Solemnity of Saint Peter & Saint Paul, Apostles

On this day the Church of Rome celebrates its apostolic foundation. The earliest liturgical texts maintain the unity of this solemnity. The presence of separate basilicas dedicated to the cult of Peter and Paul eventually gave rise to two successive days of celebration. The original unity of this solemnity has been restored in the revision of the Roman calendar. The fixing of this date for the celebration of their martyrdom goes back to the Depositio Martyrun (258). Peter and Paul are the two pillars of the Church whom ancient liturgy and iconography never separate. The confession of faith is the particular trait which earns Simon the surname Peter and the mission to guide and to strengthen his brothers and sisters and thus build the Church. It seems strange that God entrusted such a demanding task to this rough, unpolished man, who had no exceptional gifts, who was at times weak. How much wiser it would have seemed to assign this ministry to Paul! Although a latecomer to Christianity, he appears to have been so much better prepared by birth and by his brilliant formation at the hands of well-known teachers. Always alert, animated by an extraordinary energy and by an exclusive pas-sion for the One whom he had at first persecuted in this Church, he becomes the instrument cho-sen to reveal the gospel of salvation to the Gen-tiles. Paul, whom no trial could separate from the love of Christ, will never deny him. Each of them has a place in the development of the faith: Peter, the guide., through his role of direction and confirmation; Paul, the sower, through his energy and gift for adaptation. Their meetings at Jerusalem and at Antioch show their common inspiration as well as their confrontations. It is at Rome, where they both receive the crown of martyrdom, that they are ulti-mately united in that charity which they always sought to promote. The dialogue between institution (Peter) and charism (Paul) is not always peaceful, but it alone moves history forward. For the Church of Peter and Paul to escape sclerosis, it must join movement to di-rection, the overall good of the institution to the par-ticular challenge of charism.

Dear Parishioners, Eucharist ‘must not be linked to celibacy rule.’ BRAZILLIAN BISHOPS will pro-pose that married men be allowed to cele-brate the Eucharist, Bishop Erwin Kräutler of Xingu in Brazil told the Austrian daily Die Presse on a visit to his native Austria, writes Christa Pongratz-Lippitt. “Every Catholic has a right to the Eucha-rist,” Bishop Kräutler said. At his private audience with Pope Francis in April they had discussed the shortage of priests and he had suggested to the Pope that the conditions for the priesthood be changed. “Celibacy need not be obligatory for celebrating the Eucha-rist. One suggestion will be to decouple celi-

bacy from the Eucharist. Making its celebration dependent on a celibate priest is something I will no longer play along with.” The Tablet 24 May 2014 [Bravo, Bishop Kräut-ler!!!! Since the wonderful papacy of the beloved Pope Fran-cis has begun, bishops around the world are becoming bolder in addressing important issues of the Church. They have in-tellectual and pastoral freedom under the Vatican II concept of collegiality which Pope Francis is calling for. Pope Fran-cis is also trying to tear down the Papacy as Absolute Monar-chy as the Church and World experienced under the papacies of Saint John Paul and Benedict XVI. Under the papacies of Saint John Paul and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, the issue of married clergy or women clergy was officially “not to be dis-cussed!” Even in private conversations. For bishops in Bra-zil to call for married men to celebrate Eucharist is bold and refreshing and a great pastoral need. Recall that the great majority of 1.2 billion Roman Catholics worldwide do not have Eucharist every Sunday due to the priest shortage. This becomes a serious issue if the Church says that it values Eucharist as the “source and summit of the faith” and yet the vast majority do not have Eucharist on a regular basis. This becomes a theological issue. Thank you Holy Spirit for breathing new life into the Church with Pope Francis! VPC].
