Solar Industry In India
Solar Cell and Module manufacture is the main story
Two ways to harness solar power
Solar Power is concentrated and converted to thermal energy which is converted to electric energy
P N P N
Solar Power is converted to electricity using PV (Photovoltaic) effect

Solar PV: the Value Chain
Solar ModulesSolar Cells Silicon Ingot Silicon Wafers
This part of the chain is Oligopolistic. Increase in the poly-silicon prices (200% in 2 years) has been a key issue in the industry. Prices have plummeted this year

Solar PV Companies in India Company Location(s) Products
Moser Baer PV Bangalore PV modules (both crystalline and thin film – amorphous and CIGS)
Has also invested in Stion (a thin film company), SolFocus (CPV company), Solaria (high efficiency cells)
Titan Energy Systems
Hyderabad PV modules (both crystalline and thin film – amorphous and CIGS) and systems
Photon Energy Systems
Hyderabad Solar PV Modules & Systems . Also Solar thermal products
Solar semiconductors Hyderabad Solar crystalline modules
BHEL Various Solar modules and systems
Companies are playing in the fragmented part of the industry chain with Moser Baer trying to make some serious technology investments
Solar Systems
“solar systems” is really applications! In India the story is largely around smaller
applications
Solar Applications
• Solar Lanterns/Lamps
• Solar Lights
• Solar Thermal
The case for Solar Lanterns/Lamps • 1.6 billion people in the world have no access to electricity:
– 25% of them in India alone
• Products are both handheld and headlamps
Lead to improvement of educational levels
Leads to improved mobility in inaccessible areas
Leads to empowerment of women
How does a solar lantern work?
• Typically consists of: – A rechargeable battery– A photovoltaic solar panel– CFL/LEDs – A plastic body
• It works by: – Solar energy is collected by the panel and the battery is charged– The battery size is typically enough for about 4-6 hour lighting– The light is equivalent to a 40W-60W light
Design innovation in solar lanterns has been largely around the capacity of the panel, the size of the battery, use of CFLs/LEDs to impact usability and life of unit.
How do Solar street lights work?
• Typically consists of: – A photovoltaic solar panel– A rechargeable battery– A charge controller cum inverter– CFL/LED lamp
• It works by: – DC electric current is produced from the panel– The charge control circuit controls the voltage and prevents damage
How does solar thermal work?
It works by: – Solar energy is collected in Collector – Thermic fluid (water or antifreeze) is heated in the adjoining tubes – The fluid can be used directly (if water) or used to heat water in another pipe – The water can be circulated via pumps (active systems) or by gravity (passive)
• Collectors are of two types:– Flat plate collectors (A weatherproofed, insulated box containing a black metal
absorber sheet with built in pipes )– Evacuated Tube (These collectors have multiple evacuated glass tubes which
heat up solar absorbers and, ultimately, solar working fluid)
