Michigan leading the way with 100 followed by Alabama (98), Florida (96) and Georgia Tech (95). Linfi eld has the most wins in NCAA Division III with 87 since the beginning of the 2010 campaign.

Mustangs in the NFCA Top 25Midwestern State has spent the

last 25 reporting periods ranked in the National Fast-pitch Coaches’ Asso-ciation Top 25 including 20 of those weeks ranked in the Top 10. The Mustangs topped out at No. 2 fi rst on April 6 where they remained for two weeks. The ranking bested the program’s previous best coming into season as MSU was No. 5 at the close of the 2010 regular season . For the second consecutive season, the Mustangs are carry a No. 5 ranking into the NCAA Division II postseason.

How the North was won, Part 5 Midwestern State claimed its fi fth Lone Star Conference North Division title in its eight years of competition by rolling to a 13-4 mark against the divison. The Mustangs also claimed divisional titles in its fi rst year of play in 2004 then repeated in 2006 and 2007 when MSU also claimed its two Lone Star Conference championships before reclaiming the title last season.

MSU made quick move to LSC elite Just in its eighth year of existence, the Midwestern State softball program has quickly became a member of the elite in the Lone Star Conference and South Central Region. The Mustangs have claimed fi ve North Division titles, two Lone Star Conference championships and has entered the postseason as the region’s top seed four times. Midwestern is among only three LSC teams to reel off more than 250 victories over the last seven years. The Mustangs, who have won 325 games (40.6 per season), trail only Angelo State (365/45.6 per season).

Mustangs under TigertBrady Tigert has turned the Mid-

western State softball program into a conference power in his eight years as

the program’s sole architect. This season, the Mustangs are once again poised to make a splash on the regional and national scene as Tigert has guided the team to 101 wins over the past two seasons as the Mustangs staked claim to its fi rst fi rst-place vote in the National Fast-pitch Coaches’ Association where it held a No. 2 ranking for two weeks. Midwestern has compiled a 327-135 mark (.708) in those eight sea-sons as Tigert has led the Mustangs to NCAA Division II South Central Region postseason play in seven of the eight seasons.

Tigert claimed his sixth LSC divisonal coach of the year honor this season which rates as the most by a single coach since the league adopted softball in 1997. He is one of only two coaches to win top coaching honors in each of the North and South divisions as earned accolades at Texas A&M-Kingsville in 2000 and fi ve times at MSU (2004, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011).

MSU in the postseasonMidwestern State battled to within

a game of landing in the Lone Star Conference Championship fi nals last weekend in Durant. MSU rolled to an 8-0 win over Texas Woman’s in the opener before falling to East Central 9-7 in semifi nal round. The Mustangs battled for wins over Cameron (10-2) and Angelo State (8-3) before falling to West Texas A&M 6-3 in the loser’s bracket fi nal. Midwestern is making its seventh appearance in the NCAA II South Cen-tral Regionals. The Mustangs are 8-15 in NCAA II South Central Regional play advanc-ing to the Super Regional round in each of the last two seasons.

Five Mustangs named all-region Midwestern State senior Brittney Tanner headlined a group of fi ve Mustangs on the Daktronics All-South Central Region squad.

Tanner (29-7, 1.46 ERA, 319 K, 13 ShO) earned Pitcher of the Year hon-ors, while junior third baseman Mal-lory Mooney (.361, 17 2B, 13 HR, 62 RBI) and sophomore outfi elder Elena Bennett (.437, 55 R, 39 SB) joined her on the fi rst team. Senior pitcher Kristina Gutierrez

Scouting the Lady Buffs No. 2-seeded West Texas A&M has rallied to force if necessary games each of the last two weekends. Two weeks ago, the Lady Buffs claimed their fi rst Lone Star Confer-ence championship after falling in the winner’s bracket fi nal to East Central then rallied to defeat Midwestern State before taking two games from ECU to clinch the title.

Last week, WT stumbled in its NCAA II South Central Region #2 opener at home 2-1 to St. Mary’s. The Lady Buffs regrouped to eliminate Missouri Western and St. Mary’s on Saturday before rolling past Nebraska-Omaha twice on Sunday to claim a regional championship. West Texas A&M has won 13 of its last 15 games with its lone losses coming to East Central and St. Mary’s since dropping two straight to Tarleton State and NAIA Lubbock Christian on April 23 and 26. The Lady Buffs are paced Daktron-ics All-South Central Region fi rst-team-er Kim LeComte (.385, 13 2B, 7 HR, 66 RBI, 29 SB) and second-teamer Kasey Henderson (.404, 13 2B, 4 3B, 1 HR, 26 RBI, 51 SB) at the plate. The Mustangs plated an unearned run on an Elena Bennett infi eld single in the fi fth before Kim Jerrick crushed her ninth homer of the season in the sixth inning to account for all of the scoring in the contest.

