PORTSMOUTH CITY COUNCIL ~ THE HARD INTERCHANGE. Robert Smith. As work progresses on the new Interchange, bus stops in the last part of the old one were removed. From Monday 9/1/17, Hoverbus shares stop A with First Hampshire & Dorset Limited service 8, and Stagecoach (South) Limited 21 shares stop D with First Hampshire & Dorset Limited service 2. From the same date, services 23 (to Leigh Park) and 700 (to Havant and beyond) continue to use stop H which has been relocated to the bottom end of Queen Street. From Monday 16/1/17, Portsmouth park & ride continues to use stop J which has also been relocated to the bottom end of Queen Street. Stop F, used by National Express coaches travelling away from Portsmouth, was on the south side of The Hard, between the entrance and exit of the old Interchange. This stop was also moved to the bottom end of Queen Street on Monday 9/1/17. Note that stop G is no longer used. The new Interchange is due to be finished at Easter 2017.

Editorial

Welcome to spring. I trust, by now, that you have seen a 17 registered bus, and taken the

trouble to have a ride. Locally, such vehicles seem rare, but London will always help you

if you are desperate. It’s not surprising that our area is missing out after all the recent

activity, although news from Lucketts has made them favourites for this year! During the

last month or so, Swindon Council’s bus fleet has been sold to Go Ahead South, This is the

first movement in this sector since Go Ahead acquired Plymouth nearly eight years ago.

Early changes pleasing passengers are the giving of change and an order has been placed

for 13 new buses, the largest intake for fifteen years, the overall fleet being two years

older than the median. Probably more importantly, will this be the dam burst needed to

generate further acquisitions, with Blackpool, Halton, Ipswich and Rossendale having

older fleets: Cardiff Warrington and Newport being average but… and Nottingham,

Reading and Lothian (Edinburgh) being leaders in the industry and shining examples of

what the sector can produce.

Club News Our February meeting was, of course, the annual general meeting, and photographic

competition, where entries are now well into double figures. Congratulations to all those

who take the trouble to enter. David Etheridge, Robert Smith and Shaun Daniels were on

the rostrum.

March saw a member’s presentation on the theme of small buses. It was interesting to see

the variety shown of this period in buses history with its small vehicles, both locally and

further afield. Thank again to those member’s making the presentation. It is worth

reminding ourselves that no member presentation equals no meeting!

Obituary.

It is with sadness that I have to report

the death of Claud Munt in December

2016.

Claud who was born in 1940 was one

of the Omnibus Society members who

organised a local group in the

Southampton area in December 1969,

this became the Solent Omnibus Club.

Claud was Chairman for the first year

of the club.

At this time Claud was working in the

schedules office of Hants and Dorset

at Bedford Place Southampton and

apart from working on schedules he

was responsible for the company’s

bus stops. Later he moved to the

schedules office in Bournemouth. In

the 1980’s he moved on to Hampshire

County Council where he worked in

the team that organised the surveys

that formed the Map project and later

the surveys of services supported by

the County. Claud retired from the

council in 2006.

Claud was predeceased by his second

wife Sheila but leaves a son, Simon,

from his first marriage. Claud had

spent the last few years in a nursing

home in Netley Abbey near

Southampton after mobility problems

due to poor circulation due to

diabetes.

Lucketts (including their Coliseum and Worthing Coaches outfits) is taking 26 new vehicles

this year comprising six Scania Interlinks, two Mercedes Tourismos, two minicoaches and

two minibuses. Over half, (14) of them will be for National Express.

Portsmouth City Council has a private bus road adjacent to Queen Alexander Hospital

Arguments over this bus route and its signage were pursued after the bus lane was found to

be one of the most productive in the country. New signage seems to have dampened the

complainants.

