Consult Appendix A for all referenced documentation and

availability.

Joint Methods

For secure joints, only use pipe and fittings from the Marley

Soil, Waste and Vent System.

The injection moulded B-ring push socket (See Fig. 1) and the solvent weld joint are used to establish joints through out the Marley Soil, Waste and Vent System.

Fig. 1

B-Ring seal

Seal retainer The B-ring push socket allows for thermal movement within the installed materials to take place. Typical installations would have these joints or pipe anchored at predetermined points, thereby allowing the joint to control expansion and contraction within the pipe work.

Pipe CuttingWhen cutting pipe to length, use a fine tooth wood saw, hacksaw or suitable plastic pipe cutter, taking care to cut the pipe squarely. Failure to do this may cause some difficulty at a later stage when joining. See Fig. 2. The cut pipe end must now be chamfered using a file or one of the special hand tools developed for shaping plastics. Remove all swarf from the cut pipe ends and ensure that the pipe ends are clean and free of dirt. See Fig. 3.

JointsMarley B-ring Socket

Joints

Pipe ends must be

chamfered. Pipe ends,

sockets and seals must be

clean and free from swarf

or grit.

Mark the insertion depth on the pipe end (or on the spigot ended fitting). This may be determined by measuring the maximum insertion depth on the socket fitting less an allowance for thermal movement. A 6 metre length of uPVC pipe will expand 10mm when the temperature (thermal) increases by 25° C. Transfer this measurement onto the pipe circumference using a suitable marker. Fig. 5.Ensure that the B-ring seal is correctly positioned in the socket recess of the fitting.Apply a small amount of Marley Lube to the chamfered pipe end and to the seal. Fig. 6 &7.

Repair Socket 110mm (SE402)The repair socket (SE402) has been designed to permit additional branch connections or repair to an existing soil and vent line, without causing major and costly alteration.

Pipe ends must be chamfered. Pipe ends, sockets and seals must

be clean and free from

swarf or grit.

RepairsYou’ll need 2 repair sockets (SE402) and a section of Marley Soil and Vent pipe long enough to repair the damaged section. The first task concerns the accurate marking of the portion of damaged pipe to be cut and removed from the system. Carefully cut away the damaged section with a hacksaw (fine tooth saw) or suitable pipe cutter. Cuts should be made square to the pipe axis. Chamfer and deburr the pipe ends. Fig. 10 and 11.Measure the length of pipe required to repair the damaged section and cut a new section of pipe for this purpose. Cuts should be made square to the pipe axis. Chamfer and deburr the pipe ends. Fig. 12.Determine the insertion depth mark from the repair socket by halving the total socket length. Fig. 13.Using a suitable marker, transfer this length onto both ends of the repair pipe section. Fig. 14

Apply a small amount of Marley Lube to the chamfered pipe ends and to repair socket seals.Insert a repair socket to the fullest extent over each end of the repair pipe section (Fig. 15). Alternatively insert a repair socket to the fullest extent over each end of the existing pipe line. The repair pipe section is then inserted into the gap. All that remains to complete the installation is to slide the sockets over the ends up to the insertion depth marks. Fig. 16 and 17.

New branch connectionsFor new branch connections, cut two small sections of soil and vent pipe long enough to form a spigot ended branch section. Prepare the sections, taking care to chamfer and deburr all pipe ends. Establish the spigot ended branch section. Fig. 18 and 19.Now measure the piece from spigot end to spigot end. Fig. 20.Transfer this dimension to the existing pipe section and carefully cut away with a hacksaw or other fine tooth saw. Chamfer and deburr both cut ends. Marley Strap-on

saddle (WAB 5)The Marley strap-on saddle (WAB 5) utilises a B-ring push socket joint for the 50mm waste branch connection to a 110mm soil and vent pipeline.

Sockets, seals and

solvent weld joint areas

must be clean and free

from swarf or grit.

