. We had such great success.@
Bye Bye Jenny
Despite all the success stemming from Jenny Waterbags, the
demands of operating a business on an expanding scale soon
caught up with Nicoletti, a self-described >hippie= at heart.

Another Feather in his Cap: Nicoletti officiated at son Dan &
daughter-in-law Kelsey=s wedding last year (wife Linda, right)
AWe had opened up seven stores throughout the United
States,@ he said. AWe even had one in Martha=s Vineyard
[Massachusetts] in the summer. We really branched out. We
had shoes from Paris, and Italy--Piaggio and Milan. I traveled all
over the world to buy fabrics and shoes etc. Richie was a New
York guy, and loved to stay at the store, so it was a perfect
relationship. I had an apartment in Tangier, Morocco, in the
summertime, and I=d go regularly to Ibiza [Spain]. It was just
constant work. I finally decided I [had] had enough. So, I made a
deal with my partner and sold out. That was it. I moved to
Florida and I was going to retire, so I bought a boat. I was going
to be a salty seadog for the rest of my life and live on the boat.
That lasted about four hours until I got bitten by 16 mosquitoes
and decided, maybe I won't live on the boat. I'll buy a little
house, and I'll just go on the boat. And I did that for years.@
Racing Came Calling
After settling into a considerably more sedate lifestyle in
Southern Florida, Nicoletti once again found a new opportunity
through a friend: interactive marketing, commerce and media
specialist Andy Batkin.
ABefore computers, Andy had a results line where you would
call and get [race] results for 10 cents a call,@ explained Nicoletti.
AIt was the only way to get results in those days. This had never
been done before, and he wanted to branch out to Florida, so I
would give the results. I actually had the teletype in my house
and I would do these results throughout the day. It was fun.@
And from that experience, more opportunities arose. An initial
job recreating call-in stretch calls of races eventually led to a
handicapping position at Hialeah Park. Gaining recognition while
negotiating the Southern Florida circuit--Hialeah, Calder and
Gulfstream Park--Nicoletti=s selections picked up traction and
were published in the track program before being picked up by
an out-of-state publication.
ASo, I became a handicapper and I gave my selections,@ he
recalled. AThen someone said, >Hey, can you do TV?= I said,
>Sure.= Scared out of my mind, you know. And started doing TV.
The rest, as they say, is history.@
While Nicoletti=s expanding career had its rewards, it wasn=t
without its challenges. But Nicoletti is the first to admit he
relished every moment in equal proportion.
AFinally, I get the job to be the on-air guy at Calder and I go on,
I do my first or second race and a little old man calls me over,@
Nicoletti explained. AHe said, >You should be on the news.= I'm
thinking, >Boy, the guy thinks I should be on the news as a
anchor.= He said, >No, as a statistic, you bum. They should kill
you.= So, you're only as good as your last pick. And I love it.@
When asked how the game has changed over the past two
decades, he offered, AIt=s gotten a little tougher now with the
advent of social media, boy, because some people can be pretty
rough on there. But I love it. One day you're the best, the next
day you're the worst. But if you can do that every day and you
love horseracing, you will meet the Damon Runyon-type
characters and just have fun with it. And I love when people tell
me I stink and then other people tell me they love me. It just
goes on and on like that.@
The Next Act
In 2010, Nicoletti briefly left Gulfstream following a change of
management, but turned the setback into an opportunity to try
his hand at acting.

AI=ve always wanted to try acting, and I saw an ad to play an
Italian [father] in >Tony and Tina=s Wedding= at the Broward
Center for a month,@ said Nicoletti. AIt was my first audition.
When I got there, every guy trying out for the same part looked
like me. A week later, I got the part. Everyone came out from
the racetrack to see me. It was really a lot of fun. So I thought it
was an easy game. I didn=t have as much luck after that, but I did
get to do a couple of Indie films, that will never see the light of
day, and I was a body double in a local sitcom. But I=ll always
remember I got the very first part I ever tried out for. It was
wild.@
Despite having the chance to live out an ambition to act, the
draw of the track never let go of Nicoletti, who was asked to
return to racing after his brief stint in show business.
And what was his impetus to return?
AI've had the great fortune of working with some of the
greatest people in horse racing,@ he said. AI'm getting a little long
in the tooth, but I couldn't think of doing anything else because
as I walk into this door every day, I have fun.@
With seemingly plenty of fun left to be had, Nicoletti admits
retirement has crossed his mind.
AYou always think that when you're getting older,@ he said.
AEverybody keeps asking me, >How many years are you going to
do this?= And I say, >What else am I going to do?= I bike ride. All I
could do is bike ride. The boat thing didn't work out very well
and I don't like catching fish anymore. So what else would I do? I
mean, I absolutely love coming to work. I'm lucky to be healthy
enough to do that and I have fun doing it. Why would I choose
to stop?@
And for those familiar with Nicoletti, the word >stop= simply
isn=t in the TV personality=s lexicon. And the reason is clear.
AI would equate it to it's like a kid working in a candy store,@ he
said of the latest chapter in his personal journey. AIt's just a
great, great way to live your life, if you're a horse racing fan.@

