SoundFan sound levels are measured in sones. At this time there are no sone level test standards available through HVI due to the fact that remote mounted fan noise levels are in proportion to the following: type of duct, length of duct, fan dis-tance from the intake source and other miscellaneous factors. However, it is generally accepted that remote mounted venting is usually quieter than standard (in room) venting.

SOLVED!Bathroom Exhaust Concerns...

We spend hours upon hours in our bathrooms; why not make them as comfortable as possible? No more loud noisy fans that instantly alert you the moment you hit the switch. If the strongest, quietest, bathroom exhaust system is what you seek, look no further. S&P offers a range of inline fans or ceiling mounted fans that offer several advantages over traditional bathroom fans to fit exactly what you need. Our TD-MIXVENT and PV-POWERVENT lines of fans are available in convenient, all inclusive kits to provide the ultimate bathroom ventilation system. Whether you choose from the popular, and exclusive, TD series bathroom exhaust kits (for single or dual venting points), or the ultra powerful PV series kits (also, in single or dual vents) for long or complicated duct runs, all S&P bath kits feature a powerful fan mounted in the attic (away from the living space). The result is a “Turbo” powered fan (much stronger than generally associated with bathroom exhaust) and yet a peacefully quiet operation. If your concern is noise, the TD-SILENT is the fan for you, with a built in sound attenuator and remote mounting the TD-SILENT is the fan you will never hear. You also have the choice of the SWF sidewall series fan, featuring the powerful PV motor, when attic space or easy indoor access is difficult or not suitable for traditional in-line mounting. Finally, if a ceiling mounted fan is what you need, our V-Series bathroom fans, are the most energy efficient line of ceiling mounted ventilation fans available in North America.

Our remote mounted fans are powerful enough to vent multiple areas with one unit (dual vent - dv kits) for today’s larger bathrooms; venting multiple bathrooms with one unit is also possible. The remote mounting feature allows peace and quiet in the living space, thus reducing the sound level of a generally noisy fan. S&P remote fans also offer extended duty times, are low maintenance and help reduce moisture, which decreases the likelihood of mold or mildew. Plus, they do not detract from the homes aesthetics unlike some unsightly roof mounted units. S&P remote fans are the clear choice for the strongest, quietest installation.

In addition to our fans and kits, S&P offers a complete line of grilles and switches. When used in combination S&P offers the perfect solution with the most options!

Fans for

Life!

For the most effective bathroom ventilation, HVI recommends eight air changes per hour. Fans should be installed as close to the shower as possible and, if marked as suitable for this location, directly over it to capture the moisture as directly as possible. Your fan should have a control that will allow the fan to run at least 20 to 30 minutes after each shower.

An enclosed toilet should have its own exhaust fan. Fans should be located over the shower or tub. Bathroom doors need to have at least 3/4” clearance to the finished floor to allow entry of makeup air. Using a timer or other control ensures that ventilation continues for a minimum of 20 minutes after use of the bathroom. For steam showers, we recommend a separate fan in the steam room that you can turn on after use. Bathroom (continuous ventilation) should be available on a continuous basis at a minimum of 20 CFM in lieu of an intermittent 50 CFM fan.

Need to meet ASHRAE 62.2 or looking to continuously ventilate your bathroom? You can use our CVC - Continuous Ventilation

Control with any switch you choose! (only available for use with TD fans)

Fan Sizing for Bathrooms Over 100 SQ. FT. The following recommendations follow the Home Ventilating Institute (HVI) guidelines:

Ventilation for baths over 100 square feet is calculated based on the fixtures in the bathroom. Allow 50 CFM for each standard toilet, shower, steam shower or tub. Whirlpool, garden and hot tubs are calculated at 100 CFM each. Add the CFM for all fixtures and you’ll have the total CFM required for the bathroom.

Step 1: Calculate Bathroom Size: 20’ x 10’ Bathroom =200 square feet Step 2: 1 Toilet +1 Shower +1 Tub =150 CFM Result: You will need a 150 CFM fan for this bathroom.

