SoldierView has been designed to meet a single user interface, but it can be easily tailored to provide different views for different operators (i.e. Commanders vs Assaulters, etc). Users have easy access to functionalities through an intuitive menu system. The main menu provides access to various features and settings of the system, and the quick actions menus allows users to interact with locations and geo-referenced entities on the map.To make it easy for users to find their bearings, the map can be set up to automatically orient itself based on the internal electronic compass in the device. This value is computed by the internal electronic compass or if the user is moving, the system orients the map according to the direction of travel. The compass bearing in Mils or Degrees can be superimposed on the top of the display.

The SoldierView Battle Management System (BMS) allows users to track their own movement and that of their team members to enhance situational awareness, enable better, faster decisions and reduce the risk of fratricide.

Information is provided on a digital map with pre-formatted tactical symbology. The user interface follows all of the Android User Interface Best Practices making it easy to use and highly intuitive, reducing training time and ensuring soldier acceptance.

The digital map is provided by a full geomatic information system (GIS) to allow terrain analysis, intervisibility calculations and distance measurement. Information is presented in layers that can be shown or hidden to de-clutter the map.

SITUATION AWARENESSSOLDIERVIEW ANSWERS THE KEY QUESTIONS:Where am I? Where are my buddies? Where is the enemy? The GPS generates the user’s location and displays their MGRS or Lat/Long coordinates at the top of the screen. In addition, the system will automatically send its own position after it has moved farther than a user selected distance. Based on these regular positional update messages, the situation awareness display shows icons depicting the individual locations of the team, if casualties have been registered, and the last reported location of any opposing forces.Text messaging includes free text and standardized high-use templates such as: Contact Reports and Situation Reports (SITREP), All Arm Call for Fire, and Casualty Evacuation Requests (CASEVACREQ). For navigation planning, users can create and share multiple routes based on waypoints and receive navigation prompts during tactical movement. This ensures soldiers stay on course, and arrive safely and on-time.

GEOMATIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS)The SoldierView map is based on a mobile GIS that uses internal formats for both raster and vector maps. This file format is created by a mission planning tool, which defines the scale and conditions at which they will be displayed. This allows for a smooth flow from one scale to another as the user zooms in or out. Map coordinates and information may be provided in MGRS or in Lat/Long format, which may be easily changed in the user preferences.A unique capability of the GIS is an intervisibility tool that can help the user determine the best locations for covered approaches, observation posts, fire bases, etc. The tool is easy to use and provides a clear graphic display showing what areas can or cannot be seen from a given location. This functionality is easily accessed through the quick actions menu.

NAVIGATIONSoldierView includes a Route Planning function used to create, modify, share and configure routes based on waypoints. • Waypoints may be created individually, or as a

series of points created sequentially. • Waypoints may be added or removed from an

existing route, and modified or new routes may be shared as required.

• Waypoint creation, modification and deletion may be done from a simple screen as depicted below.

The following values are calculated and displayed on the navigation panel: • The speed of travel and bearing • The distance travelled on the route • The bearing to the next and the previous

waypoints • The distance to the next and the previous

waypoint • The ETA to the next waypoint and the

previous waypointSoldierView also has a breadcrumbs feature that displays the real path travelled by the user.

MESSAGINGSoldierView makes it easy for users to generate both pre-formatted and free text messaging. Contact Reports, MEDEVACREQ, and Calls for Fire can be generated from a single “long press” on the map, which provides an easy to complete template for inputting key information from drop-down menus.ALL ARMS CALL FOR FIRE • During a dismounted patrol, friendly forces

identify an enemy threat 2 km away. • The Commander presses down on the SoldierView

map to generate a Contact Report. The report is submitted and authority to engage the enemy target is approved.

• When a point on the map is pressed, the onscreen menu appears and the user selects Call for Fire.

• Details about the target’s location, direction and distance are automatically pre-populated in various fields based on SoldierView’s internal GIS map data. The remaining target information is specified through drop down menus and text fields.

• The Call for Fire request is sent to the Forward Observer. Details are available to all members of the patrol and can be reviewed and modified at any time.

• If necessary, the Commander can Adjust Fire by pressing the corresponding Call for Fire crosshair icon on the SoldierView map. The Adjust Fire tool allows for quick and easy Left / Right /Add / Drop corrections.

PLANNINGThe SoldierView hand drawing tool allows small unit commanders to graphically depict the plan to their subordinates in order to speed communication and ensure common understanding. Drawings can be created using lines of multiple colors and line thickness. Drawings can be created, modified and deleted quickly and easily, to ensure that plan development is accomplished in minimal time. Free hand drawings can be supplemented with enemy, friendly, neutral and unknown symbols, depicting the full gamut of MIL-STD-2525B symbology and NATO tactical graphics as seen here.SoldierView nodes are connected via a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) network architecture, which makes it resilient and adaptive to dynamic combat net radio and provides the fastest shared situation awareness. The network architecture is configured into Communities of Interest (COI), which are used to tailor data distribution, speed data transmission, and minimize redundant information flow in the network. SoldierView is designed to be radioagnostic, relying on industry standard interfaces including USB and Ethernet for connectivity with networks and peripherals.SoldierView is an Android application using the latest operating system. The graphical user interface automatically adapts to the display size on which it is used, from smartphones to tablets.