Starting Monday 20th March, was a new peak time bus operating from Boorley Park new

development to and from Hedge End Station for residents who need the train for work. The

bus service provides a 30 minute frequency from 0615 to 0845 and also from 1545 to 1945

Monday to Friday. Gareth Blair, Managing Director of Xelabus said "We are delighted to have

been awarded this new service and will be pleased to welcome new customers to our

network of services" Each householder will receive a FREE one month travel voucher from

either Bovis Homes, Linden Homes or Bloor Homes. (There is a similar venture in Chichester

where the bus operates until late evening, even on Sundays)

Silk Road Odyssey Uzbekistan 2016

Uzbekistan is a young country in the early stages of democracy and in 2016 it celebrated twenty-five years of independence from the USSR. Just one week before our visit, the only Head of State to rule during those years died leaving no natural successor so elections are planned. Uzbekistan is the world's second largest cotton-producing country, is rich in underground mineral resources and has a population of 26,600,000. The country is embracing tourism and its people are friendly and welcoming with the younger generation willing to test their English, which since 2015 has become compulsory in schools. For the visitor it is a country steeped in history, with successive invaders from Genghis Khan to Timor the Great, but more importantly the relics of its pivotal role as the centre of the Silk Road trading route. Most visitors start in Urgench, in the north west of the country and head south east. Travel by road/rail and air is relatively simple, if at times a little uncomfortable. All major cities have bus networks and there are plenty of intercity and tourist coaches. Until recently the majority of large buses and coaches were imports from Europe with evidence of much older vehicles originating from the USSR. Today the new coaches are mainly Chinese imports from the likes of Higer and Yutong, whilst the small urban buses tend to be a locally built derivative of the typical high floor Japanese truck/coach chassis. Samkochavto was set up as a joint Turkish/Uzbekistan venture in November 1996, producing vehicles in Samarkand, using engines provided by Isuzu. In 2006 Uzavtosanoat purchased the shares of its Turkish partner. Under the new ownership the trading name was changed to SamAuto LLC. To western eyes the vehicles may seem impractical for heavily utilised city services, but away from the major highways the local neighbourhood roads generally lack any form of hard surface. Much of the local transport runs on natural gas, with large gas tanks strapped precariously on the roofs of older vehicles.

954 GAA is a Kässbohrer-Setra S216HDS dating from the 1980s seen in the desert near Urgench. The reason given for using such old vehicles on incoming tourist service was the lack of robustness from the modern Chinese imports in coping with the rough desert roads. The Setra was very sound for it age but unfortunately the

interior was in poor condition, with broken seat backs and vinyl covering the panels held on with staples. The dual carriageway from the major city of Urgench (population 137,300) to the ancient walled town of Khiva is relatively straight and flat but distinguishable for its trolleybus route, the one and only in the country. The line is 31.3 km (19.4 mi) long and operated by Skoda 24Tr Irisbus vehicles bought in 2013. This is the only remaining section with the route having been cut back from the airport in 2008. With a running time of around 1 hour 20 minutes, seven of the fleet of nine trolleybuses are required to maintain the advertised 25 minute frequency. The Khiva terminus was once a loop; the overheads are still in place but the road on what would be the exit is in such dire state that it is closed to all except pedestrians. As a consequence trolleys are required to reverse into the terminus.

Number 13 photographed in Khiva at sunset. Travelling south east you arrive at the ancient city and trading post of Bukhara (population 272,500). Locally built Sam Auto (Samarkand Automobile Factory) minibuses with Isuzu engines are the backbone of city operations. 137 YAA an SAZ HC 40 B38D photographed at the Rue Mekhtar Ambar terminus in Bukhara, (note the gas tanks on the roof).

Also in Bukhara are three vehicles at either end of the age profile. Below is 327 JAA, I am assuming is an earlier version of the Sam Auto product.

Whilst 609 QAA and 824 AAA are current Chinese products from Higer Bus Co., Ltd. and Xiamen Golden Dragon Bus Co., Ltd.

Continuing 268km on to the architectural gem of Samarkand, (population 509,000), the highlight of any Uzbekistan visit. The city has its own bus operation Samarqandavtoyo' Lovchitrans. Services are frequent and always busy.

582 LAA Sam Auto SAZ HC 40 B38D with Isuzu engine is typical of the fleet. Being the major tourist centre of the country, coaches prominently feature in the city.

754 BAA a Mercedes Benz 0302 negotiates the major five way junction at Shohi Zinda Kochasi/Rudakiy Kochasi whilst the traffic lights are out of action on a Sunday morning.