Place the saddle over the pipe to receive the branch connection. Place the saddle such that the “flow direction” markings on the WAB5 fitting correspond to the actual direction of flow on the main line. See Fig. 27.Align the saddle into the correct position and mark this position using a suitable marker; the saddle flange outline and the required hole in the main line. See Fig. 28 and 29.Remove the saddle completely for the drilling of the hole.Drill the hole in the main line as marked using a 50mm hole saw. Fig. 30.Refit the saddle and verify joint alignment. The flange lip should fit inside the drilled hole; ream as required using a half-round or round file. Take care to leave enough material on the main pipe line for the establishment of a secure solvent weld joint against the flanged area of the saddle.

Solvent Weld Fittings

Pipe ends must be

chamfered. Pipe ends and

sockets must be clean and

free from swarf or grit.

Before jointing, pipe ends and fittings should be assembled and checked for position and alignment. Use a suitable marker to mark:

The insertion depth on the pipe ends. Fig. 31.The joint alignment position on pipe ends and fittings. Fig. 32.

Disassemble the joint and ensure that all pipe ends and sockets are clean and free from swarf or grit.Coat both surfaces (outside of the pipe ends up to the insertion depth marking and inside of the fitting socket) with Solvent weld and join together without delay. Take care to push the pipe firmly into the fitting to the full insertion depth, taking care to align the joint as marked. Fig. 33.Remove surplus solvent weld immediately with a clean, dry cloth.

Pipe Clip Fixing

Pipe clips are designed

to engage on to fittings as

anchor points to control

thermal movement within the

system.

Pipe clips are also

used on the barrel of the

pipe to support and guide

the pipe during thermal

movement.

A correctly fixed soil stack (of 160mm or 110mm) with joints assembled as illustrated in Fig. 34, allows thermal movement to take place without affecting the performance of the system.

Vertical pipe work should be supported with pipe clips at a maximum of 2m centres (dimension A). Horizontal pipe work should be supported at approximately 1m centres (dimension B).

Pipe clips for waste systems (40mm & 50mm pipe) joining into soil pipes should be positioned as follows (Fig. 35):

Vertical pipe work should be secured with pipe clips at a maximum of 1.25m spans (dimension A).Horizontal pipe work should be supported at approximately 0.75m spans (dimension B).

Multi-storey

InstallationsWith a tall building (30 metres or more in height), pipe movement under temperature changes should be controlled at each floor.

This may be established by securing at least one socket with a pipe clip at each floor. Quite often the socket of a pipe length may be located in a solid floor. In this case, wrap the socket and joint with a layer of building paper (Fig. 36, A) and back fill with concrete. This point will now act as the anchor in controlling thermal movement.

Guide sleeves (Fig. 36, B) should be installed between floors at spans not exceeding 2 metres (Fig. 36, dimensions C) to support and permit clearance between the pipework and the structure.

Connection to WC

outletsThe introduction of uPVC soil systems has created many new opportunities for simplified connections between WC outlets and the soil pipe. The most effective of these employ a synthetic or natural rubber gasket, housed in a moulded socket giving a push-fit con-nection.

The Marley WC Connector has a natural rubber seal ring which when lubricated with soft soap can be easily slid over the outlet tail of a WC, establishing a flexible but water and air tight joint (Fig. 37). The other end of the WC connector is a socket for solvent welding or rubber B-Ring socket to the spigot end of a Marley uPVC soil pipe. Fig. 37

Flashing pipe work through roofsWith the advent of vent valves, vent stacks no longer need to pass through the roof covering. Design exceptions may exist and where pipelines pass through flat or pitched roofs, it is necessary to provide some form of flashing to prevent rain from gaining access into the building. This is normally best achieved with the use of a flashing specially fabricated from metal sheeting. The flat base is weathered or bonded to the roof finish in the conventional way, depending upon the roof material. The gap that inevitably arises between the pipe and the prefabricated flashing may be weathered by the application of a proprietary sealing compound.