SOLVED!Range Hood Exhaust Concerns...

Today the kitchen is the heart of our homes, it’s where we relax, gather and enjoy family and friends. S&P offers a range of inline fans to fit your range hood needs by offering many advantages over traditional (in hood) fans. By virtue of the remote mounting, the noise is kept further from the living space, reducing the sound level of the fan. Remote mounting also allows for a duct silencer (SIL) to be mounted between the fan and the range hood, reducing the fan noise level by another 50% or more. S&P remote fans also offer extended duty times, low maintenance, and do not detract from the homes aesthetics, unlike some unsightly roof mounted units. S&P remote fans are the clear choice for the strongest, quietest installation.

How to Size Your Kitchen Ventilation SystemDue to varying capacities for moving air, prior to selecting your range hood fan, be sure to consult with local residential codes and the range manufacturer’s recommendations. If you are unable to determine any manufacturer’s recommendation, S&P has provided the following illustration to assist you with accurately calculating your fan size.

The following recommendations follow the Home Ventilating Institute (HVI) guidelines:

HVI’s recommended kitchen range hood ventilation rates vary and depend on the type of cooking performed. The minimum rates are 40 CFM per lineal foot for a kitchen range hood placed along a wall and 50 CFM per lineal foot for island hoods. However, HVI recommends 100 CFM per lineal foot for wall-mounted kitchen range hoods and 150 CFM per lineal foot for island kitchen range hoods. Kitchen range hoods equipped with multiple speed settings allow low-level, quiet ventilation for light cooking with the ability for effective ventilation when needed. For “professional” style cook-tops, HVI recommends following the cook top manufacturer’s advice to estimate the approximate CFM requirements.

Wall Mount Installations:100 CFM per foot of width.

Example: 48” (4 ft.) wide hood will require 400 CFM.

Feet of Width 4 CFM per Foot x 100Air Flow [CFM] 400

Island Mount Installations:150 CFM per foot of width.Example: 48” (4 ft.) wide hood will require 600 CFM.

If you have a dryer with long or complicated duct runs, S&P offers the perfect solution to increase dryer efficiency: the PV100x Dryer Booster Fan. The PV100x has been specifically designed to handle dryer boosting applications when overcoming long or complicated duct runs. This system helps save on drying time, moisture build-up, wear and tear on your dryer, and helps save on your electric bill. The centrifugal blade design is able to overcome extreme resistance from the most challenging installations. The PV-100x offers a fully enclosed motor with Class F insulation which ensures a long, trouble free life; thus making it the right choice for enhancing the performance of your clothes dryer.

The PV-100x fan is available separately or as part of a kit that includes everything necessary for a hands-free operation. Once the system is installed you will no longer waste time, energy or unnecessary wear and tear on your dryer. The next step is to select which activation best fits your needs.

How to activate the PV-100x fan for clothes dryer boosting

Pressure SwitchesPressure switches are a viable method of fan activation and a good solution for many installations. The pressure switch senses the pressure differential in the duct created by the dryer operation, thus activating the fan. Conversely, when the dryer is deactivated, the pressure switch senses this differential and the fan is deactivated. S&P’s PV-100xps utilizes a compact pressure sensor and run timer enclosed within the junction box and mounted to the fan housing. The pressure sensor is also available as an accessory.

Current SensorsCurrent sensors are S&P’s “preferred” method of activation. They are “fail-safe”, as there is no maintenance required on the current sensor and they’re easy to install. The current sensing device can be installed at the outlet (where the dryer plugs into the wall) or at the circuit breaker box. When the device senses current going to the dryer, it activates the fan and vice-versa. No thought! No maintenance! Our choice!

InterlocksInterlocks, like Current Sensors, are another “fail-safe” method of clothes dryer booster activation. The interlock senses when the fan is running and activates the dryer. Used as a safety feature, if the fan is not running or if there is a problem with the fan the dryer will not turn on.

All 3 activation methods are available as accessories or in the S&P’s all inclusive dryer booster kits.