Looking smart for its age is H656 BA a Mercedes Benz 0303 in the Registan coach park.

The final destination on route to the airport and flight home is the capital city of Tashkent with a population of 2,352,900. A city re-built in soviet style after a severe earthquake in 1966. The city has what would be regarded as a normal public transport system, including an effective metro, conventional bus network and extensive shared minibus service. In recent years Uzbekistan has implemented a development programme for passenger transport. New convenient regular routes have been launched, bus terminals and stations have been built, whilst others have been revamped. Nearly 3,000 buses and 12,000 other passenger vehicles have been purchased in the last three years. The plans for the next five years envisage opening nearly 300 new routes. By 2021 it is anticipated there will be 1,600 suburban and long distance routes, plus 400 other services. Between 2017 and 2021 it is proposed to purchase 2,900 vehicles, plus 5,700 minibuses, the majority of which will be leased.

So if you love an alternative take on history, wonderful architecture and wish to cogitate about their economic stability, Uzbekistan with its great PCV scene is the place for you. Barry T.

14 Adrian Willats Round Up

Eurotrack 26.2.2017

Sunday 26 Feb. Outside Southampton Central railway station are vehicles

for rail replacement duties, some lines west of Southampton being closed

today. Seen here are vehicles of Royale, Majestic, Stagecoach and

Hamilton-Gray, with a 'slither' of red from a Sussex Coaches vehicle just

visible in the centre at the back!

Some Xelabus double deckers were also present, along with someone's

former fleet number 575 (X575 YUG), in a green and blue colour scheme

and legally licensed to S.J. Ayling of Shipley, Horsham.

Another vehicle on rail replacement at Southampton on 26.2.2017

was CL15 LTL of Luxury Transport Ltd., of Hayes, Middlesex.

Cosham Indoor Transport Fair 5 March 2017 The now regular and established "ITFs" at Cosham (this one was the

twelfth) can bring pleasure for many reasons. Maybe some welcome

book or model bargains, or perhaps some particularly interesting

photos bought from one of the traders? The joy of a ride on one of the

buses, enjoying the sounds and liveries of days gone by? Or just meeting

and chatting with friends "in the hobby"? However, at a quarter to

seven in the morning, when I got up to drive to Cosham as one of the

setting up 'crew', all that was some way off - and the omens did NOT

look good! Strong winds and rain were threatening to spoil the day, and although the weather did calm down as I drove there, there were still

intermittent showers while most of the traders were unloading their assorted vans and big estate cars.

As opening time approached, the grey skies suddenly parted to reveal some blue sky, with the rest of the day being mostly dry and even sunny at

times! This obviously makes the bus rides more enjoyable, for a lot of the passengers (both enthusiasts and others) are either local or know

something of Portsmouth even if they no longer live there, so the conversation heard onboard often involves memories of years gone by as

landmarks (or where they used to be!) are seen from the bus.

Considering the appalling early weather, plus the distances that some traders come to support these events, the organisers (and 'punters', I'm sure)

are very grateful to them for turning up! We had a very healthy number of admissions this time, again despite the threatened wet day, so clearly

the advertising phrase "Browse in the warm and dry" counted for something. Well done and thank you also to all helpers who set up early, serve

refreshments for most of the day, crew the buses and then put it all away again come half past three-ish!

As for purchases, well - yes, I must plead guilty there! No models, for I have little space for more and now only buy very occasional examples of

particular interest. However, I did take home a pile of magazines, two VHS tapes, one book and a quantity of prints and slides. Please note the

date for the Autumn "ITF" - Sunday 12 November.

Buses 'performing'

on this occasion

were Portsmouth

190 (TBK 190K) of

1971 and Eastbourne

42 (AHC 442) dating

from 1950. Both are

seen here between

trips outside the

community centre,

with 190 arriving

back from a trip and

passing through the

High Street.

October 1971, A 45-seat school bus was built to a new modular design developed by Strachans (Coachbuilders) Ltd, Hamble, Southampton, to facilitate the supply of the bodies in ckd form for overseas markets. The model has proved popular in this country as well, however, and the initials SC carried on the front of the bus refer to "Stachans Coach", in line with the company's policy of using special names for each body style.

