The Point

Dear Parents, In our endeavour as a school community to provide a supportive learning environment we need to identify ways to best support our students in their daily challenges. For this reason and with the backing of the school’s P&C, we successfully applied to have a chaplain / student welfare officer appointed to our school and it is with pleasure that I welcome Mrs Joy Shotter to SPPS as our school chaplain / student welfare officer. Schools recognise that in addition to developing children academically, we need to also support their social and emotional development. Indeed, it is for this reason we introduced the You Can Do It! program several years ago. With Mrs Shotter joining us as chaplain / student welfare officer, we are able to extend the way and manner in which we support our students. Mrs Shotter has included a brief introductory letter about herself and the nature of her role at the school later in this newsletter.

Happy & Safe Feet Included with this newsletter is a letter written by one of our Kindergarten student’s Chloe regarding an improvement she would like to see at SPPS. Like others, Chloe would like to have a path constructed between the Kindergarten classrooms and the Games Court as the current path becomes very busy at recess & lunch. As you will read in Chloe’s letter you can help by voting for her idea. Follow the instructions on how to vote and you may help our school win a grant to fund the project.

Meaningful for All Having spoken to many students following their Life Education lesson all have commented on how fun and meaningful their activity was. Life Education is a vital program offered all over Australia and is very highly regarded. I trust that all of our children enjoyed and learnt a lot from their visit.

Reach It’s time to celebrate the artistic talents of so many of our children by attending the 2012 Tomaree Music Festival (TMF). The theme for this year’s TMF is Reach, which will see our students singing and dancing next Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Stage 3 Camp Today, nearly one hundred very excited Year 5 & 6 students and four very brave teachers departed for

their annual camp. Students and teachers will be having an outdoor education experience at Morisset where they will undertake activities such as: rock climbing, archery, flying fox, canoeing, orienteering, giant swing and the high ropes course. I’m sure the students and teachers will have a great experience as they enjoy the challenging activities. Stage 3 will include a report and photos in future newsletters.

New Chaplaincy Role Soldiers Point Public School has been successful in

receiving a grant from the Commonwealth

Government as part of the National School Chaplaincy

and Student Welfare Support Program. This grant

enables us to provide chaplaincy support to the

students, staff and families of our school. The

funding will provide a Chaplain for 10 hours a week in

our school.

What will our Chaplain do?

# Assisting in the development and continuation

of the schools welfare programs.

# Network with welfare services, local churches

and other agencies in the local community to

provide a broad range of support services to

the school community.

# Work with the School Learning Support Team

to facilitate student wellbeing.

# Facilitate groups, events and activities to

support emotional and spiritual wellbeing with

voluntary student participation.

# Support staff at school camps, excursions

and other activities as required.

# Provide pastoral care and personal assistance

for students, staff and parents of the school

community regardless of religious or cultural

background in coordination with the school

counsellor and other support staff.

A school chaplain is expected to respect the range of

religious views and affiliations, and cultural traditions

in the school community, and be approachable by

students of all faiths.

Our chaplain, Joy Shotter is at the school Mondays

and Thursdays all day and half days on Tuesdays and

Wednesdays. She will be available to meet individually

with students with parental permission, and other

members of the school community to provide support

and guidance regarding relationships, life choices,

values and spiritual matters.

Please feel free to contact Joy at the school office

if you have any questions.

MUSICA VIVA: On Thursday Week 1, Term 3 Soldiers Point

Public school participated in Musica Viva. The chosen

band for this year was B’Tutta, they are a percussion

band with a high amount of skill. They performed many

entertaining songs which got the audience participating

in many different ways. Some of the students were

clapping, while others were singing and even teachers

got to go up on stage! Songs that B’Tutta played

included Celebrate, Asa and Cinquillo. Overall, we all

had a great afternoon at Musica Viva and hope to have

as much fun next time. We would like to thank Mrs Hunt

for organizing such a fun afternoon.

HOCKEY: Last week was a big week for hockey at Soldiers

Point. On Tuesday we played our first schools hockey

knockout game against Tinonee Public. The team played

extremely well and we cruised to a 6-1 victory.

On Friday we played our second game on the astro turf at

Cessnock against Nulkaba Public. Again the team played like

champions and at full time the game was drawn at 2 all.

Then we had to play extra time with only nine players. Then

another lot of extra time with just seven players but neither

team scored. Finally we had to keep playing with only a

goalkeeper and four players on each team. Nulkaba

unfortunately scored a goal and won the game. It was the

longest game any of us have ever played.

Thank you to Mrs Hunt for organising our games and to all

the parents for training us, umpiring and taking us to the

fields. Lucas

Touch: The Soldiers Point boys’ touch team had good wins in Rounds 1 & 2 of the 2012 PSSA Knockout defeating Shoal Bay PS 4-2 and Tomaree PS 2-0. In Round 3, however, they came up against a very strong team in Anna Bay PS who defeated our team 7-1. Well done to the boys and thank you to the parents who joined us for training and supported us at the games.

Rugby league: Our school rugby league team participated in the 2012 Jarrod Mullen Cup last Thursday at Salamander Sporting Complex. The team consisted of 17 players from Years 4, 5 and 6. On the day we had a win against St Michaels (12-8), a loss against St Phillips (8-4)

and a win against Shoal Bay (20-4). The boys played with tremendous spirit and sportsmanship in all three games. Thank you to all the parents / grandparents who came along to support the boys. Photo of Fionn running the ball with Joe in

support.

LETTER FROM CHLOE

Hello, my name is Chloe Richards and I am in KS. I love my school very much but sometimes wish I was the koala in the tree so I didn't have to climb the steps to get to my favourite play area. Last week I fell over on the path and my knee was bleeding. We are trying to get some help to build a soft path from the classrooms to the play area. Thanks Chloe for your story! As Chloe mentioned, we have put in a proposal to the NSW Mine Safety Advisory Council, under the Regional Health and safety Community Grants project for a grant to improve the safety of the existing path and concrete steps leading from the infants’ classrooms to the main play area. The grant assessment will be based on several criteria including how many community members vote for the project! After the amazing support of the Soldiers Point Public School community in the Run Around Australia competition we know that collectively we can achieve great things! To support the Happy & Safe Little Feet project, please click (you may need to press "ctrl" and click on the link at the same time) on the link below and then when the web page opens click on the green box "I vote for this" http://communitygrants.nswminesafety.com.au/idea/happy-safe-little-feet Voting for the Regional Health and Safety Community Grants closed on Sunday, August 5. The more votes we have, the more chance we have of winning the grant. Thank you all for your support.
