Record of evidence against key performance indicators
For efficiency and consistency during moderation sessions, a decision was made by the Solihull Schools’ Strategic Accountability Board in 2014 that schools would bring assessments against key performance indicators (KPI) as determined by the NAHT.
Over the years, moderation sessions have evolved so that schools can bring different types of evidence depending upon their own assessment systems in school.
For those schools which chose to moderate KPI, these forms have been designed to help teachers capture evidence against KPI constructs in mathematics.
How to use
Sample number – reference the piece of photocopied work or piece of work in a book. These are usually numbered or highlighted with ‘bookmark’ post-its.
Anecdotal evidence/ observations – not all evidence will be in a pupil’s work. This column provides teachers with the opportunity to capture observations or anecdotal evidence. Teachers must be mindful to not reiterate the construct e.g. Sam can count in multiples of two. This is a statement and not evidence. The teacher would need to report what they saw or heard Sam say to come to the conclusion that he could count in multiples of 2. For example, “when counting the pile of cubes on the table, Sam lined them up in pairs and independently counted in multiples of two to work out the total.”
Teacher/ moderator – In these columns, the teacher initially makes a judgement as to how well the pupil has achieved the construct. The moderators then have the opportunity to say whether they agree or have a different opinion based on the evidence shared.
IE – there is not enough evidence available to assess whether the pupil has achieved this construct.
WTS – the pupil has been taught this construct and shows signs of some understanding. However, they need support and prompting to achieve this construct particularly between lessons.
EXS – the pupil, on the whole, can independently achieve this construct and needs little prompting in subsequent lessons.
GDS – the pupil confidently and independently achieves this construct. They independently choose to use this piece of mathematics in situations outside of the taught lesson. They can use this piece of mathematics flexibly and can explain their strategies.
Some constructs are made up of several objectives. In these situations, teachers may need to assess ‘IE’ if all objectives have not been met or they may choose to assess each separate piece of mathematics.
