WHAT IS SOLAR PV?

1. Solar PanelsSolar PV panels convert sunlight into

Direct Current (DC). They are very light weight, have no moving parts and can

be installed on most roofs.

2. Bracket SystemThe panels are anchored to the roof (slate or tiles) by specially designed brackets which are attached to the

rafters. The panels and brackets are designed to withstand harsh weather

conditions.

3. InverterThe DC power generated by the solar

panels is converted to Alternating Current (AC) through an inverter which

is generally installed in the attic. It is Alternating Current which powers your

home.

4. The ElectricityAn inverter is connected to the fuse

board for distribution to electric appliances. When a battery system or

diverter is not installed, surplus energy is fed back to the national grid (ESB).

5. The Diverter UnitWhen solar power is being generated and not consumed in real time, it nat-urally flows back to the grid and is lost forever. A diverter, diverts this excess

power to the immersion heater to heat water in the home.

6. The BatteryStores the free electricity generated

during the day, so that it can be used to power the home at night or on

cloudy days.

This is a snapshot of one of our customers Solar PV systems performance on the 25th of February

2021.

This customer installed a 16 Panel 5.4 kW system with a 7.5 kW Sonnen battery.

Even as early as February this customer was producing 100% of their overall consumption

from Solar PV or 21.4 kWh of electricity. 11kW of electricity was consumed by the customer on

the day and 8.4kW of electricity was stored in the battery for use at a later stage.

WHY CHOOSE SOLAR?

Having looked at the return on investment and the carbon reductions I felt it made sense to install Solar PV. We recently purchased an electric car and I wanted to charge it using a renewable energy source. My house has a large South, South-West facing roof with no shading that made it suitable for Solar PV. Installing Solar PV helped bring our BER rating up 3 levels.

WHAT PRODUCTS WERE USED?

I installed 15 Q-Cell panels due to the warranty and efficiency of the panels. I also opted for a Sonnen battery system to increase my overall energy yield and because our energy usage is highest at night/evening time. The battery also really improved our BER rating and the information available on the app is great.

HOW WAS THE SYSTEM INSTALLED?

The installation was completed in 2 days.

As my house is old, quite a lot of project planning took place in advance leading to a very smooth installation. Swyft set me up on the app and commissioned the system before doing a full walk-through of the system. Swyft also completed all of the grant paperwork.

GOAL:Peter’s goal was to reduce his electricity bill, in particular his new electric vehicle charging costs, while also improving his home’s BER rating.

GRANT: Peter availed of a €3,000 government grant through the SEAI which was managed on his behalf by Swyft Energy. €2,400 of the grant was allocated towards solar panels and €600 was towards the battery. The grant was processed by the SEAI and in Peter’s account within a few weeks.

Case Study

We had a customer recently who installed a 16 panel 5.4 kW Solar PV system with battery storage that will generate estimated savings of €1,400 per year.

The gross cost of the system was €14,000 less a €3,000 SEAI grant which left a balance of €11,000 to be paid to Swyft Energy.

The customer applied for finance on the €11,000 which resulted in 36 monthly payments of approximately €358.

The customer was approved for finance within 10 minutes.


GRANTSThe sustainable energy authority of Ireland (SEAI) are currently offering home owners grants of up to €3,000 towards the installation of a Solar PV and battery storage system.

The following stipulations apply:• The dwelling must be built and occupied before 2011• SEAI have not previously provided support for solar PV system at that

address• The homes energy performance following installation of solar panels

must be BER C3 or better• You must apply for the grant before any work commences and get

POTENTIAL EFFECTS OF A SWYFT PACKAGE ON YOUR HOMES BER RATING & LIST PRICE.An empirical study conducted by Trinity College Dublin, Department of Economics on the The Price Effect of Building Energy Ratings in the Dublin Residential Marketbetween 2009 - 2014 found that a one-point improvement in the BER scale yields a list price increase of 1% - suggesting energy efficiency has a significant, positive relationship with property list prices.

All Swyft Energy Solar installations come with fully integrated heating controls where possible. At present there is €1,200 in Government grants and carbon credits available to help cover the installation costs. Fully Integrated heating controls will save you upto 20% on your heating bills, lower your carbon footprint and as you can see from the above example can improve your BER rating and increase the list price of your property.

The above example is based on a 3 bedroom semi-detached property based in Dublin. Following the installation of fully integrated Hive smart heating controls combined with 6 panel solar pv system the properties BER

rating was improved from a C2 to a B2 rating. This resulted in a 2 point improvement on the BER scale equivalent to a potential 2% increase in the list price of the property or €7K.

NEED TO KNOW MORE?HOW SOLAR PV PANELS WORK?Solar panels convert sunlight into DC, and the inverter converts this DC into AC for use in your home. The solar system will be connected to your main electricity panel (‘fuse-board’).

WHAT IS A BATTERY STORAGE SYSTEM?A battery system stores energy generated by your solar panels during the day for use later in the evening or nighttime when there is no sunlight. The battery system can also be programmed to recharge itself on lower cost electric night rates resulting in further savings and lower bills.

CAN I MONITOR THE SOLAR POWER MY SYSTEM IS PRODUCING?Yes, once your Solar PV system is installed, you will be set up with free lifetime monitoring. You can track your solar yield and usage by day, week or year.

IS THERE A GRANT FOR HOME BATTERIES?Yes there is currently a grant of €600 available for qualifying homes. Battery storage prices start from approx €4,500 net of grants, including installation. Eligible Swyft Energy customers can take advantage of our payment plans.

DO SOLAR PANELS WORK ON RAINY OR CLOUDY DAYS?Even in so-called low-light conditions, on cloudy or rainy days, or at dusk, Q CELLS solar systems keep producing high output. It is here where the solar modules from Q CELLS score top marks, because they are built for real-life conditions and are recognized for their particularly good perfor-mance with diffuse light. Even at a very low irradiation of 200 W/m², the current product generation of Q Cell solar modules still achieves 98 % of its original efficiency; which means a lot higher returns for you with a minimal amount of sunshine. At radiation values between 400 and 900 W/m² efficien-cies over 100 % of the nominal value can be achieved. These results have also been confirmed by the independent Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE.

IS MY ROOF SUITABLE FOR SOLAR PV?Basically, a solar system is applicable everywhere where at least 10 m² of roof area is available. Next to the geographic location, the amount of output of solar electricity is dependent on several factors; the orientation (North, South, East or West), the inclination angle of the roof and of course on the size of the solar system. WHY ARE WARRANTY PERIODS IMPORTANT?Solar PV is a long-term investment that you need to protect. IS IT POSSIBLE TO STORE THE ELECTRICITY TO USE AT NIGHT?Yes you can, provided you install a battery storage system. Battery storage systems store excess power locally for consumption later in the day or at night. We advise all our customers installing more than 6/7 solar panels to install a battery storage system. The SEAI also stipulates if you are installing more than 2KW of solar power you will need to install a battery in order to avail of the grant.