Lady Buffs 6, Mustangs 3 (5/6/01) Kaitlyn Witte’s three-run homer on an 0-2 pitch with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted No. 17 West Texas A&M to a 6-3 in over No. 3 Midwestern State at the LSC Championship. The homer spoiled a three run comeback for MSU as Mallory Mooney connected on a 2-run homer in the sith and Alyson Reynolds connected on a game-tying solo shot in the seventh.

Total Bases

Around the horn Midwestern State’s senior pitching combination of Brittney Tanner and Kris-

tina Gutierrez have combined for a Lone Star Conference record 25 shutouts this season. Brittney Tanner has notched 13 shutouts and Gutierrez has 12 of her own to rank second and third in NCAA Division II behind Quincy’s Tori Bun-zell, who has notched 14 blankings. Tanner needs one more shutout to match former Southeastern Oklahoma State standouts Starla Payne and Christina Cearley who had 14 shutouts in 2000 and 2003, respectively.

Senior pitcher Brittney Tanner became the third Midwestern State pitcher to be named Lone Star Conference North Division Pitcher of the Year. The Burk-burnett product led the LSC in wins (29), shutouts (13), strikeouts (319) and ERA (1.46). Tanner owns MSU top single season marks with 13 shutouts and 319 strikeouts. She needs one win to pass former standout pitcher Brittany Willson who won 29 games in 2006.

Senior pitcher Kristina Gutierrez garnerd All-LSC North second-team honors after delivering a breakout campaign in the circle. The Pearland native is tied for second in the nation with teammate Brittney Tanner with 12 shutouts on her way to an impressive 21-4 record. She rated second in the conference with a 1.57 ERA and fanned 232 batters to just 24 walks. She has allowed 2-or-fewer hits in 11 of her 27 starts and struck out 10-or-more on 10 occasions.

Sophomore center fi elder Elena Bennett garnered All-LSC North fi rst-team honors for the second straight season after leading the league with a .443 batting average. The Carrollton native became the fi rst player in MSU history to amass 80 hits in a sea-son at the LSC Championships last weekend and now has notched 87 safeties this season. Bennett needs seven more hits to surpass former Angelo State star Alexis Wing (93 hits in 2003) to become the LSC’s all-time single season hits leader.

The 2011 Mustangs have clubbed the most home runs in program history by far this season with 56 which easily surpasses last season’s total of 40. Junior third baseman Mallory Mooney leads the way and launched her 13th homer of the season to pass former standout Rachael Jackson to set MSU’s single sea-son record. Jackson had 12 bombs in 2005. Senior Alyson Reynolds smashed four homers at the LSC Championships has 10 homers, while freshman Kim Jerrick set an MSU freshman record with 10 homers. Senior Amanda Potys-man also has nine homers.

Brady Tigert leads the Midwestern State University softball program into its eighth season in 2011. Tigert has developed the Mustangs into an established national contender out of the always tough NCAA Division II’s South Central Region. MSU, which has advanced into regional postseason in seven of its eight years of its existence, claimed its fi rst NCAA II postseason victory in 2007 when the Mus-tangs upended Texas A&M-Kingsville 7-3 before break-ing through for a South Central Region championship in 2010. Tigert, who has constructed a 327-135 (.708) record since starting the MSU program in 2004, carries a 437-189 (.698) mark through 11 collegiate seasons including a 110-54 ledger from 2001-03 at Texas A&M-Kingsville where he led the 2002 Javelinas to a 46-18 record and a trip to the NCAA II South Central Regional fi nals. Tigert’s father, John, was one of the most successful high school coaches in the state of New Mexico where in 20 seasons as head coach at Carlsbad High School, his squads won 11 state championships and were runners-up on four other occasions. Tigert’s other coaching experience includes stints as head coach at Ryan High School in Denton, Texas (1999); as assistang coach at the University of Oregon (1997); as a head coach at Artesia (New Mexico) High School (1996) and as an assistant coach at New Mexico State University for three seasons (1993-95).