NOTEThe PV-100x Dryer Booster fan is suitable for use with duct runs of up to 105 linear feet of 4” rigid duct or a maximum of 6 elbows and 80 feet.

SOLVED!Clothes Dryer Boosting Concerns...

The sidewall unit can be paired with a current sensor or pressure switch when interior duct access in a home, apartment or townhouse is limited or difficult. The expanded exhaust grille allows for the easy passing of lint laden air. The SWF utilizes the same powerful motor as the PV-100x and is also suitable for duct runs up to 105 feet or up to 80 feet with 6 elbows. The low profile SWF fan is easy to install with an epoxy coating that can be painted to match the exterior of the building. The SWF also offers the same trusted 5 year warranty.

Featuring S&P’s SWF-SIDEWALL SeriesGasoline, automotive exhaust fumes, paint, fertilizer, pesticides and other potentially harmful products are present in most garages and the effect on the quality of air inside the home is undoubtedly compromised if not properly addressed. Keep the hazardous fumes in your attached garage from entering your home and harming you and your family with the SWF Series fans. S&P’s Garage Ventilation solutions help keep the contaminants in your garage from harming you and your family!

The SWF Series’ outdoor rated exterior housing provides easy access from the outside of a building or dwelling. This makes the SWF a great solution for installations where attic space or easy indoor access is difficult and not suitable for traditional PV style in-line mounting. The Sidewall Fan Series (SWF) of direct drive

centrifugal ventilation fans consists of five model sizes: 4” through 8”. All models are designed for direct connection in-line with standard diameter round ducting. Airflow performance values range from 119-416 CFM.

Indoor Air Quality Concerns...For Your FamilyToday’s homes are built to be tighter and more energy efficient than ever before. Builders and homeowners use vapor barriers, caulking, and better sealed doors and windows to reduce energy loss caused by air infiltration. Tighter homes also mean that pollutants are trapped indoors. Poor indoor air quality, caused by trapped pollutants, is not

only uncomfortable to the occupants, but it is a health hazard. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) like formaldehyde, as well as cigarette smoke, radon, household cleaners, and perfumes can threaten your family’s well being.

For Your HomeEveryday activities such as showering, cooking, doing laundry, even breathing are just a few ways that moisture is generated in your home (one gallon per person, everyday). Moisture that is trapped in your home can lead to structural damage. Signs of structural damage include heavy condensation on windows, water damage on window sills and molds forming in cold corners of the home.

Whether you have a new home under construction or an existing home needing a ventilation upgrade, S&P provides powerful, quiet blowers in its TR (total recovery) Series for all climates. You can enjoy ample air exchange without the objectionable noise associated with lower quality products. If you want the best “whole house” approach to efficient and effective ventilation, S&P’s TR Series makes your choice simple.

“Whole House” Ventilation Made Easy!

43

Protect Your Family & Your HomeTo protect the two most valuable investments of your life, your home and your family, improving indoor air quality is key. With S&P’s TR (total recovery) Series for all climates, stale room air is exhausted and fresh outdoor air is brought back into the house. These two air streams are directed through a highly developed “air-to-air” energy exchange core. The air streams are physically separated by many layers of “plates” so there is no mixing or contamination of the fresh air. The plates are made of an engineered “resin” material that simultaneously transfers heat by conduction and humidity by attracting and moving water vapor from one air stream to the other.

S&P’s TRs moderate extremes in both temperature and humidity, creating a comfortable indoor environment. The unique moisture transfer capability of the S&P core also eliminates condensation and frost build up in most applications. Unlike other ERVs on the market no mechanical or electrical defrost systems are needed, which means higher heat recovery efficiencies, easier installation and more reliable operation.

SOLVED!Indoor Air Quality Concerns...

