The mechanis m of control li ng #nal microstruct ur e of cas ting pr odu cts is sti ll o"$ ect of ma$ or uncert aint y in the scienti#c literatures and has "een, and still is, an su"$ect of intensive research.  The most common %uestion for all producers of gray iron cast ings is ho ! they can "e sure a"out the %uality of  nucleation for o"taining an good product &'(. Ther mal analysis is an important tool to try to ans!er this %uestion &)(. n this research, + .- !t. / La,Ba0 CalF eSi system allo ys !as us ed to investi ga te the inoculation e1ect of electr ically melted near0eutectic gray cast ir on +2. 3304. '2 CE/ hav ing .'5 !t. S. The cooling curve of each sample !as recorded +# g. '/ and computer0aided anal y6 ed "y us ing a special soft!are to7 a/ esta"lish the particular characteris tics of the registered cooling curves, "/ emphasi6e the solidi#cation parameters that sho!s more sensi"ility as against La additio n in treat ed cast ir on and, eventu all y, c/ to impr ove therma l ana lys is techni%ue used for control of La0inoculated gray cast irons. For the assessment of the correctness of the results esta"lished "y thermal analysis !ere performed another sets of analysis "y other control methods that included chilling tendency, the evaluati on of graphite structures using opti cal microscopy and Brinell hardness tests.
