My final comments are about the once popular Porsche driver’s reaction to seeing another fellow Porsche owner on the road and blinking their lights to say “hello friend”. Whether it is the new Porsche owners aren’t familiar with this recognition practice, or haven’t properly been trained, it would be nice to see a return to days gone by when Porsche drivers got excited about seeing another driver on the road and flicked their lights to say “howdy neighbor”. Maybe the new Porsche driver’s don’t recognize other models, or even worse, just don’t care. I flicked my lights to 2 Panamera’s, a Boxster and a 911 on the way home a couple weeks ago and got either no reaction or a ??? look from the other driver. Cars & Coffee, Plus Tour of Williamson County

Saturday, March 24 was the first C & C of the season, and there were several cars in attendance, including about a dozen Porsche’s. The weather was “iffy” plus with a new

location, attendance was down a bit but the location is great and plenty of room and Mickey D’s right next door. Shirley and I hung around talking to friends and then led a

caravan of Porsche’s, a BMW M3, and a Maserati on a nice tour of Williamson County. We drove through Leiper’s Fork, Boston, Fly, and Sante Fe ending up at the Henpeck Village

Market for lunch. Nice place with sandwiches, pizza and BBQ ribs and chicken. They have music on Friday and Saturday nights. Joining Shirley and me were Grant Montgomery,

Andy Perez, Bryan Edwards and Doran Edwards, plus a couple of co-pilots. All in all, it was a pretty good day.

It was more than twenty years ago that I arrived in the US from Japan. I found a condo in Brentwood, Tennessee,

where I lived with my family for almost five years. The purpose of my visit was to startup two tire plants; one in

LaVergne and the other in Warren County. I bought a brand new Ford Taurus Station Wagon and traveled many

places from the Northeast to Southeast United States like Chevy Chase’s movie “National Lampoon’s Christmas”.

After the production in the two tire plants was stabilized, I returned to Japan and was asked to lead the project

that would put a barcode on each tire. The barcode project would contain every detail of the specification to build

a specific tire and allow our company to track the performance. The high performance tire like Potenza RE050A

for Porsche is also produced under strict quality control. After the project was completed, I was assigned to

develop various kinds of tire-related equipment. The photograph with giant tires was taken when I visited a coal

mine in Australia for testing our newly developed Tire Pressure Monitoring System. Carrying another new TPMS

for truck and bus tiers, I visited the Mercedes Bents Stuttgart plant in Germany several times. Unfortunately, I had

no chance to visit the Porsche plant next to Mercedes Bents because I had not yet developed TPMS for sports

cars. I have been working for Bridgestone for 33 years.

I was re-assigned to work in Nashville in 2008. Since my family remained in Japan, I decided to buy a two-seat

sports car. I asked my friend, the owner of a Honda S2000, to show me sports cars like Mercedes, BMW, and

some other manufacturers. A lot of cars caught my eye, but he advised me not to decide too quickly and think it

over for a couple of days. Finally, we visited JPA and I found a Silver Porsche Cayman-S. I asked for a test drive,

but was turned down. I was told, “The person who is looking for a Porsche already knows what it is”. After a long

negotiation they reluctantly agreed to let me drive only a few miles. I found the car rugged and noisy compared

to the Mercedes. When I expressed my first impression to the salesman, he replied; “Noisy? Most people want to

listen to this Porsche Sound!” After the test drive, when I returned to the office, I was surprised that my friend

was ready to sign the purchase agreement as a co-owner, because I had no house, no bank account, and no

driver’s license. I told my friend, “You are different from what you advised. You told me not to buy today!” He

said, “It is a very nice car. You have no choice, you must buy it.” I decided to buy the car because I honestly and

truly liked it.

After purchasing my Porsche, the JPA kindly arranged for me to join the PCA of Nashville, Musik-Stadt Region. I

am very pleased that I joined and am enjoying the meetings, driving and food events. I have made many friends

in PCA. Even though I am not able to speak English as fluently as most, every member is very friendly and helpful

when I have questions. Last year I attended the Porsche Parade in Savanna, Georgia, with my son. At first he did

not show any interest in car. But after that, he became a fan of the Porsche sport car. I entered an auto cross

competition held at the Nashville Super Speed Way parking lot. I had five trials. At the third trial I was at the start

line when the Starter approached me and said: “I know your car. You should not use manual shift. Just cut off

PSM and drive in automatic shift”. During the next trial, my lap time had dramatically improved and the car ran

very fast. It was unbelievable. Porsche technology controls my car much better and more precise than me! I

have been driving my Cayman-S for four years and still find something new in Porsche every day. It’s FUN!!!.

TEST DRIVE 911 : Now Showing on Speed

Mark your calendars and make your hotel reservations. Dan Martin has

planned a trip to Deal’s Gap NC by way of the Cherohala Skyway for a week-end visit to Tail of the Dragon, and maybe a

Saturday trip to Biltmore or Biltmore Village in Ashville. Mike Moody made this trip with PCA Huntsville 6 years ago and

said it was a blast. This has to be on someone’s “bucket list” so make your reservations now with more details to follow.

Call Fontana Village at 800-849-2258 and use code MUSIK STADT for special room rate of $115/night (Friday + Sat night).

Dan is working on special dinners for both nights. More details to follow, but make your hotel reservations before May 22.

Email Dan at [email protected] to confirm you are going.