CHANCE IT WORKS FOR FOY Shooting Star Thoroughbreds= Chance It (Currency Swap)
tuned up for the Feb. 29 GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S.
with a five-furlong breeze in company in :59.74 (3/43) at
Gulfstream Park Sunday.
AIt was a good work. I=m happy with where we=re at,@ trainer
Saffie Joseph, Jr. said. AHe=ll have two more works and we
should be ready to go in the Fountain of Youth.@
Chance It is coming off a win in the Jan. 4 Mucho Macho Man
S. Sole Volante (Karakontie {Jpn}), who finished third that day,
returned to win the GIII Sam F. Davis S. at Tampa Bay Downs
Saturday.
AThe true test for any race comes in four or five weeks when
you see how the form works out,@ Joseph said. ASmash Factor
(Khozan) [second behind Chance It in the In Reality S. last
September and sixth in the Mucho Macho Man] came back to
win [a Feb. 5 optional claimer] and Sole Volante won at Tampa.
To beat those horses off a layoff was impressive.@
TDN NEW STALLIONS: OMAHA BEACH
by Bill Finley
If a horse is standing at a major farm in Kentucky you can be
assured that he was a quality racehorse. That=s Omaha Beach
(War Front--Charming, by Seeking the Gold). He earned
$1.6 million, won three Grade I races and would have been the
favorite in the GI Kentucky Derby if not for a minor issue that led
to his being scratched.
But what separates Omaha Beach, who is entering stud this
year at Spendthrift Farm, from so many others is his versatility.
During his 2019 campaign, he won at distances as short as six
furlongs and as long as a mile-and-an-eighth. He was also
competitive in grass races and, considering that he is a son of
War Front, would have likely excelled on that surface if trainer
Richard Mandella and owner Rick Porter decided to take that
route.
AOmaha Beach's versatility as a race horse is really something
we haven't seen very much of in recent years,@ said Spendthrift
General manager Ned Toffey. ATo win sprinting, and to win
stretching out to a mile and an eighth, just speaks to this horse's
inherent ability. That's one of the things that you really want to
see with a stallion. It doesn't matter what they asked him to do,
when they lined up, he was able to do it.@ Cont. p10

