On Saturday, January 18th, the Community Engagement Teams from SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park and the Turner AECOM Hunt Joint Venture (THJV) took part in celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the City of Inglewood 37th annual MLK Jr. Celebration, also known as KingFest! The festivities included a morning commemorative program at Faithful Central Bible Church, a parade through downtown Inglewood, and a family festival on Market Street that featured live entertainment, radio personalities, delicious food, crafts and games for the kids, and a multitude of vendors. A special highlight of the day was a memorable performance by rap artist D Smoke, an Inglewood native who gained attention in 2019 after winning the first season of the Netflix show “Rhythm & Flow.” It was a great day to come out and be with the neighborhood to honor and celebrate the iconic civil rights activist and his powerful legacy! Ironworker Local 433 Apprentice Start Date: April 2018 “I absolutely love my job!” After years of working unsatisfying service jobs, Bianca Lopez took a leap of faith and left her job at Home Depot to pursue a career as an ironworker, just like her father. Fast- forward three years, and she can be seen 100 feet in the air “bolting up” spaceframes on the roof of SoFi Stadium—and loving every minute of it. However, it was a challenge to get to these heights—with no trade experience and little support from her family, Bianca had to start with a Google search. She looked up her father’s union, “Local 433,” and drove an hour to the closest union hall in San Bernardino to find work. With a determined spirit, a curious mind, and ironworker blood in her veins, Bianca signed up for the Industry Preparation Program (IPP), an unpaid six-week training bootcamp in La Palma. Of the 42 people signed up, only 21 completed the program. Bianca was the only female to graduate. She officially joined Union Local 433 in February ’18 and moved to Hawthorne to be close to the many construction opportunities in Los Angeles. Bianca now works for Crown Corr at SoFi Stadium and is a second-year apprentice entering her fifth period. She has performed tasks ranging from installing space frames on the roof to building concession stands at the Stadium. She attributes her success to her dedicated and supportive superintendent, Freddie O’Leary, who inspires her to be better every day. TORO ENTERPRISES “It’s been an exciting yet humbling experience to get to work with some of the biggest names in construction.” Established in 1994, Toro Enterprises Inc. is a Hispanic-owned Minority and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (MDBE) based in Oxnard, CA, that specializes in street improvements, earth moving, and underground utilities, as well as structural and architectural concrete. Since March 2018, Toro Enterprises Inc. has quite literally been laying down foundations at SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park. Toro is responsible for constructing sidewalks, curb and gutter, and grating. With the stadium opening in July, Toro is now knee-deep in the Hollywood Park development project. Dylan Gutierrez, a 27-year-old, on-site project manager and superintendent, has been working at SoFi Stadium since April 2019. He loves his job and the positive “let’s do this” energy felt across the massive construction site. Gutierrez expressed that nothing is more valuable than building relationships and learning from other tradespeople onsite. El sábado 18 de enero, los equipos de participación comunitaria de SoFi y Hollywood Park y de Turner AECOM Hunt Joint Venture (THJV) formaron parte de la 37ma celebración anual de la vida y el legado del doctor Martin Luther King, Jr.: en la ciudad de Inglewood, también conocida como KingFest. Los festejos incluyeron un programa matutino conmemorativo en la iglesia Faithful Central Bible, un desfile por el centro de Inglewood y un festival familiar en Market Street que contó con shows en vivo, personalidades de la radio, comida deliciosa, manualidades y juegos para niños y muchísimos vendedores.

Lo más destacado del día fue la presentación del rapero D Smoke, nacido en Inglewood, quien se hizo famoso por el show de Netflix Rhythm + Flow. Fue un día grandioso para salir y estar en el vecindario para honrar y celebrar al icónico activista de los derechos civiles y su poderoso legado.

“¡ Definitivamente, adoro mi trabajo!”

Después de años de hacer labores que no la satisfacían, Bianca Lopez dio un salto de fe y dejó su trabajo en Home Depot para hacer carrera como trabajadora de hierro como su padre. Volvamos rápidamente al presente y es posible que la veas a 30 metros del suelo ajustando paneles de metal en el techo del Estadio SoFi y disfrutando cada minuto de ello.

Sin embargo, fue un desafío llegar a estas alturas—sin experiencia y con poco apoyo de su familia, Bianca tuvo que empezar con una búsqueda en Google. Buscó el sindicato de su padre, Local 433, y condujo en busca de trabajo durante una hora hasta la sede sindical más cercana en San Bernardino. Con un espíritu resuelto, una mente curiosa y sangre de herrero en sus venas, Bianca se inscribió en el Programa de Preparación Industrial (IPP), un taller intensivo de capacitación gratuito de seis semanas en La Palma. De las 42 personas que se inscribieron, solo 21 terminaron el programa. Bianca fue la única mujer que se graduó. Se unió oficialmente al sindicato Local 433 en febrero de 2018 y se mudó a Hawthorne para estar más cerca de las abundantes oportunidades laborales en construcción que había en Los Ángeles.

Actualmente, Bianca trabaja para Crown Corr en el estadio SoFi y es una aprendiz de segundo año que está por comenzar su quinta fase. Ha llevado a cabo tareas que van desde instalar paneles de metal en los techos y construir puestos de venta concesionados en el estadio. Ella atribuye su éxito a su jefe de obra, Freddie O’Leary, quien la inspira a diario para ser mejor.

Establecida en 1994, Toro Enterprises Inc. es una empresa latina constituida por minorías o personas menos favorecidas (MDBE, por sus siglas en inglés) con base en Oxnard, CA, que se especializa en mejorar calles, mover tierras y colocar servicios públicos subterráneos así como también concreto estructural y arquitectónico.

Desde marzo de 2018, Toro Enterprises Inc. Ha, literalmente, fijado las bases del Estadio SoFi y Hollywood Park. Toro es responsable de la construcción de aceras, cordones, canales y rejillas. Con la apertura del estadio en julio, en Toro están ocupadísimos con el desarrollo del proyecto de Hollywood Park.

Dylan Gutierrez, de 27 años, jefe de obra y mánager en el lugar, ha trabajado en el Estadio SoFi desde abril de 2019. Adora su trabajo y la energía por “hacer cosas” que se siente en toda la inmensidad de la construcción. Gutierrez expresó que no hay nada más importante que construir relaciones y aprender de los demás trabajadores del lugar.
