CollabCAD Tutorial : Solids

Examples on Solid Modeling and Boolean Operations This tutorial explains step by step procedure for the modeling of a Cubical box using the features Solid Modeling of CollabCAD. This tutorial also demonstrates the various boolean operations like union, difference, intersection etc.

Figure 1 : Front View of Solid Cubical Boxes

Step 1 :- Login to the CollabCAD with the user name.

Step 2 :- Enter the the part name & units of measurement in mm & Press Okay.

Step 3 :- Press F the Origin symbol will automatically fit into centre of Screen, the Colors Red, Green Blue represents X,Y,Z axes respectively. By default, the CollabCAD main window will be in Front View.

Step 4 :- Now we will create two Solid cubical boxes, Please go to option Soild ->Box-> Key –in, Then

press left mouse button for selection, Collabcad Pops up a SolidBox Creation Window, and queries for the Coordinates of the Left bottom Corner of the Box and the lengths in X, Y, Z directions.

Please Enter the following values,

Origin X - 200.0

Origin Y - 200.0

Origin Z - 0.0

Page 2: Solids

CollabCAD Tutorial : Solids

Length @ X - 500.0

Length @ Y - 500.0

Length @ Z - 500.0 and Press OK

With this a Solid Cubical Box ( B1) is created.

In a similar way, Now let us create One more Soild Cubical Box with the following values

Origin X - 450.0

Origin Y - 450.0

Origin Z - 0.0

Length @ X - 500.0

Length @ Y - 500.0

Length @ Z - 500.0 and Press OK

Now a another Solid Cubical Box (B2) is created. Figure 1 shows the front

View of the Solid boxes created.

Step 5 :- Press F Key to fit to the Screen automatically

Step 6 :- Now let us see the Boolean Operations i.e Union, Difference, Intersection etc. on these two boxes

Step 7 :- Union of two Solid Boxes

Please go to option Solids->Union

Specify a Base Solid for Union, Select the Bottom Solid Box (B1)

Indicate Transform or Group Solid, Select the Top Solid Box (B2)

Then Press Enter,

Creation of a Solid Object message will be displayed. Now a Solid Object which is union of both the solid boxes will be dispalyed on the screen, as shown in the Figure 2.

Please go to View - > Multiple to display all four views namely Front, Right, Top & ISO View in clockwise order from left top as shown in figure 3.

Step 8 :- Difference of two Solid Boxes

Now Please go to Edit -> Undo Press the Left mouse button,

This will Undo the Union Operation, we have performed on two solid boxes.

Please go to option Solids->Difference and Press left mouse button

Collabcad responds with,

Specify a Base Solid for Intersection, Select the Bottom Solid Box (B1)

Indicate Solid, Select the Top Solid Box ( B2)

Then Press Enter, Creating a Solid Object messgae will displayed on bottom border of the Collabcad window. Now a Solid Object which is difference of the bottom Solid Box & the top solid box will be created and displayed on the screen

as shown in Figure 4.

Please go to View - > Multiple to display al l four views namely Front, Right, Top & ISO View in clockwise order from top left as shown in figure 5

Step 9 :- Intersection of two Solid Boxes

Now Please go to Edit -> Undo Press the Left mouse button,

This will Undo the Difference Operation, we have performed on two solid boxes.

Please go to option Solids -> Intersect and Press left mouse button

Collabcad responds with,

Specify a Base Solid for Intersection, Select the Bottom Solid Box ( B1)

Indicate Solid, Select the Top Solid Box ( B2 )

Then Press Enter, Creating a Solid Object messgae will displayed on bottom

Now a Solid Object which is obtained after the Intersection of bottom Solid Box & top solid box will be created and displayed on the screen as shown in Figure 6.

Please go to View - > Multiple to display al l four views of the Solid object after Intersection, namely Front, Right, Top & ISO View in clockwise order from top left as shown in Figure 7.

Figure 7 :- Multiple View of Intersection of Two Solid Boxes.

Step 10 :- Trimming Feature of Solids.

Please go to View -> Front

Page 7: Solids

CollabCAD Tutorial : Solids

Now Please go to Edit -> Undo , Press the Left mouse button,

This will Undo the Intersect Operation, we have performed on two solid boxes. The solid boxes B1 & B2 will be displayed

The Trimming Feature of Solids can be done as given below.

Now Let us create a points to create a B-Spline

Create Points P1 ( 50.0, 350.0, 0.0 )

P2 (280.0, 450.0, 0.0 )

P3 (380.0, 800.0, 0.0)

Please go to Curves->B-Spline->Approximation

and create a B-Spline Curve ( bsc1) , connecting these points P1, P2 & P3 as shown in Figure 8.

Figure 8 :- Front View of Two Solid Boxes with B-Spline Curve

Now let us create create a Line Vector. Please go to Basic -> Line -> End Coordinates

Enter the following values

X 1 - 0.0

Page 8: Solids

CollabCAD Tutorial : Solids

Y1 - 0.0

Z 1 - 0.0

X 2 - 0.0

Y2 - 0.0

Z 2 - 100.0 Press OK,

With this a Line Vector is created which will be used, for the creation of Linear Extrusion of Surface

Now let us create the Linear Extrusion of Surface.

Press F9, the Collabcad comes to dynamics mode, Slightly rotate geometry towards left using the left

mouse button, so that the Line vector created is displayed clearly on the screen. F9 key toggles between ON/OFF.

Please go to Surfaces -> Linear Extrusion

Collabcad responds with

Specify Curve, Select the B-Spline ,

Specify a Line for direction, Select the Line Vector created

Then Collabcad responds with Extrusion Offsets Window, Enter the following values and press OK

Start Offset 0.0

End Offset 500.0

Then Extrusion Surface is created as shown in Figure 9.

Now, Please go to Solids -> Trimming

Collabcad responds with,

Specify Solid to trim, Select the bottom Solid box ( B1 ) ( Refer Figure 9)

Indicate a Surface, Select the Surface S1

Indicate side to remove, Select the left side of the Surface

Then Press Enter, Creating a Solid Object message will displayed on bottom border of the Collabcad window. Now a Solid Object which is trimmed on the left side of the surface indicated will be created and displayed as shown in Figure 10.
