Sofia the First is a 3D computer-animated television series and based on the Disney Princess franchise.

The series stars Ariel Winter as the seven-year-old Sofia, a young girl who becomes a princess when her

mother, Miranda, marries King Roland II of the kingdom of Enchancia.

The series premiered on January 11, 2013 on Disney Channel and Disney Junior. The series pilot episode,

"Once Upon a Princess" premiered on November 18, 2012. On March 5, 2013, Disney Junior

renewed Sofia the First for a second season.[2]

Synopsis[edit]

Season One[edit]

With the help of the three fairies in charge of the Royal Preparatory Academy — Flora, Fauna and

Merryweather of Disney's Sleeping Beauty — and, on occasion, classic Disney Princess characters

including Cinderella, Jasmine, Belle, and several others — Sofia learns that looking like a princess is not all

that hard, but behaving like one must come from the heart. Sofia will wear plenty of pretty sparkly and

colorful gowns and shoes, but the stories will focus on the idea that what makes a real princess is what's on

the inside. The series will highlight character qualities such as kindness, generosity, loyalty, honesty, and

grace. She has the incredibly powerful magical Amulet of Avalor that grants her the ability to talk to and

understand animals, but the amulet is coveted by the evil sorcerer Cedric who wants its great magical

power so he can use it to take over the kingdom as King Cedric the Great.

Season Two[edit]

There will be a second season coming soon. It will consist of twenty-six episodes.

The Floating Palace[edit]

On November 24, 2013, the Disney Junior TV movie Sofia The First: The Floating Palace will air. Sofia's

family go on a royal vacation. While they're there, Sofia befriends a mermaid named Oona. Also, Princess

Ariel makes an appearance.

Reception[edit]

In October 2012, Disney confirmed that Sofia is their first Latina princess. According to a Disney

spokeswoman, "...Sofia's mother, Queen Miranda, was born in a fictitious land, Galdiz, a place with Latin

influences. Miranda met Sofia's father, Birk Balthazar, who hailed from the kingdom of Freezenberg, and

together they moved to Enchancia, where Sofia was born." As a result, some people have criticized a lack

of cultural signifiers or ethnic identity in Sofia's character.[3]

Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess premiered on Disney Channel on November 18, 2012, and had 5.2

million viewers.[4]

Merchandise[edit]

A range of Sofia the First merchandise has been launched by the Disney Store in the US, including

costumes, books, toy figures, and homeware.[5] Products have also been launched in the UK.[6]
