SOLAR POWER is therefore
one of mans easily
available resource and canprovide an almost endless
supply of energy.
Alternative energies are the only way to go further to combat the fast
depletion of our current resources and in the process also to stop
causing irreparable damage to the planet we live on.
This presentation is aimed at giving you a basic introduction to the
concept of Solar power, and general methods adopted in the usage of
the same. 00

What is SOLAR POWER?
SOLAR power is in plain terms, the SUNsenergy harnessed and converted to
POWER through various devices.
HOW is it done?
There are a number of different methods that can be used to make
solar energy work.
In the broadest sense, nearly all energy on Earth can be technicallyattributed to solar energy, but most of it would be hard to harness for
human use.
It is the implementation of technology such as heat collectors andphotovoltaic systems that make solar energy work for humans in ways
that are practical. Some of this technology is implemented on an industrial scale, while
other technology is designed specifically for personal use.

Energy from the sun can be
converted into solar power intwo ways.
The first way involves the use of
solarthermalapplications.
Solar thermal applications usethe sun's energy to provide
direct heat to air or liquid.Solarthermal panelscan be
used for both residential andlarger-scale applications.
EXAMPLE: Solar water heatersused in residential applicationsoften take advantage of heat
collectors.

Solar cell is great material, which is mainly made from Silicon, andwhen sunlight shines on the solar cell, it'll start to generate electricity.
If you put many solar cells together, they will generate enoughelectricity power for a familys daily use.
The electricity generated can be used directly, stored locally or fedinto an existing electricity grid.

To absorb the highest possibleamount of solar energy, solarpanels must be pointed at the
sun.

WHERE can it be used?
For industrial solar production, heat collectors seem to be where most of
the focus is.
These systems are often placed in lines and look somewhat like curvedtroughs.
The suns rays hit the highly reflective surface of the troughs, which
concentrate the heat on a conduit located just in front of the reflectors.
Inside that tube is a liquid that is heated to very high levels, often morethan 5,400 degrees Fahrenheit (more than 3,000 degrees Celsius).
A conversion process is still needed to make this type of solar energy
work, however. The heated liquid is then transferred to another location, where it
produces steam.
The steam is then used to turn turbines, which is directly responsible formaking the electricity. This electricity is then placed on a grid so it can
be delivered to the end user.

Many people use solar power by
harnessing the sun's energy to light theirhomes and to run different appliances.
Not only is it economical but sustainable .
WHERE can it be used?
07
FOR HOMES
There are a number of ways you can
use solar power in the home. Theutility bills for these zero-energyhomes have cut power consumptionby 50 to 70%.

This is becoming an attractive proposition for a
growing number of people.Once thought of as an idea only found in
science fiction, solar power is now becoming avery real prospect.

Indias National SolarMission, which envisages an installed solar
generation capacity of 20,000 MW by 2020, 1, 00,000 MW by 2030 andof 2, 00,000 MW by 2050.
It is common knowledge that solar power costs more; what is not wellknown is that it costs much more than coal-based (or natural gas
based) electricity.
Coal-based and natural gas-based power cost anywhere between Rs2 and 3 per KWh; wind-based power costs slightly more around Rs.
3.5-4.
Solar-based powercurrently costsover Rs 15 per KWh thisisforsolar PV. Solarthermalcostsabout 2 rupeesless per kWh.

Applications and Hybrid Systems
If both wind and solar power are combined,
energy systems will be consistent and can go offthe grid faster.
Also, the
loads theycan take will
be evenlydistributed
throughoutthe year
irrespectiveof the
season.

In the latest budget for 2010-11, the government has announced anallocation of 10 billion towards the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar
Mission and the establishment of a Clean Energy Fund.
It's an increase of 3.8 billion from the previous budget.
Also budget has also encouraged private solar companies by reducing
customs duty on solar panels by 5 percent and exempting excise dutyon solar photovoltaic panels.
This is expected to reduce costs of the roof-top solar panel installation
by 15- 20 percent.