About this time 40 yrs ago buses started to appear across the UK sporting a smart all-over silver livery, with a coloured band between

decks – usually in light blue but sometimes purple or other colours. Operators normally selected a bus which was due to go through

their paint shops anyway, but sometimes they bought them new in silver or made use of an existing silver Commercial Motor Show

model. Operators large and small, and from all sectors, contributed to this phenomenon, which was to celebrate the accession to the

throne of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II twenty-five years earlier, in 1952. Such a large-scale celebration might seem a little odd

nowadays, because her reign has endured, and has encompassed other anniversaries – notably her Golden Jubilee in the year 2002 –

when, once again, buses appeared in a special livery – in gold. The leading

participants in the 1977 Silver Jubilee celebrations were the National Bus

Company, whose subsidiaries, between them, had 25 buses painted silver,

and London Transport which had 25 Routemasters painted silver, and

renumbered them SRM1-25. Both the National Bus Company and London

Transport found sponsors to pay for their silver buses. Additionally, local

authority operators (including PTEs), independents and even some non-psv

operators joined the celebrations with silver-painted buses.

Part two to follow next time.

16 Two years later at Winchester Broadway/Bus Station ~ Rodney Barnes

A welcome return to Winchester where we encounter another phenomenally young fleet. By comparison London would produce about a six year average whereas we had four months at Gosport last time and in a much bigger venue, the average is well under eighteen months at Winchester. This means that over half the buses seen in March did not even exist two years ago! Surely these occurrences cannot go on for ever

Stagecoach operate the majority of routes and the main city routes the 1, 3, 5, and Spring, once known as the 6 are now almost exclusively been operated by a 65 registered batch of Enviro 200 MMCs in a gold and purple livery branded Kings City. The batch is numbered 37406-23, a total of eighteen. They replaced an eight year old batch of buses. Was this because I suggested it at the last survey or the time really was up? Answers can be given at the next meeting please!

Routes 1 and Spring run every 15 minutes; the 3 every 10 and interestingly the 5s every 9 minutes in the main part of the day and is now advertised as 9. I cannot recall ever seeing a 9 minute frequency before, anywhere. If you have please let me know. The oddest I recall seeing was a regular 33 minute interval in Dublin.

Four buses work routes 1 and 3, five the 5 and three the Spring. That uses 16 of the eighteen buses, or does it? This is where our interest become rally interesting.

Route 1: had 37415/8/23 and one of the displaced buses, 36024 now in standard Stagecoach livery

Route 3: 37408/11/2 and the oddity of a double decker, now a ten year Enviro 400 19193 recently transferred from Newcastle with others to replace the step entrance buses which are now illegal. A past survey also featured a double decker. Does the duty demand school bus loading requirements at some time one wonders?

Route 5 had the five expected buses of 37407/9/10/7/19

Spring: the probable 37406/16/20.

We have now got 14 of the 18 buses working on the city routes but all the other four were not languishing in the depot as we will see shortly.

There is another city route, the hourly 4 between Teg Down and Highcliffe. A Kings City liveried Optare Solo 47312 with a personalised number place disguising its O6 plate took on this duty, but judging by other vehicles seen on the estate at Highcliffe, other buses would not be banned.

Stagecoach route 7 is a city route which extends beyond the city urban boundaries to Sparsholt and Crawley. One of the former city fleet 36025 took the journey, the route of which is excluded from city literature. The 4 has the same frequency but is included in literature.

The park and ride has also had new buses recently. The new long MMC Enviro 200s has produced nine buses for the network. It runs on an hourly circuit every ten minutes but as proudly advertised runs every seven minutes (in the peaks). The buses now used are 16 registered in a batch 26041-9 and the ones in use were 26041/3/4/6/8/9 with 26045 joining at the end of the hour as the service was beginning to be enhanced. All these buses are in a green livery but there were instances of the buses being used on what could best be described as depot shuttles. There are more buses

in the current batch than the previous one so there is now no evidence of non-branded “extras” as was seen last time.