The CORE• Efficient transfer of heat and moisture• No liquid is accumulated; no drain pan or defrost mechanism is required!• Industry best 10-year warranty

• Contaminated air is exhausted from your home, while the static plate core regulates extremes in humidity

Series TR - The Ultimate ERV for ALL Climates

The Difference Between ERVs and HRVs

ERVs• Transfer BOTH heat AND humidity• Use enthalpic core• S&P’s TR is an ERV

Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERV) and Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRV) both moderate extremes in ventilation air temperature so what is the difference?

HRVs• Transfer ONLY heat• Use aluminum core or simple plastic cores

Can ERVs be used in climates subject to cold winters?

Yes! Because ERVs transfer both heat and humidity they are the perfect choice for any climate. In the winter ERVs:

• Warm outdoor air close to room temperature • Use heat that would otherwise be lost with the exhaust air. • Transfer water vapors to moderate extremes in humidity levels • Help prevent moisture damage or over-drying of the home.

Why are ERVs better than HRVs?

HRVs and ERVs are similar in that they both:• Improve Indoor Air Quality• Moderate extremes in ventilation temperature• Use heat that would otherwise be lost with the exhaust air in the winter• Provide necessary fresh air while pre-cooling in the summer

Why is S&P’s Series TR the Ultimate ERV?

ONLY ERVs have the ability to transfer water vapors or moisture so they:• Help prevent over-drying of the home in colder seasons• Lessen the demand on the air-conditioning system in warmer seasons• Are typically 3x more energy efficient in the summer than products (or units) that transfer only heat (HRVs)

Q:A:

Q:A:

Q:A:

Q:A:S&P’s TRs provide the same benefits as other ERVs on the market. Major Series

TR advantages include:• More heat transfer than most HRVs• More humidity control than other plate exchangers• Simplicity and positive airstream separation not offered by wheel type ERVs• 10-year core warranty

Choosing the Right Size TR

Improves Indoor Air QualityBy providing simultaneous exhaust and fresh air supply, S&P reduces the concentration of harm-ful pollutants in indoor air - an absolute must in schools, offices and smoking environments.

Meets Ventilation Codes for Air ExchangeProvides ample ventilation to meet ASHRAE 62 and the International Mechanical Code that now requires two to three more air exchanges than in the past.

Controls Excess MoistureUnlike conventional ventilation or basic heat ex-changers, S&P moderates not only the tempera-ture but the humidity content of incoming air, limiting humidity swings and associated biologic growths.

Optimum Cold Weather PerformanceRecaptures heat otherwise lost to exhaust air while controlling humidity extremes. This greatly reduces the demand on heating equipment - low-ering both initial costs and energy bills. Also pro-tects heating coils from freeze damage.

Optimum Warm Weather PerformancePre-cools and dehumidifies the fresh airstream by transfer of heat and humidity to the exhaust air-stream. This greatly reduces air conditioning de-mand - lowering both initial costs and energy bills. On retrofits, the ventilation rate of existing A/C equipment can be as much as doubled.

Energy Saved = Dollars SavedS&P’s all-weather performance can cut annual en-ergy bills for heating, cooling and dehumidification of ventilation air by 50% or more.

Sensible HeatThe amount of energy involved in raising or lowering the temperature of air not including any energy required to cause water vapor to change state.

Latent HeatThe amount of energy associated with the humidity (or water vapor content ) of an air stream. A drier air stream contains less latent heat and will impose a smaller latent load on the air conditioner.

EnthalpyThe total amount of energy contained in air, the sum of sensible and latent heat.

Balanced VentilationA ventilation strategy using both an exhaust air blower and a supply or make-up air blower that does not pressurize or de-pressurize a build-ing.

Air-to-Air Heat ExchangerGeneric term for technologies designed to transfer heat -- and sometimes moisture -- be-tween two air streams.

Heat Recovery Ventilator – HRVAn air-to-air heat exchanger that transfers sen-sible heat only; no humidity (latent heat) trans-fer occurs between the two air streams.

Energy Recovery Ventilator – ERVIn Cold Weather, some of the humidity in the inside air is recovered – along with its latent energy. Non-enthalpic heat recovery systems lose that latent energy.
