Many bullies grow up into adults who bul-

ly their families, friends, and co-workers,

causing all sorts of problems with rela-

tionships and careers. It's hard to think

about the future when you're feeling a

certain way right now, but take a moment

to see how your behavior may be laying

down some pretty negative groundwork.

We are committed to providing a caring,

friendly and safe environment for all of

Are you a bully and don’t know it? Recog-

nizing bullying in others is easy...in our-

selves, not so much. How do you know if

you are or have ever been a bully? Ask

yourself these questions:

You’ve spread nasty rumors

about a kid at school.

You’ve called kids names and

have publicly humiliated them.

You've repeatedly teased kids,

been mean to them, made fun of

the way they look or speak.

You’ve repeatedly kicked,

shoved, punched or physically

pushed another kid at school –

just because!

You've humiliated another kid,

about them through emailing,

why. Think about how or what you were

COMMUNITY NEWS

“BIGGER THAN BASKETBALL”

When I was growing up, I

don’t remember hearing much

about community service. My

parents were certainly civic-

minded, but they were a lot

more concerned about the work I did around the house.

Some say volunteering takes

up our time, energy, and

sometimes, money. It can be

hard work. It can find us do-

ing and seeing new things,

which can be challenging and

even a little scary. So why

does anyone even go there?

Looking around us we see a

world where our children are

all too often immersed in com-

puters, video games and social

media, removed from real life

experiences. Volunteering

teaches social responsibility. It

immerses our children in real

life, helping others and inter-

acting with people from all

walks of life. Volunteering will

help our children discover

their own strengths and quali-

ties, and how to use them to

help others. Consider it a pre-

ventive ingredient to balance

our children from the materi-

alistic consumer world we live

in. Often times we only fully understand the true value of

our actions after doing them.

As our children mature they

will

come to fully appreciate the value

of volunteering, and to understand

what they have given, and what

they in turn have received.

For NBA players, there is no off-

season when it comes to their

community outreach work.

Through personal foundations or

initiatives with community organi-

zations, they use their unique po-

sition to help people. Players ad-dress issues close to their hearts,

including assisting underprivileged

children, giving back to the com-

munities where they were raised,

and aiding health-related causes.

San Antonio SOLDIERS Youth

Organization knows that there is

more to basketball than what hap-

pens on the court. Our commit-

ment is driven by the desire and

understanding that we have a re-

sponsibility to give back to our

local communities and those that

live in it. All of us who are a part

of the SOLDIERS Organization

will know and understand the dif-

ference we can make in the lives

of others, and our players will

take

great

pride

in

lead-

ing

that

ef-

fort.

SOLDIERS – Getting back to “Bigger than Basketball”

The problems of our commu-

nity, might seem gigantic. Un-

fortunately, they often are.

Honestly, how can one young

person really make a dent in

everything that needs to be

done out there?

Well, think about standing in a

completely dark room with no

lamps or light switches. You

light a candle, and suddenly

there's a little light, and the

darkness doesn't seem quite as

bad. Then, slowly, people join

you, until there are a hundred

people with a hundred candles.

Now the room is bright-and the darkness is gone!

One single person, like one

candle, can make a difference.

If a whole bunch of "ones"

gather together to work on

the same problem, they can

make it better-, or even go

away. Every person is im-

portant, and every person can

do some good.

When the story of what the

San Antonio SOLDIERS

Youth Organization has done

gets written, we want it to say

that we did all we could and it

was more than anyone could

have imagined. Participate in

all community events and give

back to your community.