Now to look at the country routes in departure order.

Stagecoach operated route 46, to North Baddersley was worked by 36027, one of the former Enviro 200s which have recently been displaced from city routes. Double decks in the area are either late Alexander bodied buses displaced from the 700 Coastliner service many years ago or early Enviro 400s which have been acquired from Newcastle to replace the Volvo Olympians which were largely used in school journeys. Some Manchester originating ones have been in Winchester for a few years The country route to Romsey now seems to be the preserve of O6 registered Enviro 300s which had been used on Winchester park and ride at the end of the last decade 27511/2/4 were all seen on the route with 27515 appearing later in the day. Ironically these buses were vying for the oldest of thee day alongside some Tridents and the Kings City Solo. The service runs every 30 minutes and has to be saloon operated because of a low bridge in Romsey.

Irregular route 67 to Petersfield was operated by Enviro 400 19081 with a 56 registration. The bus entered service in Manchester..

The 64 to Alton or Alresford is also half hourly. The three buses seen on the 64 journeys were all double deckers; 06 registered ex Coastliner models 18512 and 18526 an early Enviro 400 19069, also a 56 registered model from Manchester

It was a considerable surprise to see the 69 departure for Fareham comprise a Kings City liveried Enviro200, 37414. The 86 to Hatch Warren was operated by 18521, yet another of the ex Coastliner Alexander bodied Tridents and finally from Stagecoach the Hampshire tendered service to Eastleigh. 37422, another Kings City Envrio 200. As the hourly service frequency was being extended as rush hour approached, only one of the buses for the route was to be seen. Interestingly the route was with Go Ahead at the time of the last survey, but had seen Wheeler and First operating it before Stagecoach took over in the autumn 2016!

That brings us to the end of Stagecoach operations. We turn now to Go Ahead South Coast who operate a 15 minute service 1 to Southampton, up from 20 minutes last time. Despite the recent buses being very modern in 2014 (63/64 registered) flashy 66 registered Enviro400 MMCs were bought for the route recently, Headways were being widened during the rush hour and the 1600 left a fair while after (in line with the timetable). Therefore instead of five journeys which would have been seen in a day time hour, only four were to be found in the survey hour. (1639/40/43/47)

Two coaches arrived at the Broadway during the hour, Route 032 of National Express was run by Go Ahead South with 7814, a 16 registered Caetano bodied Volvo. The coach was working route 032 between Southampton and London Victoria, The other coach was Luckett’s 482048 which is a little older and running from Portsmouth and Southampton to Heathrow Airport It had a 62 registration

As I concluded last time “although there were the expected buses for most routes there were enough surprises to enthral and illustrate that Winchester can provide considerable interest.” Despite what we would be led to expect, very few London routes provide standard buses on all routes. Let 2017 be the year when you can note the unexpected and appreciate the variety operators regularly provide us.

These costs per passenger were calculated for the period 1/4/16 to 31/12/16, during which services 19/19A carried 18,153 passengers. The cost per passenger is significantly more for 19/19A because they are so lightly used. Bus Handover Arrangements.

New bus handover arrangements at Hilsea were introduced on Sunday 8/1/17 due to the increased number of driver changing places remote from the depot.

Although not usually an interworking arrangement, buses (regardless of type) parked in Hilsea bus lanes are often used as staff ferry vehicles. Thus a bus is taken from Hilsea bus lanes by the relieving driver to the remote changeover point to meet the service bus. The drivers swap vehicles so that the service vehicle stays on its route with the replacement driver and the ferry vehicles returns to Hilsea bus lanes with the driver who is now off duty. Accordingly, buses will be seen parked at various locations, especially The Hard (for service 15), Portsmouth City Centre (for services 13/14), North End Junction (for service 19), Cosham (for service 22 on Mondays to Saturdays), Queen Alexandra Hospital (for Queen Alexandra Hospital Staff Park & Ride), and Emsworth (for service 27). There are a few exceptions, however. The ferry bus will replace the service bus for services 15, 19 and (on Sundays only) 22. However, sometimes the ferry bus will replace the service bus in exceptional circumstances, eg breakdown, accident damage or late running.