Click above to watch our video at Spendthift with Omaha Beach
As Toffey looks back on Omaha Beach=s racing career, it is a
sprint race that he will remember most. He appeared in the
Oct. 5 GI Santa Anita Sprint Championship off a layoff of nearly
six months and faced the razor sharp sprinter Shancelot
(Shanghai Bobby). Running at a distance that many thought at
the time was not his best and coming off a long freshening,
Omaha Beach wasn=t even the favorite that day. Shancelot was.
Mike Smith made sure that Omaha Beach was never far back
and the horse responded with a game effort to win by a head.
AFor me, the Santa Anita Sprint Championship really stands out
because we already knew that he was a router,@ Toffey said. AHe
could run a mile-and-an-eighth, and we were pretty confident
that he would handle a-mile-and-a-quarter. But to see him roll
back and out sprint one of the best sprinters in the country
really stamped him as something special.@
After a second-place finish in the GI Breeders= Cup Dirt Mile,
Omaha Beach won the GI Malibu at seven furlongs. He was
slated to end his career in the GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational,
but Mandella and Porter decided not to take any chances when
X-rays revealed a problem in his right hind fetlock.
That Omaha Beach is a son of War Front is a definite asset.
Toffey said the female family is also noteworthy.
AOmaha Beach is a son of War Front, one of the most prolific
sires of recent years. That's a huge bonus,@ Toffey said. AThe
female family just couldn't be any better. You have the
combination of a little bit of a slant of turf with War Front, but
very much a classic dirt female family. His dam, Charming, is by
Seeking the Gold out of Take Charge Lady. This is about as good
as pedigrees get.@
Upon his arrival at Spendthrift, Toffey was immediately
impressed with the colt=s demeanor and his intelligence.
AOmaha Beach has settled in beautifully,@ he said. AThis is a
really, really intelligent horse. This is something that we'd heard
all year long from Richard Mandella. The horse just couldn't
have done any better. We got him off the van and he went right
into a stall and immediately relaxed. We showed him to
breeders and to the press the next morning and he stood up like
a pro. I don't think we've ever had a horse settle in this well.@
Because of the issues that led to the horse being scratched in
the Pegasus, Spendthrift has been monitoring him closely. There
haven=t been any problems.
AHe's on course to start breeding Feb. 15, which is historically
the start of breeding season,@ Toffey said. AAll the reports have
been very good. We're just trying to be as careful as we can with
him. There's been no swelling and very little, if any, lameness at
all. He's going out in a pen and being hand-walked. We're going
to do that for a little bit longer. When the weather clears, we're
going to start to get him out in the paddock. If we see no
setback at that point, after about a week of doing that, we'll
begin to start the process of test breeding, and try to move
forward from there. And as long as there are no setbacks, and I
don't foresee any, we should be in good shape to start on
schedule.@
Omaha Beach=s stud fee is $45,000. He is part of an impressive
lineup of new stallions Spendthrift has attracted for this
breeding season, a list that also includes Mitole (Eskendereya)
and Vino Rosso (Curlin).
AIt=s been really important to us to offer our breeders quality
individuals at a fair price,@ Toffey said. AWe=re really delighted
that things came together and we were able to land some really
special horses this year. We want to continue to offer our
breeders value at all levels.@
SELECT SALES DISSOLVING PARTNERSHIP Select Sales Agency will begin the process of dissolving its
partnership effective with the end of the Fasig-Tipton Winter
Mixed Sale this week, the agency announced Sunday.
AIt has been a great ride since we started Select Sales in 2009,@
said Select Sales partner Andrew Cary. AThe success we achieved
as a startup to become one of the leading consignors in the
country in a short amount of time, was nothing short of
phenomenal. To have sold horses like Tepin, Sharp Azteca, and
Mucho Gusto, amongst many other graded stakes winners, has
just been an incredible process to be a part of. I couldn=t be
prouder of what we all achieved together. I personally want to
thank all of my partners and our amazing clients for all they did
to contribute to our success over the years. We have a strong
consignment at the FT Winter Mixed Sale and I look forward to
us all finishing together strongly.A

Announcements will be made in the near future regarding
future plans for the Select Sales partners. Earlier Sunday, it was
announced that former Select partner Jay Goodwin would be
moving on to become the account manager for Eaton Sales.
Additionally, founding partner Carrie Brogden announced the
creation of her own consignment, saying that she Ahas formed
Machmer Hall Sales to focus on yearlings. We look forward to
selling our own horses, plus those of long-term clients and
partners. Future press releases to come.@
GOODWIN NAMED EATON ACCOUNT MANAGER Jay Goodwin, formerly a partner in Select Sales Agency, has
been named account manager at Eaton Sales. Goodwin was a
partner at Select for 10 years.
AWe are thrilled to have Jay on board,@ said Eaton Sales
partner Ben McElroy. AHe brings valuable auction experience to
Eaton Sales, in addition to his extensive horsemanship and
unparalleled energy and enthusiasm for horse racing.@
Goodwin, who moved to Lexington in 2005, currently manages
around 125 broodmares on his farm, and formerly oversaw the
business of numerous clients at Select Sales.
AWe are all very excited to welcome Jay to Eaton Sales,@
Eaton=s Reiley McDonald said of the appointment. AHe
understands horse sales as well as anyone in the business and
has a reputation for honesty and hard work. We are excited to
start the year with his addition.@
Goodwin added, ATo join a name like Eaton Sales, Reiley
McDonald, and Ben McElroy was a no brainer for me. I started
getting the BloodHorse magazine 30 years ago and since then
Reiley and Eaton Sales have been names that have led and
landscaped the sales ring in North America. Ben is without a
doubt one of the best bloodstock agents in the business.
Teaming up with two guys at the top of our industry is very
exciting and I=m ready to hit the ground running.@

