The UK is still united but policy is disconnected, we’re about to embark on the most expensive generation project any country has ever contemplated with a 35-year, index-linked guarantee but we face a cut of up to 87% in subsidies for renewables. And as green legislation was more broadly slashed, we saw Drax pulling out of carbon capture. For us, the solar industry, we need to work together in the face of this.

We’re an industry which employs tens of thousands of people, companies full of strivers so here at Solar Media, we’re already seeing lots of innovation. I’ve been speaking to installers and developers over the last few weeks and a lot of them are surprised I’m calling – they’ve been looking at diversification since 2011! We’ve seen a wealth of lobbying over the last few weeks and strengthening of opposition; from the green swell before the election and Labour’s renaissance in September, culminating in Nandy’s claim that energy policy in the UK is a scandal and the UK’s CBI asserting that international credibility is reliant on consistent domestic policy.

New opportunities

But the UK is a little island and one thing that was clear from your feedback in 2014 is that you wanted to meet people who would help you access international opportunities, new rooftop business and see how you can work with new technologies.

As I write this at the end of September 2015 (print deadlines) the messages about solar’s essential place in a modern energy mix has never been more obvious and clear. Just yesterday, the governor of the bank of England, Mark Carney stood in front of an assorted selection of insurers and reminded them about their increasing liabilities in the face of climate change. The government has set up ‘Flood Re’ because who else will insure the UK’s homes and businesses against increasing natural catastrophes? Sir David Attenborough has been lobbying for a programme of R&D equivalent to the Apollo programme to focus on renewable energy. $2.6 trillion has been divested from fossil fuels globally, which is almost half of the IMF estimate of global fossil fuel subsidies: $5.3 trillion. And COP 21 is on our doorstep. Will 2015 be a decisive year?

What a year! Last year, in this introduction, we wrote that British

solar energy has gone from strength to strength with a cumulative

installed figure of 5GW. We’re now at over 8GW with much more

to be installed before January 2016. Whatever the political rhetoric,

solar isn’t going away. But it’s been a heck of a year!

Global opportunities you’ll see on your programme this week

In India, Modi has an ambitious goal of 175

GW of renewables. Ghana, Nigeria and Algeria

all have national action plans, feed-in tariffs

and need experienced engineers and project

managers. Make sure you attend sessions

We’re working with IBESA in 2015 who have

put together a fantastic programme dedicated

to storage. The Energy Plus Theatre is the

also delighted to be working with RES, Future

Transport Systems and REA in the same theatre

on the 14th for a focus session on UK storage