BACK IN CHARGE PUTS LONGTIME FRIENDS
IN THE WINNER=S CIRCLE by Jessica Martini
When longtime friends and business partners Greg Back and AlLaRose sold their Special Logistics trucking company three yearsago, they decided to give racehorse ownership a try. Thefledgling racing stable made it to the winner=s circle Sundaywhen longshot Back in Charge (Will Take Charge) scored adramatic late-running debut victory at Gulfstream Park. AIt was very exciting for us,@ Back, who watched the race fromhis Texas home said. AWe knew she had it in her, but first timeout, you just never know.@
LaRose was at Gulfstream for the race, but wasn=t quite asoptimistic even as he supported his filly at the windows. AIt was awesome,@ LaRose said of the result. AWe are blessed. It was a really awesome experience.@ Asked if he expected the victory, LaRose admitted, AI did not. She was the longest shot on the board. But I did have $300across on her, so I won $9,000.@ Trainer Ken McPeek purchased Back in Charge on behalf ofBack and LaRose=s C&H Diamond Racing for $250,000 at the2018 Fasig-Tipton July Sale. That purchase price was a far cryfrom the partners= first foray into racing nearly three decadesago with the bargain acquisition of a Texas-bred named Battle ofApollo (Seattle Battle). AIn 1993, I was friends with the track announcer at SamHouston and I was going there every day and wagering withhim,@ LaRose recalled. AHe told me about a horse that was forsale, he was a grandson of Seattle Slew. I bought him sightunseen for $2,500. After I bought him, I called Greg and said, >Ijust bought a horse, do you want half?= He said, >Yeah, I=ll takeit,= instantly. He won his first race out wire-to-wire and we were
hooked. We had him for three years and he paid for himself thewhole time.@ Racing took a backseat to business for a time, however. AGreg and I started a business in 1980 with $5,000 a piece andsold it to J.B. Hunt in 2017,@ LaRose said. ATo treat ourselves, weboth put up $1 million and bought 10 babies with Kenny. Andthat was our gift to ourselves.@ Back added, AWe=ve been partners and friends since the sixthgrade. We decided we wanted to keep our partnership going. And we chose horse racing.@ C&H Diamond Racing--named after wives Carol and Hilda--nowincludes all or part of 15 horses. Also in the group of originalyearling purchases is Morning Gold (Morning Line), acquired for$205,000 at the Fasig July sale, who broke her maiden atSaratoga last August. The filly was fifth in the GII Pocahontas S.and sixth in the GII JPMorgan Chase Jessamine S. AWe have Morning Gold, a very fine filly who is hurt rightnow,@ Back said. AWe have two other 3-year-olds who haven=traced yet. And we just got into a partnership on six or sevenyearlings that we bought at the Keeneland September sale.@ Back continued, AWe are primarily buying yearlings. That=sKenny=s expertise and that=s one of the reasons that we wentwith Kenny, his skills at buying horses.@ LaRose added, AWe just bought six babies with ThreeChimneys and a couple other partners at the last KeenelandSeptember sale. We are in it for a while.@ Asked about his goals for the racing stable, LaRose said he wastrying to keep realistic expectations. AWe=ve had a horse in Dubai already, we are running with all ofthe top horses in the world,@ he said. ASo just to not embarrassourselves and make a good showing, is what I=m looking for.Winning the Derby or something like that would be fantastic, but you know that=s one in a million. So we just want to have funand meet a lot of nice people. People say one in 10 win and webought 16, so she could be our one in 16.@ Cont. p6

While the two Texans might be pragmatic businessmen,
they=ve already broken one of their own rules with Back in
Charge=s name.
AIt=s kind of a funny story because my partner said we couldn=t
name them after any of our family,@ Back said with a laugh. AAnd
when I went to him wanting to name her Back in Charge, he
said, >You can=t do that.= And I said, >I sure can. That=s just a
verb.=@
LaRose responded, AI liked the name, so I let him get away
with it. But you=ll be seeing one LaRose-type in the future.@
As for what is next for Back in Charge, Back said, AMy hope is
that she becomes a stakes quality horse, which after that
performance, I think she=s headed that way. I think she has the
conformation and the build, the speed and the pedigree to be
one. We=re going to have to huddle up with Kenny and see what
he wants to do next, but I=ve got a feeling she will go to some
Grade III or something like that, I would think.@
